You’re so right! Could do with a different colour, though, in order to stand out properly - so everyone could admire its beauty.
Nice catch! I have profile cranks on my Dirt Uni and shortened them to a reasonable 125mm. I cut a section out and welded them back together.
Hi, Jim - nice straightforward solution! I toyed with the notion of cutting, drilling and re-tapping as well, but don’t know if I will actually attempt that.
I’ve also read that Profile makes a 125mm racing crank, but I don’t see a pair in stock, used or for sale anywhere - I’m going to get used to the 172mms for the time being!
Have you had any difficulties pulling these to change bearings? I doubt my axle is hollow, so I’m wondering if a conventional crank tool will work on these or if I need to invest in one of Profile’s specialty tools?
I think I saw that one on eBay, listed as a “wicked” unicycle. Which sounds about right - “Wicked, man!”
That’s the one ![]()
Those cranks are a hollow steel tube and cannot be redrilled and tapped. Cutting and welding would be the only option to shorten them. 170s aren’t bad though if you ride it on trails that demand them. When I got my 26er DM with 170mm 8spline bmx cranks I was also searching for shorter ones. I ended up just putting a knobby tire on it like it should have had and it’s been a great muni.
Thanks for the info! I couldn’t tell HOW they were constructed - they’re huge, like tree branches!
Honestly, I really have little desire to alter or modify these - I think I need to adapt to the design, rather than make it fit what I think suits me; I’m not a good enough rider to determine how some components figure in the performance of the whole package.
I just received this uni, so I’m still getting comfortable with it - the long cranks provide a distinctly different feel for me, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
For now I’ll just try getting accustomed to them!
Meet Golden. Custom build, QU-AX frame with Q-Axle hub and cranks. Sun Ringle 27.5x50mm rim, Maxxis Rekon 27.5x2.8" tire, TRP mechanical disc brake, 180mm floating rotor, KH Fusion saddle.
Very organised - mine is a cut down bike box and a LOT of bubble wrap!
Damn, that’s pretty - are you bring it to Unicon?
Yeah, I put it together with UNICON in mind; will be the only uni I bring.
You should bring the background as well. Very nice photo.
Jet Martinez does great murals all around Oakland: https://www.instagram.com/jetmar1/?hl=en
Very nice looking indeed. Now it needs some scratches on it from riding. The scratches don’t degrade the beauty, they add character to it.
I have had no problem removing the cranks and have not had to change any bearings. The crank splines are not tapered so they don’t get jammed on.
Pretty good job, finding all of those components in matching gold tones.
I’m also currently building a uni with gold accessories. But with the spec and weight I want to achieve, a pretty much had everything from shiny polished yellowish gold to matte bronze-orange gold tones. Often pictures n online stores did not match the real colour. I just ordered the third valve cap
They lost my luggage at the airport
, hopefully I came to Austria with a lot of time so I hope they will ship it to me before unicon with some time to train.
Wait, there’s about 3 weeks to go - are you in Steyr already???
Enjoy, I’m flying to Linz on the 24th and coming back on the 10th
