Who has completed a 100 mile ride?

Bummer. Oh well, there’s always a next time.

By the way, next time, I’d avoid going right through Leicester, if you go west I think there’s less hills.

Joe

The plan was to avoid Leicester, and just skirt around the west side of it. That’s where I had sat nav problems, ended up finding the hills of which you speak, and, possibly as a result of that ended up limping back with my tail between my legs.

But, as you say, there’s always next time!

I did my ride on a 28" unicycle. I would be surprised if Wobbling Wally Watts never rode 100 miles in a day during his epic journey. I haven’t got any evidence to suggest he did either, but he is still long distance king- anyone else rode a unicycle round the world lately? With no air in your tire?

If you mean sam Wakeling, then he’s already down on the list.

It is this dude, http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/member.php?u=4518

Yes, it was Sam Wakeling.

I have! I did my first 100 mile ride on the SINZ tour from Wanaka to Okura via the Haast Pass. Conditions were quite demanding as there was 20km of headwind up Lake Hawera and a further 20km of even stronger headwind on Lake Wanaka. It started raining at 65km and didn’t stop for another 70km. Haast Pass itself was not massive, but the descent down the other side was ferocious! I was hauling on the brake and still pedalling furiously through the driving rain, over cattle stops and bridges. There was a runaway vehicle uphill shute which I used to slow myself down. I must have worn off any remaining paint on my Airfoil’s braking surface on that 10 kilometre long downhill!

At 105km I hit the wall with a splat. Dr Ken Looi caught me at Solitude Creek and prescribed stuffing as much food down my gob as possible. I took his advice and ate a Leppin squeezy, a muesli bar and some cake. The kilometres up to about 130km seemed to tick by glacially slow. At this point I hadn’t seen the support van in several hours, and Ken had zoomed off ahead (does he ever hit the wall?). Some time later Connie showed up in the van and gave me some chips and more cake to eat. The sandflies were biting fiercely and I was getting cold, so my rest stop didn’t last long.

I continued down the Haast River valley and eventually the rain stopped as the forest gave way to boggy West Coast farmland and some roadside signs cheerfully announced the town of Haast ahead. The only place open was the pub where I sat and had a packet of chips before pushing on. The final 15km south of Haast were into another headwind. I ran out of water just metres before a petrol station and filled up from a rainwater tank. I got to Okura a few hundred metres short of 160km, so I went up a gravel side road for 200m and turned around to get the full 100 miles.

9:39:34 riding time
approx 12 hours total time
16.5km/h average speed
33.5km/h maximum speed

The next day I did a 121.9km ride to Fox Glacier township. 100 miles followed by 100 kilometres.

100 miles with headwinds. You’re a monster! Congrats!

I’d definitely like to try the 100-10-1 challenge. The longest I’ve managed to maintain a 10 mph average including stops is 70 miles. I think I still need better road food to let me keep going.

It’s worth mentioning that Lars is one of the elite/crazy few who have done 200 miles in 24 hours. Madness. Ken Looi is the only other person I know of who has done that.

There’s one other guy who did a ride similar in distance to Wally Watts. Pietro Biondo (from Quebec, I believe) rode a route that was roughly the perimeter of North America around 1983-4, about 12,000 miles. I met him once, in 1993, when he was a masseuse for Cirque du Soleil, who were in Manhattan at the time. Not sure if he’s still with them or what he’s up to. His ride was done on a low giraffe (which allowed panniers and no backpack). His wheel size was probably 26", so don’t know if he did any 100-mile days.

Steveyo, maybe you, Adam and I should plan a 100 miler sometime before the end of the summer. It can be one of our qualifiers for the Lobster ride in 2008.

It makes my taint hurt just thinking about it. But we should.

Added 7 MUT-bound cyclists and Ryan. All done in May/June 2007. Beau and Rob are 15 and I am 48, maybe the youngest/oldest?

Way to go, Beau! That’s amazing!!!

Maybe you can help get my brother on that list soon. He’s ridden 89 miles on a 29" uni over 12.5 hours, and he’s ridden on 3 uni tours (with a 4th coming real soon!), but he’s never hit 100 miles at one go, as far as I can tell.

Have a great ride! And congrats again to Beau!

That’s really the only thing that would be a problem for me. Stamina, strentgh and everything else no problem, but the “boys” and the sit bone fatigue is another story. Plenty of stops and change of cycling shorts every 25 miles would help!

oops, a duplicate.

I just did 100miles (yay me!) and I have to say that saddle soreness, while it was definitely present, wasn’t a huge issue.

I used a T7 handle and the KH freeride seat, Mountain bike shorts, and a healthy amount of Chamois Butt’r.

I know you tried the T7 and didn’t really like it. When I first started using it, I didn’t like it either (I was used to the GB4), but after a good number of miles, I’ve found it to be indespensible. One reason is that you can adjust exactly where your sitbones are on the saddle. By pushing slightly forward on it, you can push your bum toward the back of the seat and find the most comfortable spot (it changes!)

The other thing I did was, about every five miles or so, I’d slow down and stand up to pedal for about 30 seconds, sit for a few, and then repeat one or two more times. This would alliviate any discomfort I had and didn’t slow me down nearly as much as stopping for a saddle break.

I had some chaffing, but didnt’ really experience sit bone fatigue or significant numbness.

Added me and Øivind. We completed 190,61km in bad weather here in Norway in the road race www.styrkeproven.no.
