Nextie 36" carbon rim

Shoe Goo would be another option. I think it’s probably the same stuff. Probably not any cheaper though.

As you said mIchelin butyl airstop inner tube does not need to be stretched, it just needs to be inflated before mounting.

I uploaded the video I made the last time I mounted a 29" tube in a 36" tyre. The video is intentionally uncut, and unintentionally of poor quality. I’ve added chapters to make it easier to watch. I hope english subtitles will come.

They should give you the option of drilling the rim for a Schrader valve. The 32 foss / night rider light tubes have along valve stems.

I believe they do give you the option if you ask. It’s pretty easy if you have a drill to enlarge the hole yourself. I’ve done it with several rims without issues. Presta Valve holes are typically 6mm in diameter and Schrader holes are 8mm in diameter.

I wasn’t sure how the carbon fiber drills. I’m sure it could be opened up with a diamond impregnated drill / bur. Some size foss tubes are available with preseta valves. I just find a Schrader valve a more practical option. Just a matter of opinion, I’m sure I’ll catch some flack for that comment.

I’m thinking the issue may be the length of a Schrader valve. Carbon rims can have a very deep profile.

I don’t have a tube here at this point in front of me to measure the valve length but I feel they have a pretty long, aluminum stem with screw down retainer.

Any standard drill bit will work fine. And I’ve never seen a 36er Foss tube with anything but a schrader valve.

Good info. Thanks

Nextie do offer it with that option now - as I think it must have become clear that for some regions / build options Schrader was the only option.

I would presume this does mean there’s no reason why it can’t be drilled - naturally you’d prefer it done on their factory but it seems encouraging as an option.

Since its the factory doing the drilling, could they drill a Schrader hole then on the other side of the rim, drill presta? You use rim tape anyway so the tube doesn’t fall into the hole.

Full compatibility…

You can use a Presta valve in a rim that’s drilled for Schrader. You just need a $1 adaptor.

I suppose that theoretically a rim drilled for a Schrader valve would be slightly weaker, but I think the difference would be infinitesimal.

I am (pleasantly) amazed at the number of comments this thread has generated, and just as amazed at the level of enjoyment it has provided me in following it. I never knew of Nextie prior to this thread, or of the benefits of carbon rims.

After seeing Alex’s (Alex Around The World) Nextie carbon 27.5 Hatchet rim, and realizing that Nextie makes carbon rims in sizes other than 36”, I wondered if a carbon rim would make any difference in any of my unicycles (all 27.5 and smaller).

I have certainly learned a lot in following this conversation, and wish everyone the best of riding with their new rims! Wow! Does that make it seem like I work for Nextie? I don’t. Just little ol’ me, enjoying the unicyclist community conversations and happenings, while realizing this conversation/thread “may” be winding down/nearing the end.

I have a feeling this thread is not winding down, but shifting into high gear as people get their rims and start answering all the questions this thread has amassed, solving potential problems, reporting on how the rim rides, and trying to convert people over to carbon 36” rims.

You know what? I had the exact thought, as soon as I hit “Reply”!

How do you think they get the holes in it in the first place?

What length valve stem is needed to make it out of the wheel and still be able to fit a pump on it?

40mm for most pumps with two holes. More like 50-60mm for the combo pump heads.

Mine above is a 40mm and it just comes out enough.

The standard Foss Schrader 36" tube valve is 35mm long. Depending on your pump you may well get away with it as the Presta measurement includes the valve end which your pump doesn’t grip onto.

I use these adapters.
