Video of your latest ride

@Kneupje Impressive hopping skills. When you hop on sloping terrain, do you use the brake to stabilise tings?

+1.
A very “hoppy” riding style. Not very fluent to watch, but Kneupje is provided with the ability to think about what line to take and then carefully choose ride that line - something I still have to learn. Also, it’s quite difficult to judge because the camera is apparently rarely level, but he seems to hop and ride very steep sections.

Thanks. I’ve only been unicycling for three years, so my confidence in riding isn’t 100 percent sometimes, especially on steep descents. Here in Belgium, the trails are either too easy or too difficult and dangerous to ride,. But yeah, I still need to gain some experience to ride more smoothly, I think. But I’m going at my own pace, because I once broke my foot landing wrongly. I especially struggle with staying in control and steering on longer descents if its technical.

Impressive!

I’m not sure about that. Everyone has their own style, and if that sort of riding is what gets you over and around obstacles, then that’s fine in my view.

@UniKirk Wheelou has already answered your question somewhat, so yes, I do use my brake to stabilize myself, but you have to be careful where you hop because there’s a chance you might slip. So while it’s not always the best strategy, I think, I’m not good enough to do everything in one smooth motion. Everything on a unicycle also seems so intimidating when it’s high and steep. :face_with_peeking_eye:

@Kneupje I too get intimidated especially if there are rocks. It is often difficult to get a sense of how steep a path is on video and usually seems less steep than it actually is. I am actually very impressed with your style and ability to mix between flow and hopping. I am struggling with going from flow to hopping on steep and actually also less steep descents. And you have only been riding for 3 years! I need to apply myself more!

You don‘t risk to have a surprise encounter with a bear, with that brake :loudspeaker:, I mean: with that bell! :bell:
We finally had some snow, too, today. Will post some pics later.

Yes, I know. The first Track was from a fox that had been walking on the trail.

Since long time again Gaisberg Salzburg with snow and ice

I don’t need one.. I think riding on ICE is very dangerous.

What does one do when one needs buttermilk after a snowstorm? Unicycle to the store, of course. Prepare for disappointment!

one hour all for nothing but to entertain us. And nice to see some of the other side of the world. Did I see you ride through a red light?

Hey, I got bacon out of it. Seems a fair trade to me. My cousin asked, “why did you need buttermilk? AND HOW IS BACON A GOOD SUBSTITUTE??” For which the answers are, obviously, “Because we ran out of buttermilk, DUH” and “What else would I get to replace buttermilk? NOTHING. At least bacon makes you feel better.”

And I can’t deny the red light. I’m usually a stickler for waiting, but I had no intention of stopping in a puddle of salty slush at -4C when there was no traffic in any direction…

You’re doing great! You have good posture with your back relatively straight. The arm flailing is fine while you’re learning and will improve as you ride. As you improve, try putting your dominant (right) hand on the seat handle and only use one arm for balance. This gives you more control and stability like when you hit an unexpected bump. And is a first step to effectively using a brake. Seattle used to have a very large unicycling community but I have been there in a while (I was at Seattle Muni weekend in I think 2015). But there are more unicyclists than you think.

from the first frame I thought you were holding a hockey stick
I wish we had such hills. Seems like a lot of fun to ride down and see how far you can get on the bumpy grass.

This Year the Ride The Blootz RTB 2026 is beginning of October in Heidelberg. It is a small meeting of older unicycles. Look here in the forum for more info

I love the Trails there. Amazing Trails.
