No, having the seat post clamp only on the seat post is a bad idea. Two excellent solutions have been suggested above. Even if they cost you more in parts and stuff, and perhaps won’t let you use the handlebar you already got, they are robust and costumizable. Just write down the steps, see if you can get the parts and make it a project. I am sure they will answer any question you have. This is tried and tested.
I was finally able to build my own 24" Fatty. Even though this size isn’t popular, I see a lot of potential in it: Compared to a 26" Fatty, it’s a bit more direct, more maneuverable, easier to climb uphill, and you can still reach a good speed (circumference about the same as a 26x 2.0 tire). This will probably be my new holiday unicycle the next time I go on holiday to the mountains. Since I’m riding my unicycle much more carefully now because of my shoulder injury, I’m kind of glad to be sitting a bit lower (probably more psychological, since the height is actually only 2.54 cm different from a 26 Fatty). It will have a permanent place in my garage.
I hardly ever, or actually never had any projects. I just ride unis or learn new stuff, but since I pulled the valve off my Night Rider Pro 36", I had to order new tubes. Before it was a Foss tube, but Municycle.com had only Shrader tubes since last week. I figured I should buy 2 of them, just in case.
But with these tubes the valve is wrapped in rubber, which makes it too wide for the hole in the rim, so I had to file out the hole to make it large enough. By the time it was done and the valve fit it was too late to take the 36er for a spin.
Another project I have is that the new 36" UW I got needs to be painted, is it is prone to rust. It seems like a big job to paint it myself and especially with a 4-year-old running about who will no doubt put his fingers on the wet paint or scratch it or what not, I figured I should find a shop who could do this.
I wanted it to be dark purple metallic, coz I don’t have purple unicycles. But the guy at the shop said that that would make it very expensive. Just black would cost 250-300 EUR and the metalic purple would add 150 EUR on top of that. I think that is a lot of money just for a coating. You can get a whole unicycle painted and all for that kind of money.
I haven’t decided yet what to do.
That is a lot of money for professional work. I use a wire to hang it i.e. on the curtain rod. A 4 year old will not climb that high when you remove all chairs in that area, I hope.
For that money I would think about letting it to be hot dip zink coated. Even though paint looks better.
If welding is in your skill set or you have someone who can weld for you, I would go to a hardware store that sells steel stock and buy mild steel tubing and plate and fashion mount to suit. You can buy a Shadow bar separately and a KH stiffening plate separately.
From the ursili bar thread. You may consider one of these instead, I have have not tried one but would like to. Check out that thread
Looks nice! I like that graphite colour.
Also, what make is this fender? Seems to be a reasonable size.
Good to know you‘ve taken up unicycling again. ![]()
Get a quote of a different painter to see if this is the usual price range where you live.
I had been looking around for the price of painting a whole bike which is roughly 750 EUR.
If I do it myself, I will only need to pay for the paint.
@Ulkicycling you talked about using a brush instead of spray painting. I was thinking of dark purple metallic. Are metallic colours also available so they can be applied with a brush?
Also don’t you see the stripes from the brush on the metal? I understand that drops from spray paint will be difficult to prevent.
Thank you.
Yes, without unicycling, I see no point in life ![]()
The mudguard is a no-name Aliexpress item. I’m just testing it. It’s actually too narrow and too short. It would probably fit tires up to 3.0.
Here’s a picture of my 20" Big Foot unicycle. Also a prototype.
I only post this because you mention dark purple metallic. I would not normally post bike stuff, but it is my latest project, so from that point of view it is on topic…
Your local motor spares shop will have a wide range of spray paint colours and with a bit of care in preparation and gradual application of many thin coats, you can get a really good finish. Using lacquer too gets it really shiny and durable long term.
That looks very nice. Today I looked in a shop in town what colours they had just to get an idea. There are various shops around town with spray paint. I think I have sort of decided to do it myself and don’t spend 400 EUR on the task.
Looks very good, too. Is that the same colour or is it a bit darker?
Pity that the mudguard on the 24“ is too small.
yes same color (black anodized). 1st photo: My cheap phone, with a slightly blue wall as a background.
2nd photo: More expensive camera in storage, under artificial light and against a white background.
This is probably a color temperature and white balance issue.
I painted the bike red/yellow with a brush without stripes and a seeder in white with stripes. Maybe it depends on the color and how much color was used to be fluid enough to flatten the stripes. Definitely some layers will be required to cover the underground.
I have no experience with metallic color.
This is a hilarious concept. Do a search for “tandem unicycle” on the forum to get some videos.
I suggest putting a freewheel hub on it to spice things up a bit. ![]()
Oh, and why should the riders have the same cadence? One could ride at 1:1 and the other at 1:1.5 ![]()
possibly needs to be with a fat tyre, because of the extra rider weight. You could make a Hatchet tandem.
Another idea could be to point both handle bars inward, so the riders can look at each other while they roll and have a chat together. so cosy.
I believe Corbin Dunn rides one in a video thAt a friend of his built, I will try and find the video .
