Sweet! Really nice work there. You’ll have some fun on that.
That looks very nice and fast!
I’ve almost finished my 27.5er. Won an old Nimbus castle top 29 frame off ebay for £10.49 so got to work, Nimbus steel disc hub, KH freeride rim, Maxxis Aggressor 2.3 tyre, Nimbus alu post, seat clamp and Stadium seat and KH plastic pedals on 125/150 moment cranks.
Can’t wait to get a ride on it!
Carbon Seat!
Recently made a carbon seatbase compatible with regular KH hardware.
Seeing how almost everybody with the NNC flatfish uses the heavy KH adjustable seatpost and no one angles it down, I made the adjustment angle higher (to a maximum pictured), and a minimum of flat (as opposed to down).
The layup is 5 layers of 200gsm 3k, with reinforcements where I expect will have more stress. The final weight of this trimmed seatbase (before drilling and installing the nuts) is slightly under 115g.
Which brings me to wonder, what was the weight of the NNC, and with the existance of the flat KH bases, is anyone still interested in buying these things?
HI Wenn,
great job. This base looks great !
I cannot comment on the NNC weight as I never had one.
However, I can say that you will find people interested in buying some if you plan on making them available for purchase. Keep in mind that the few carbon base available seems to be from either private handmade runs or limited test runs.
Depending on the price, I can be part of the people liming up for one

Hi Wenn,
Nice job on that seat base. I’ve often thought that saddle design in unicycling could learn a lot from bikes. Currently we try to attain comfort almost purely in the padding. The biking industry knows that you actually don’t need much padding at all if the shape is right. I would love to one day see a uni saddle that has the relief channel built into the CF seat base itself, instead of purely in the foam that is slapped on top of it. This channel would also help strengthen the seat base too. You could then use much thinner profile foam, only on the top and sides.
Good work,
Mark
Yes, I come from a bicycling background too, and although i do not care too much about weight there, I simply cannot accept how heavy things are in the unicycling world. For reference, my saddle is a Dash Strike weighing something like 95g including the saddle rails. No offence to Roger or Kris Holm it you happen to read this, I understand why things are this way, and I probably will not be unicycling if saddles cost as much as bike saddles or broke on the tenth drop!
I do understand the want for the perfect saddle shape, and am working towards that too. This is an integrated saddle i previously worked on, its length is as long as a KH saddle with a Muni bar, ridiculously stiff but at a more reasonable weight. Sadly, the front grab handle was not too comfortable and I could not think of a better way or attaching the rear bumper so I am reverting to mounting the plastic handles.
Edit: Mark, I believe unicycle seats need a certain depth of padding for optimal performance. I actually did ride this pictured seat for 15km without padding (and simple thin unpadded shorts) and while it was not especially uncomfortable, it required full hands-on riding as any little bump would throw me otf the surface of the seat and allow it to shift behind me. Perhaps it would be ideal to have a perfectly shaped carbon base then a deep (1.5cm?) layer of soft foam to keep our butts planted on the saddle when not holding the handlebar
I might be.
Count me in. I think you’ll find a few. There was a post on Urban Unicycle Chat facebook page with 30+ replies from interested people.
Okay, I will be away for the next three days, after which i will start on a new mould and start a batch of perhaps five seats. Nuts will be bonded in and for now will follow the KH drilling.
The cost will probably be higher than the NNC as the seat is made largely out of Unidirectional instead of 3k fiber for a lighter end product.
Great! I’d probably rather buy the base with no hardware though, especially if that works out cheaper. Always wary of stripped nuts!
Are you UK based by any chance?
It seems to make more sense to offer a complete seatbase, with T-nuts already installed to make it as plug and play as possible. However you will still have to acquire the bolts and front/back bumper yourself.
However, it seems like easycomposites doesn’t ship UD to Singapore, so I will have to try to source for some UD locally ):
Looks nice! Now to the really tricky stuff:
A) how are your bearing holders bonded to the frame?
B) how are you going to manufacture this?
I’m curious of your ideas.
Mmh, okay, this isn’t really an answer, but I’m playing around with a few ideas I have, perhaps I will start a thread for my lightweight muni build once the frame starts taking shape.
I won’t build it for a 4.8 tyre anymore, going for a 100mm wide/390mm tall inner surface of the frame, hopefully I can get it under 4.5kg with a Duro Crux 3.25" tyre.
*I am not really a good rider, and I understand practice helps way more than gram counting, but I enjoy thinking about equipment!
Blue 29er GUni build
Building a GUni from scratch - it’s going to be blue frame, blue rim and black spokes
so should hopefully look epic!
I was originally going to try an Oracle 29 frame, but decided to go KH purely because I’m too lazy to be modding it. Turns out I’m going to have to mod the frame anyway because the hub is a slightly older version doh
137/117mm cranks to go on it - I reckon going to the 117mm will make for a fast road machine with two useful gears (as apparently the curse of G29’s is that you basically only ever use the higher gear…) and the 137mm will make for a nice XC machine… I guess I’ll find out ![]()
I’ve got a black seatpost and Impact Naomi saddle to sit on, as well as some blue Nukeproof pedals to finnish it. All this and a Halo Twin Rail tyre should make it nippy on the road but copeable for easy XC riding.
Not 100% sure if I’m getting a handlebar yet - I’m going to try without, as it’ll eventually be my ‘general getting around’ machine, so want to keep it fairly compact and small, but at the same time the speedy high gear might need it - again, I guess I’ll find out!
Excellent colour choice Eddie ![]()
We look forward to pics of your finished unicycle. ![]()
Ahh Alucard, sorry I missed your reply to me on FB (Yes I checked because I saw your username) ![]()
My original colour choice was to essentially build a miniature-sized Oracle 36er (that crazy bright green) - my plan was to beg UDC to roll me out a 29er rim from the green colour, and stick me some green stickers on the nimbus frame instead of blue, but ahh well, I’m happy with blue as long as there’s a lot of it ![]()
Probably won’t be finnished 'til the weekend as I have to wait for my brother to come round with his torque wrench (and for my dad to show me how to build this wheel…) but I’m getting all the ducks in a row now to make sure I can spend as little time as possible putting it all together now and spend the weekend learning to ride it ![]()
And the 29er GUni is complete! Well, it’s together anyway. I’ve not actually torqued the cranks up at all as I’m waiting on my brother to lend me the torque wrench, literally just put them on for the photo shoot ![]()
I went with a Nimbus Stadium saddle - figured I’d try something new, but didn’t want to go full-on flat with a KH saddle. I really like the Naomi saddle so hopefully the Stadium is somewhat similar ![]()
Spoked the wheel up, not yet ‘true’ but getting ready to be!
Completed GUni -
Nice blue guni.
You will probably finish by buying a torque wrench and all the other tools needed and I think you’ll feel the need for a handlebar since it becomes a virtually bigger wheel than your 36er when you shift up.
You can do without but you use to ride your 36er with a handlebar, so you’ll probably try your qu-handle on this one, i’m pretty sure about this ![]()
