G36 assembly, might have all the bits…finally…
Installing cranks and Aero bars with with 2 brake levers.
Trusty KH36
KH29 converted to 20" Freewheel. No seat 'cause I’m using the seat post for the G36 assembly stand.

Why do <ou have 2 brake levers on your uni? Is one not enough?
I want to have access to brakes while staying in “aero” position. I usually ride in this position, mainly to keep weight off my butt… With Sit-bones in contact with the back part of seat.
See below KH36 and G36 side by side
I still need to connect the hydraulic hose for the Shimano XT brake set and the GRX secondary in-line sub brake lever
Looks great and thats a fantastic rim you have there, I have them on a nukeproof MTB (same colour as your frame oddily!)
What hub are you using ? i assume your using a 32 hole hub as the rim comes either 28 or 32 hole.
Time for an updated picture of my favorite uni sizes 36" and 29".
I keep tweaking my setups and this is the latest iteration. Latest change yesterday is the new simple handlebar on the 36" (replacing the previous M4O handle saddle hack). Really like the look of the handlebar on the 36" as the mount also replaces the seat post clamp for a very clean look.
36" is with 127mm KH Spirit cranks and 29" is with 114mm Nimbus Venture cranks. Seems to be a good fit for my current skill level. I’ve tried shorter on both uni sizes without any change to my average speeds.
A few closeups of the handlebars from different angles are available here.
So, I just bought this 20" Nimbus on the left locally from a man whose son had given up. Got a great price on it. I plan to use it to work on my technical skills. The middle one is my go to steed, I commute to work (6km, 10km, or 12km depending on how I feel and how much time i have left myself) and do longer rides with it. The unicycle(s) is a work in progress. I need to find some spokes in the garage and some time to lace up a 27.5" wheel from the old 20" wheel you see. It is a kind of garbage setup, as the frame is a home made mashup of a 20" unicylce frame that I welded to some front forks from one of my garbage winter bikes. The biggest issue would be that it is using the old cotterless hub/crank system and the frame is heavy and not necessarrily the straightest. Ha ha.
Well after a severe Traumatic Brain Injury, almost 6 years ago and nobility to still work or function normally.
Today I tried successfully to ride 50 m now I’m having to have a rest before I repeat again tomorrow.
I’m never gonna be able to ride 20 to 30 km again like I used to enjoy off-road but just trying to live life in new ways.
A few photos of my G36 taken yesterday. There’s still some fine-tuning to be done, but it’s already very nice like this
And a short video to see me in action :
Upgrades made:
The only weak point I find is the position of the brake lever. Anyway, with a poor-quality disc, it doesn’t make much difference.
I haven’t (yet) switched back to clipless road pedals. I’ve got SM-SH51 cleats with the springs tightened with 2 turns of allen key, and carbon XC shoes, but they make noise. I’m going to want to go back to clipless road pedals
It weighs 8.9 kg. It’s not really a factor for me, I use it mostly on the flat. And I’ve put on a few pounds this summer…
What I like most is the improved comfort. A few weeks ago, when I got back on my G36 after a year’s break, I found the old saddle very uncomfortable. I was afraid to switch to a bike saddle, but I’ve done it and I’m not going back. I’m already doing 1h30 rides without pain. I can’t wait to test myself on a longer ride.
Nice build! I like the aerodynamic posture.
And 8.9 kg with the Schlumpf hub is really not bad!
Time for my freewheel to get bigger! current build is a 20” with a bicymple hub and new build is a madazz hub with a nimbus dominator rim 27.5.
I have a week off work in two weeks time so hopefully I can get it built up so I can fall from a greater height
Mmmm… the seat looks like it has taken a bit of a beating… that decides what is going on my freewheel build for a start, just as well I don’t throw anything out
Hi DRD ,
Sorry I didn’t get around to responding to your message on the other thread.
Seat possibly looks worse than it is as I put gaffer tape layers on the bumpers, I find it prevents sharp edges appearing on the plastic and I just replace tape when needed.
You will find that a freewheel is going to get dropped lots more than a fixed wheel so it’s possibly not worth building it up to such a high standard to start with as I’ve noticed your builds are very pretty.
I managed to get the wheel laced up tonight with spokes looking right for tightening and trueing up tomorrow or in the week
Thank you.
You re absolutely right, I will put the Nimbus saddle and pedals that were on my 24" Nimbus that I learned on onto it – they have already bounced off the ground more that I care to think and have pretty much proved themselves as ‘worthy.’
I’ve got a set of Hope F20 pedals that I swapped off a bike for SPDs sitting waiting – although they would look pretty nice on it, I really don’t want to get my calves minced up with those. I had already drawn the line there, at least for a start
Here is my current 29” Muni and a before and after picture of it. I repainted to green, switched out the saddle to a black one from my first Muni, put a maxxis Dhr 29x2.6 tire on and wrapped the part of the frame most susceptible to scratches in paracord.
Nice work! And I’m a sucker for a tan sidewall; really makes it pop!
Thank you! The tan wall just gives it so much personality, I think.
Nice, that you can built your wheels alone wirhout of help and also it’s right. I think a bigger Freewheel is much better than a small one.
Sure is a good skill to be able to self build wheels as I imagine if you asked a cycle shop to build a unicycle wheel they probably would not want to do it.
I am looking forward to trying a larger freewheel which will be soon.
It really depends on the shop. Some would love to do so - because it’s new for them, it’s like a game -, but other would be reluctant - because they are afraid of not doing their job right. So… The best way to know is to knock at their door and ask them
