Yeah, a lot more grabbing on to the saddle or bar handle with all that toque you’ll be needing. Interesting that I first practiced the 36er without grabbing on , but with my arms in the air for control. The exact opposite is true with the Schlumpf. My practice now is to ride relaxed hands free on the g36. Handles are good, but not good for UPDs. Others can learn fine without UPDs, but not me, I seriously can say and admit I need them in order to get better..![]()
Does the Stadium feel like the Naomi that Im used to?. Nope, not to me. For me, I wished I spent more time “breaking” into to that saddle. I gave it away (quite a butt headed move)…oh well!![]()
I’ve actually got all the other tools, just not the wrench
my brother doesn’t live far away so it’s no bother to borrow his
I’ll definitely look at getting my own if it becomes a necessary maintenance tool often though.
I don’t really use my q-handle loads but it is at least nice to have somewhere to put my headlight and Garmin, so purely on that basis I might invest in a handle (maybe a KH just to mix it up a bit) in future ![]()
As for the saddle… if it doesn’t feel like the Naomi, then fine, as long as it’s hard, thin and fairly flat chances are I’ll be happy
I suppose time will tell!
Very nice work, Piece Maker.
Has anyone actually tried a unicycle with 24 spoke wheels? With an incredibly stiff rim (carbon), I’m thinking it might actually be feasable. Some road disc wheels come stock with 20 spokes and between their high speed descents and small road imperfections, I would be surprised if those wheels do not experience more force in every direction.
QX used to sell 20 and 24H hubs. I have one of the latter; it does fine laced 2x to a cheap Shining 650c rim.
See also this 36" touring wheel with 24 spokes.
Wow, I’ve seen saskatchewanian’s collapsible 36 while trawling the forum but never realized he sold it, or built it up with 24 spokes. I guess if it is strong enough for a 36, it should be more than strong enough on a 27.5!
Custom Unicycle
I just posted this on Antique Unicycle thread, but I thought I would show it here as well.
This was my latest unicycle project.
I don’t know why it’s coming out sideways.
A 50’s tricycle that was converted to a unicycle inspired me to build this.
If anyone knows how to turn the photo correctly, please let me know.
I’ve had that happen too. I’m trying to reconstruct from memory how it goes and I might not have every detail right, but more or less if I take a picture using my phone vertically oriented (“portrait format”), the phone actually stores the picture landscape-style but puts a tag in the file that means, “Rotate 90 degrees to view correctly.” It looks ok when I view it locally, but the forum software doesn’t handle it right.
I fix this using GIMP, the free photo editor. Other programs likely can do this too. When I open the file it says something like, “This picture should be rotated 90 degrees. Would you like to do that now?” I say yes, and when I re-save it, it’s stored correctly without that tag and it loads correctly here.
Like I said, that’s from memory but maybe it helps to put you on the path.
Really nice work with the unicycle project too!
Ok, aint much of a project.
But its a fine surly cunundrum 26’ setup - collectors version ![]()

Beautiful! Those good old Surly are beasts and they are sooooo nicely made!
Thought I’d share some recent upgrades to my Nimbus 27.5 Green Monster. Probably not that unique but I’m pretty fired up about it! I added a KH T-bar, some KH cranks, Shimano brakes, and Chromag Scarab pedals.
I rode for a few days with just the T-bar before adding the brake and I love the power position in which it puts your upper body. Really has improved my control of the uni. Also love the stance provided by the flared KH cranks. And no creaking! Damn. I didn’t think silence would make such a difference.
The brake has obvious benefit, but it vibrates during fast descents when it’s working hard. I flipped the Nimbus frame (but not the direction of the wheel) so the welded caliper mount is on the same side as the D-Brake. I think I’ll use it to attach a support for the D-Brake, but haven’t decided the best way how… Overall I think she looks pretty damn good :o
Bicycle sport saddle project
During an year try my idea about using standart bicycle seat on the unicycle.
Have a good result, particulary on long distance, where comfort is most important. My system is cheapest, has light weight (saddle+seatpost+handlebar=950g.) and enough strong, to be not crashing by fault down.
Paint the handlebar black! How does it feel compared to other saddles you own? I’m using a rail seatpost and I was wondering about your idea too… can you descibe better if you feel it better, as good as or worse than a common flat uni saddle or a Ushape uni saddle?
Bicycle sport saddle project
The handle itself is made from PP pipe fittins, it is extremaly strong and very cheap, but available in light colors only.
Bicycle sporting saddles made to be maximum comfortable for long dictance, but you need some time for adaptation and finding optimal position for your seat. All uni saddles have too wide front part, I don’t understand why. Bicycle saddle has slim front part and your legs don’t tach it even if you don’t take knees as wide as possible. So your legs and knees are in optimal position. Secondly, here is better ventilation, those men’s parts feel free and easy without pressing and with good airation. Of corse sport saddle is not so soft as most of unicycle one, so you should to lift up your seat if the road has obsticles.
I took about tree hundred kilometers and don’t want to return to common saddle for city transortations. Cheap bicycle saddles have too weak PU cover, that will be weared out by falls, so I made new cover from nature leather, taken from old wife’s bag.
Great idea to attach the handle! I’ll use it as soon as I can build it!
