MUni Weekend 16: Auburn, CA

Hey I thought I was the first to ask for floor space

I had snuck into a quick reply email about muni weekend so you might have missed. I just emailed you again to confirm though.

The last time I rode it, I did most all of it in high gear on my 24 and rode it at some really fun high-paced speeds. It could be done on a 36 too…but the climb back out is a little steep.

Possible change of ride schedule

Hi all,
Tom Holub has pointed out to me that they’re running the Tevis Cup Race the same day as we were planning on riding the Auburn trails. The Tevis Cup is a crazy-long, crazy hard horse race, 100 miles from Lake Tahoe down to Auburn. Though it will not be on any of the trails we’re going to ride, it introduces an unknown parking question. There might be a lot more people there than on an average Saturday, which could be a problem for us in our shuttling and parking. So I’m thinking of moving the Auburn riding day to Friday, followed by Salmon Falls on Saturday and Stevens Trail on Sunday. I will try to learn more, but this seems like the safer way to go. Also it leaves the hardest ride for the last day, which might be a good thing.

In addition I have a better plan for riding my favorite trails in Auburn. Instead of a 7-mile loop with 1000’ of climb, much of it on pavement, I thought we could start at the top on the Foresthill Divide Loop, ride that to the Connector Trail, ride the whole Connector Trail, and meet up with the Clementine Loop near the top. This leaves the very best parts of that trail for us to enjoy. The downside is that it involves a shuttle, and the associated logistics. The upside is that most of you will be riding new trail, and the best part of Clementine will be more enjoyable without the long slog uphill. People who still want to ride the uphill will be welcome to do so, of course!

So if that day of riding is moved to Friday, will it be a problem for a lot of you? I don’t want to do it on Sunday because our “fun” competition events will be less meaningful on that final day. Also, many people have to leave early on Sunday and I’d like them to enjoy our “featured” ride.

Still recommended. The Connector Trail is fun on a 29" because it has many fast sections and is less technical. But the Culvert and Confluence sections of the Clementine Loop are plenty challenging for me on my “main” MUni, my 24" Wilder. That’s what I will use. My 29" is less fun on the technical stuff, but yours may be beefier, and/or you may be like Tom, and really enjoy riding one also.

Oh maybe you did. I’ll stop putting numbers on. :stuck_out_tongue:

This trail doesn’t involve a climb out, so maybe you’re thinking about the Stevens Trail? I very much do not recommend attempting that trail on a 36". You would definitely hate it on the way back (1200’ uphill), and I consider it dangerous enough on your “best” MUni, geared or not.

Having said that, if you like 36" Muni, the Foresthill Divide and Connector Trails are very fun for 36". You could also ride most of the Salmon Falls ride on one as well, though you would definitely be walking the most interesting sections.

I can’t make it to the Friday ride, so for me, yes. :frowning:

If I can time this with a visit to see my father for his 75th, it might work out…

John, do you live in Auburn? My father lives in San Jose, so I’d try to split my time.

Sounds like fun, I’ll work on my plans, too bad there’s no snow yet, then it would be a two sport vacation

If you excited about CMW and glad John is puttin it together, give him a big whoop whoop! Go to his FB and whoop whoop! his status or photos!!

WHOOP WHOOP!

a big WOOP! WOOP!
see you there

whoop whoop!!!

I plan on going. I will ride a 29". Friday for Auburn is good for me. What time will the Friday ride start.

My house is in Carmichael (Sacramento), about 2 hours away from San Jose. The rides will be Auburn, Colfax and northeast of Folsom, in that order. Hope you can make it!

I guess I’d better go WHOOP WHOOP!

TBD. Fun events down at the confluence first. Though I hate pushing it to Friday, I think it’s the safer bet. Plus we’ll have the place more to ourselves.

Guys, Tom just clued me in to a great fact: there is a nice disc golf course right near Auburn! Check it out: http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=715

We have to play a round on one of the days of CMW.

Need a ride

Hey!
Is there someone who can pick me up on their way? I live in Burlingame and will have 2 unis (20" Trial and 24" Muni).
Please write me a PM if you have space, thanks!

And another thing: If one of you guys has an extra pad it would be great if I could use it as mine had to stay in Germany.

Schedule change is official

That’s right, I’ve moved us out of Auburn so we don’t get crowded by the Tevis Cup race. We will do Auburn on Friday. Saturday will be Salmon Falls/South Fork trails, and Sunday will be Stevens Trail. If travelers are concerned about missing the Auburn riding, it might be possible to do the fun events in the morning, stop for lunch and then do the main ride in the afternoon?

I’ve updated the information on the website, and added an Accommodations and Travel page, which will hopefully answer some of your questions. More details are in the works. If you don’t like the idea of sleeping on the floor, I’ve added info about the downtown Sacramento Hostel, which is in a cool old mansion and has a range of very affordable choices!

Please send in your registrations, so I can plan for the numbers of people and otherwise be prepared so we don’t have to do paperwork during the actual weekend.

I’m working on a possible big group dinner and movie event on Saturday, at STEP (also in Carmichael). We have a classroom where everyone will actually fit, with a big screen to show anything you can display on a computer. Then we can have food brought in. What kind of food?

Okay folks, I’ve heard a lot of people tell me they’re coming, but I only have four registrations so far. They are all from different states/provinces though! That’s Maryland, Texas, California and British Columbia.

If more registrations don’t come in pretty soon, I will have to cancel the T-shirts. That’s okay with me; the first MUni Weekend didn’t have T-shirts either. How about bike jerseys? Too expensive.

Please register, or at least give me a head’s up that you intend to attend. But you should pre-register, so you don’t have to wait around for me to do a bunch of paperwork before we can start riding each morning… :stuck_out_tongue:

I have been lurking silently with great interest…

I happen to be visiting family in Nevada City, CA for a while, and am hopeful that I’ll still be here for the MUNI weekend. I should be certain enough to register in a couple weeks…

I look forward to riding with y’all!

I knew I forgot something…

Have one little question, though:
Is it possible to pay in cash when I arrived and just send you the form attached to an e-mail?

I assume the t-shirts are in male-size…

Game on, I am ready to ride

Just sent my registration! Can’t wait!

You will still need to sign a paper copy of the waiver, or scan your signed one to email it. Please be sure to bring exact change.

As am I, though it’s still up in the air about whether there will be any. Still only four registrations so far…

Looking for my USA # - you’d think I would’ve written down something like that…
