What kind of music download programs do you guys have if you have any? Whats the deal and are they any good? And yes, I know its illegal and I’m going to die, a horrible, horrible death and then go to hell. Jus t curious cause i used to have Kazaa Lite but a bunch of crap got on our computer so we deleted, and now i just want one again.
WinMX and SoulSeek. Niether has given me any problems yet. They may not get the music as fast(if you know how to work it they do, and each is very different), but there doesn’t seem to be any bundled software.
Audioscrobbler and Last.fm. Not only is it free, legal, accessible from anywhere and totally free from installing random crap on your computer it will also find you more of what you like, leaving you free to then go and buy CDs you know you’ll love.
Limewire, I have used WinMX, Kazaa, Morpheus, BitTorrents, Napster(good times) but I like Limewire the best, just because… I’m sure there are better programs, but 800 songs, 6 movies and plenty of other stuff, have still convinced me…
you name the movie in theaters or out and its avalible somewhere if you know the places to look. Newer stuff is usually a cam, but every now and then you can find a screener dvd rip. I just gutted my movies and am down to 30 or so movies on my data drive.
One of my buddies just downloaded every episode of the wonder years to give you an idea of the obscurity of stuff that is out there.
I Dl’ed:
Passion of the Christ(the week it came out)
American History X(DVD rip)
Fat Tyre Fury (2, 3, 4) all ripped
Eskanaba in Da moonlight(ripped)
and a ton of anime. All of them were divx, but i converted them to DVD format so it works in some players.
Using Ares, I’ve downloaded Passion of the Christ, The Matrix, O Brother Where Art Thou, Bowling for Columbine, Orange County, and Monty Python’s Life of Brian. I think I’ve done more than that, but I can’t think of them now.
OH I just remembered I downloaded Rocky Horror Picture Show, because my parents wouldn’t let me see it, but I haven’t watched it yet!! Oh, and Supersize Me!!!
eMule, eMule Plus, and Shareza are open source P2P programs that contain no bundled spyware. WinMX is a closed source P2P program that contains no spyware.
Limewire claims that they have no spyware, but they’ve bundled crap with it before. I don’t trust them.
Ares bundles an adware program. You can choose not to install that little surprise during the install, but if you click past it you’ll get it.
Azureus is a nice client for BitTorrent. It’s clean, no adware. The trick with BitTorrent is knowing where to look for the torrents to download.
With P2P programs it is important to be smart about what you download. If you download a video and end up with a RAR file containing an EXE file, don’t run the EXE file, you have no idea what it is or what it will do. If you get anything that is executable, don’t launch it.
You also need to make sure that Windows is not hiding the file extensions. Tell Windows to show all extensions. That way you will be able to see if that MP3 or MPG file is really an MP3 or MPG file. If you have the extension hidden it is too easy to get tricked.
Thanks for the link, Phil. I tried this last night and it was excellent. Even my music-snob friends approved of it. I’m a little concerned that it might not be completely legal (at least in the states…) but only a very little concerned.
I was going to say “I don’t know because I haven’t bought anything yet.” But you might have meant “where am I getting my music?”
Back in the heyday of the original Napster, I downloaded a bunch of songs (about 6GB worth). I still have all of that. Plus I used iTunes to rip all of mine and Jacquie’s CDs–quite a pile. iTunes makes it convenient, as you can set it to eat each CD, automatically rip the CD, then spit it out.
iTunes uses either their proprietary AAC lossless format, which is high quality but has compatibility issues with other players and software, or MP3. I ripped all of our CDs at 160kbps MP3.
I think when you buy music from the iTunes store, they come in AAC format. But I think there’s also a way to convert them to MP3s. If I can’t, I might be less interested in buying there as I want all my music to be the same kind.
iTunes software works on both Mac and Windows, and is free.
I use WinMX mostly, occasionally SoulSeek. I use Azureus for Torrents, but recently suprnova.com became a pay site, so I am looking for another free place to get torrents. SoulSeek is pretty obscure, nobody really uses it. Whats the difference between open and closed source P2P programs?
