I typed 33 wpm. Never been my best skill. I have trouble because I watch the keyboard when I type. So when I have to read then type it really cuts back on my times.
It took me a couple of gos to “get into it”, but now I am getting in the fifties. My last three goes-
Astronauts- 49 wpm
Baseball- 52 wpm
Astronuats (again lol) - 51 wpm
At primary school when I learnt to touch type we had to have material like cloth to go over the keyboard and our hands, of course we would always peak but we eventually learnt to not look at the keyboard like I am not now as I am typing.
That’s an awesome idea. I tought myself to touch type without looking, so it’s not the ‘proper’ way, but it certainly helps me out. Plus it means I use the apropriate grammer, because I cannot stand writing like: c u l8r. I think it is just plain lazy lol
That test gives me 50wpm. I’ve never learnt to type “properly” - I don’t look at the keyboard much, but use random fingers rather than the “correct” ones. I had a time when I thought about learning proper touch typing, but it slowed me down so much I got annoyed with it and gave up. It’s really good that they teach people to type in primary schools - much easier than having to unlearn sloppy habits later.
Took a promotional upgrade test at work, got a low rating of 34 WPM (35WPM+ is a high rating) due to hitting the Enter key twice on accident, computer clocked my actual speed at over 45 WPM, but because I missed one line, I got a low rating.
As for what I do at home now, I’m comfortable at about 28 to 30 WPM on average.
I can do better. I did a 2 min. Astronaut test for 66wpm gross. That one has a lot of double-quotes & non-standard words/names in it. Plus I think I did too much backing up to correct stuff. Then I did the Wizard of Oz for 1 minute and got 77 gross.
Just pop the keys off your current one, rearrange them, and change your mapping. I did this for a while when I was in college. I got used to it fairly quickly and did find it more efficient than QWERTY but since I often had to use computers other than my own readjusting every time I sat down was more trouble than it was worth.
I’m pretty average, using random fingers, but I have to look at the keyboard. I did try a touch typing tutor for the PC but trying to do it properly was so frustratingly slow that I gave up. I couldn’t work through the speed barrier to make it worth it. My brother-in-law is a two fingered typist of secretarial speed! His handwriting was appalling, so he needed to communicate the written word somehow.
Slightly off topic, being a scientist I tend to read very slowly and carefully, word by word, to get the full implications of each word. I remember being shocked when, many years ago, my sister-in-law said that she had read “Gone with the Wind” in an afternoon (frankly, I don’t give a damn!). So I bought a book to “Double your Reading Speed”. I haven’t finished it yet!
