Post Your 36er Here

My latest setup for music on the GO! :sunglasses:

36" with Component Upgrades

My KH 36" was upgraded with a few new components.

The ride is very nice but I am still considering the ideal crank length. As shown it has 135 mm cranks which are longer than I usually ride.

170 mm cranks.
Titec bar ends (L-bends).
Odyssey Twisted Plastic pedals.

Here’s my brand new 36 Nimbus Nightrider with Shadow Handle. I’m stoked to put some miles on this beast! Waaalrus here in the forums let me ride his 36 for a few miles on a long uni ride we went on last week, and the difference between that and the 29 I ride normally was much greater than I would have thought… I was sold! So I did the only reasonable thing and got one myself!

It’s purty…

Two things struck me: (1) The orange zip ties make the uni. (2) I didn’t realize UDC was using the drilled rim on anything but the Impulse. Looks great.

I didn’t think it’d have the drilled out rim either. It look sharp!

More about the tire here

Some detail photos of the new wheel and KH frame that is replacing the wheel and super-wide hub on my N36.
Photos show:

  1. old and new uni
  2. Nimbus Equinox hub and zero Q factor cranks giving narrow posture that I want for distance road riding.
  3. The Stealth2 profile is quite rounded and a big upgrade on the original Stealth
  4. The valve hole is smaller and makes a snug fit for the Foss valve - so no grommet required
I think there is a pretty decent weight saving over my N36

I guess I really should get one of those new 36" innertubes. The valve stems would look great on any of my unicycles.

Hi saskatchewanian,

Is that the coker 48 spoke rim? If so, did you drill it yourself?

It’s really like to ditch some of the weight on my coker.

And for those that have switched to the knew 36er clear tube: Have you noticed that much of a difference?

The metamorphosis is complete - my N36 is now a KH36

125’s on Equinox hub and Stealth2 rim with Foss tube - it rolls well.

sexy!

Monocyclism,

How is your brake lever mounted? I cannot tell from the picture and it is one item I always struggle with.

Do you enjoy your new unicycle? Do you notice the weight difference?

Scott

Hope these photos clarify the setup. Lately I have been experimenting with the handle acting as a stop for the brake level. In the two photos showing my hand operating the brake is appears in the fully off and fully on positions. My hand is moved to show the brake but normally my hands rest on the top of the bars.

In the fully on position the brake lever simply stops against the handle bar. So I don’t modulate the brake I simply pull it on fully against the handle bar. I adjust the power of the brake on the knurled screw so that when it is fully on it is ‘dragging’ effectively against the rim.

Of course this only leaves me with one setting for the brake when it is fully applied but I have found when riding down hill I can get used to an average setting for the brake that caters for several similar gradients. It is also possible to turn the knurled adjuster on the brake body when riding. Essentially I am accounting for my personal difficulties with applying the brake by simply being able to pull it on full and ride against the drag of the wheel.

Yes the new uni is a big improvement. No surprise it is lighter than my N36 setup and I am finding new vigour in my riding ability, especially on uphill gradients and against headwinds.

Hey might as well go the whole distance

Just trying to keep it simple

You have so many more things mounted on yours Geoff.

(PS: I leave the kickstand behind each time I ride.)

.

You should name this thing the “Blue Shark”! It looks like the first time you wreck on it you will be eaten alive.:D:D

I held a normal 36er tube and a clear one and they are much lighter.. but a lot more. If i rode the 36er around a lot i would get one, they would make the 36er a lot more fun i bet

Hey Dane.

Yup that is a Coker 48 spoke rim. I drilled just the outer wall of the rim when I had the wheel all apart to swap the hub. I don’t know how much weight I saved since I didn’t weigh the before or after but I remember calculating at the time that the actual weight saved would be about the same as the weight of 6 spokes.

I use 29er/700C tubes and have had great results but plan on trying out the new tube to see how they feel. There will be one or two in my next order from municycle.ca

Titan Makeover

I posted on this thread just after I bought my Nimbus Titan (Post #222), but I made a couple changes of note.

  1. I added a handle using the frame from my original 24" Avenir. The lollipop hub had gone bad so I decided this was a fitting tribute to my learner! I learned the design for this handle here on this great thread. Used the KH rail adapter and KH post.
  2. Detail of the handle mount. I had to remove the saddle handle. This is a KH Street that was on sale on UDC and I liked the Yellow color. Went with a yellow clamp to match.
  3. Including my hand to show how long the bar is. At 6’ 3" I wanted a long handle to stretch out on. Cheapie grips from Walmart. They will take a lot of abuse as I still have a lot of learning before I don’t have regular UPD’s
  4. 170mm Cranks with a lot of Q factor. I have the Nimbus 150’s that are pretty straight, but it will be a while before I am ready to go shorter.
