You need grips on the handlebar ![]()
But looks good, any pics of you riding on it?
back from the xc-tour! it was almost perfect, i’ve just to wait for the kh/schlumpf wheelset!
a changed the setup before leaving again, as showed in the first picture.
the ride was a 700vertical metter uphill and downhill of course too. on the top there is a singletraock with even still snow on it. i really really like this setup, you can even play with it:
Oh my God! That is something special! Is the future for off-road unicycling going to be the V Frame? If it is I’ll adopt it! I wonder what a 24" version would be like, especially on real technical single-track both up and down? Can you get by using the handlebars or do you have to go to the seat handle? If one can hone their skills to doing all their riding with the handle bars then we’d “look” far more like mountain bikers. I don’t know if that is a good or bad thing? I kind of like the looks I get because they think I’m riding around grabbing my crotch! As if!
Another, radical, idea might be a “collapsable” v-frame. Think everything about turtle’s frame but make it so the “down tube” can pivot forward or backward (and lock) that way if you have some gravel road miles to cover you can “drop” the down tube out, lock it and ride more like a bicycle. When you’re going to do some rough muni you can fold the downtube back against the main frame and lock it? Obviously something would have to be done about the main handlebar to keep it out of your way when doing rough muni?
Perhaps I’m overthinking this, if one can truly ride this new muni V-frame much like a bicycle then one wouldn’t need to be grabbing for a seat handle? Very interesting! Boy I need to make some friends with some metal workers!

at the moment i would’nt want this with my 24", for real technical stuff (mostly downhill) i think you dont need a handlebar, it’s dangerous and you cant hop very well…
for hopping i used the bar in front of the sddle, that works very good…
about the collabsable thing, i think gizmo is doing something like that, but for road riding, so he can change the distance between saddle and handlbar.
i’m sure V-frames will be the future for XC and road riding! i don’t think it will be for freeride or downhill riding…
I agree I think there is just “too much stuff” in the way to be able to do freeride/downhill riding. Still it might make a uni (at least a 24") more “one purpose” if it had a collapsible V-frame so one could (like I do) use the 24" for XC and free-riding? One of these days when I have time/money to experiment I’ll give it a shot. Looks great Turtle and everybody… have really got me excited about the future!![]()
ha, I just showed your uni pictures to a non-unicycling co-worker. She said “Cool! I’d ride one with handlebars, now that there’s something to hold onto”
What do you think the learning curve for this setup would be like compared to a regular learner uni? Has anyone learned to unicycle from the beginning on a uni with some kind of handlebar setup? So far, 100% of the people I’ve asked think the V-frame with handelbars is more appealing ![]()
@jeremy: i know i turned arounf…, like that you get a better angle for the V-frame…
Turtle: Love the v-frame in-flight pics. Its got to be a first for a v-frame, yes??. I didn’t know what the rear stubby handlebar was for until I saw you using it in the pics. I’m interested in seeing some video of you riding it on the road. Also, notice any flex or instability in the curved bridge yet?

Turtles V frame setup looks so nice, you make me jealous ![]()
wow, thats an awesome frame !!!

i put a vid online (it’s uploading right now):

Very cool video, Turtle. Looks like a fun ride.
What mountain is that? how long is the trail? it looks like a fun climb and descent. Me likes.
Yes that video was very well done. Apart from seeing you ride the Turtle’s V which was obviously the main aspect, I like it how you park the unicycle before dismounting.
Wow, that was a cool video, cool unicycle and very cool valve cap.
I love it!
You’re a pioneer Mr Turtle
i think learning with this setup ist very hard: the bikesaddle gives you no stability and you need free-hands for balancing. you can seen in the vid how also i’ve to let go one hand around the edges…
thanks for all the positiv comments, i put a lot of effort (and money
) in this project, so this comments are a kind of confirmation to me… ![]()

Do you think your V-frame set up would be better with a unicycle saddle? Like a more lower profile KH Fusion Freeride? That way you have the typical seat handle if you need it? Would still seem to me that a bicycle saddle wouldn’t be the ideal to use with more XC type riding? Just because of the stability issues; I image road riding wouldn’t be as big a deal?
no, if you’re getting used to it, it’s no problem, i tried it with the freeride saddle, but with this kind of position it’s much to wide in the front, and the legs are rubbing on it all the time…
Hi roadies,
I’m going to build a few handlebars shortly to test more riding positions on my 36" guni.
I designed something between the coker PI Bar and the custom “bike stem” ones, but without the wideness and with a lot of adjustability. It’s simply bolted over the KH handle and the seat tube (27.2mm).
I prefer relatively close-to-the-saddle handles. But I’ll keep the “toptube” pretty long first, then cut it to the length of the best position found after testing. It will be made of Alu 6061-T6, except for the steel bolts. Total model weight = 516 g. I’ll probably hack a few more grams with more machining or thinner tubes, right now the design might be a tiny bit overkill.
Inputs are welcome of course.
Vince
[EDIT] I’d be glad to share the 2D drawings (or 3D parts) to anyone interested. And I need to name the thing too!
