New Prototype disk brake muni?

Hi guys and girls

Does anyone have any infomation about this sweet looking disk braked muni! It sounds like its a protype that might be produced from reading this blog: Muni Weekend Episode 3: Oilcan - John's Run Interestesd to find out more

Yup, that’s Josh from unicycle.com on their latest prototype. He was riding it at Vancouver MUni Weekend. It’s a Large Marge rim with a Surly Larry 3.7" tire, and the Nimbus disc brake system.

I heard that UDC has one in the works, I believe it’s to be a muni, even has a code name. But, I can’t tell ya cuz I’d have to kill ya, and we all know how that’d work out

Word on the street is 2011, hub and frame

Kinda pricey and time intensive though, to invest in a new frame, hub, rotor, caliper, then rebuild the wheel, all for a disc brake.

I have rim brakes on four unis, can’t say I have any complaints, only had one leak in two years, did it myself when I UPD’d in a rock pile.

The only place I can see wanting one is for muni cuz the rim brake pads do tend rub as the rim moves side to side, but it’s no game ender.

Sure is purty, nice frame, color coordianted cranks, hmmm.

Josh always uses color, and attention to detail in his custom rides. He let me ride that one for a mile or so on the Sunday MUni Weekend trail in Vancouver. Sweet! It eats up the terrain. But for me, who likes to roll and doesn’t hop much, it had too much air in it. With lower pressure it could probably cruise right over small logs and baby head rocks! Me like.

Gigity gigity.

I noticed a couple more pics on the UDC blog (http://www.unicycle.com/blog/?paged=3):

Nimbus Oregon 3 sm.bmp (1.83 MB)

why the  ?

Nice, bearing holder brake mounts!

I might need to invest when they come out:D

Does that mean there’s a Nimbus steel-axled disc-compatible hub, or are you risking the aluminium-axled one like on the 36er?

(you’ve got the disc on backwards, by the way. The spokes should curve the other way - it’s to hold the rim of the disc taught under braking to stop it crumpling, although probably less important on a unicycle where we’re not going to brake as hard as a bike)

Rob

just thought i should clarify, I know nothing of this :stuck_out_tongue: I just stole the picture from facebook

Your post shows up as not having any content on my computer. . . . maybe the  is more appropriately directed to my computer?

Edit: Bizarre - the pic shows up on my phone just fine, in both your post and mine. :stuck_out_tongue:
Edit2: My work blocks facebook, prob why no pic for me. PITA.

Is that a mountainuni rig?
See thread: Mountainuni Disc Brakes Have Arrived!

Nurse Ben seems to have some inside info indicating the new one from Nimbus for muni will be steel: 26'' vs. 29''

Bearing holder brake mount…

uniShark, I think you are probably right about it being from Mountainuni.com.
At least it looks like their idea for the bolt-on mount that I saw somewhere in that thread.

I was one of the testers for the weld-on mount with their custom rotor bolted on to a pair of dual-hole (125/150) Sinz cranks, and it has been working flawlessly for months. I love having that brake on my 36er, it is so smooth. Also, I can now just open it up on any size downhill knowing that if I need to slow down I can slowly modulate the brake to get my feet spinning less that 200 rpm’s…

I definitely want the new MUni coming out from UDC though. I don’t think I can wait until then though, so I plan on getting a Nimbus 26er to hold me over for awhile. Right now I have a poor excuse for a MUni, it has a 2.5" trials tire on a 20" rim (I realize it probably doesn’t even qualify to be called a muni, but it has a fat knobby tire and it’s good for hopping around). My 36er is actually better for going offroad until I get a real one.

Is my aluminum hub that fragile?

Is the aluminum hub on my Nimbus Impulse (disc brake) really that fragile? I’ve gone off short curbs with no problems. Or is it more of an issue when it comes time to switch cranks. Don’t mean to threadjack. Just asking.

I didn’t mean to suggest that… I’d guess it’s less strong than a steel axle though, but significantly lighter. I’ve been wondering since they came out whether they’d be stong enough for my mostly xc muni riding.

Oh it is fun reading this thread…

What I will say is that there are a several different threads of developement that UDC have running in parrollel. Some things you see will be in production some may not.

Feedback is good.

Have fun.

Roger

Oh… just had a thought!

we coud do a sweep stake on this one… how many pre-production/protype parts on the unicycle picture that Alister posted?

and of course I wont confirm which is which…

So how many were there on that unicycle?
