Freewheel Unicycling Megathread

I unfortunately don’t have many videos of me freewheeling, but here is my very first freewheel session just after building up my Flick-Flock wheel in July:

Nice

I find I have quite a few ghost shifts to freewheel from fixed after a hard UPD. I got one on video here:

I have both of my buttons off. I’ve had a few fixed to freewheel while riding, too.

Here are a couple early videos of what I consider to be pioneering freewheel unicyclists (Carina Rögner and Flaviu Cernescu) that I don’t think have made it onto this thread yet:

Big difference in protective gear between the 2 videos!

Only riding freewheel every so often as I’m currently practicing lots of freestyle (wheel walk and one-foot wheel walk seem to help my freewheeling!). Here a few good coasts with the freewheel on a great day in the Bavarian Alps (we carried the unicycles tied on our backs up the fixed-rope climbing route 300m up the face to the summit: “Klettersteig” in German/ “via ferrata” in Italian). You can hear the cow bells in the background.

I also bought a Freewheel. A Nimbus Drift Cotterless and i would be the Service the Hub. It’s possible to Service this Hub and How it goes? I don’t know it.

The Whell has new Spoke Nippels because the old one broke and it was to old. So it hope the new Nippels with the old spokes are going well to fix the wheel and it’s ready for the first ride.

UDC UK sell the Nimbus Drift Trike spring and pawls set.

https://www.unicycle.co.uk/nimbus-drift-trike-hub-spring-and-pawls-set.html

The hub is pretty easy to take apart and service, so long as you have a set of split ring pliers. To disassemble, remove both cranks, then remove the split ring, bearing and spacers from the disk side. The axle will then slide out of the non-disk side.
When reassembling, be careful to push all of the pawls in while reinserting the axle. Sometimes you can spin the axle in the freewheeling direction while inserting to get the pawls to move in by themselves, but it doesn’t always work - in short, be careful.

If you’ve just received it used, I’d recommend disassembling and re-greasing the clutch if nothing else. You can have a good look at the state of the pawls at the same time.

Common issues with these hubs are smashed pawls (if it starts sounding weird or stops engaging properly, stop riding it), or cracked hub shells (if you do a lot of climbing on long cranks this is more common).

Hi!

For the past week, I’ve been riding a 29" freewheel with a PIPIFAX hub.
The only photo I have of this unicycle is with Stève the Seal, a famous French open water swimmer I met in the street a week ago.

I was delighted to meet him, and started swimming in the sea myself.

With this unicycle, I’m only coasting on the flat or on small gradients to try and make the longest coasts possible.

On the flat, even with a bit of wind at my back and starting the coast at 25km/h after 100m, I’m already almost at a standstill. It’s impossible to go past 150m because the hub is braking the wheel so much.
I don’t know if it’s related and if others share this observation, but my hub is making cracking noises. Almost since I fitted it a year ago.

But today, I beat my record on a gradient of around 2%, with a coast of over 400m (between 420 and 430m). I hope to pass 500 and 600m soon, but after that I’ll be limited by the length of my spot.

Hi,
I’ve been looking for a freewheeling hub in the same style as the M4O Flick Flock hub, so it is interchangeable between freewheel and fixed drive that will fit onto my KH 24 2022 model. I don’t really want to make any modifications to my frame, like welding on tabs for the disc mounts. I’m also not wanting to use a schlunph brakeFast D’brake mount, because of the vibrations, so if anyone has any ideas on what type of hub I can use (If there are any), I would love to know. Also, what are peoples experiences with M4O 27.5 Techno’s? I was wanting to buy one, but not sure if it is worth the price. Also does anyone in Australia know how much it would be to ship the unicycle here? Thanks

Hi,
I have a Flik Flok hub to sell. As far as I know, it should work into a 2022 KH frame. It has a left tab for brake, right?

Thanks for the offer, but unfortunately, the 2022 KH was the year before it went to the left side, so sadly, this won’t work for me unless I weld tabs onto my uni, which I’m not really willing to do, as I said in my previous post.
Thanks again though for the offer.

Oh, sorry. I thought KH and Schlumpf would have aligned the years of their models. Not this time!

So, to reply to your first question: you won’t be able to use any brake on a freewheel with your current frame. It only allows for external disc brake. Imagine how this system works: it stops the cranks from rotating, hence stopping a fixed wheel from turning. Now, what’s the issue with a freewheel? Well, if you stop your crank from rotating, your wheel keeps turning! That’s the basics of a freewheel
So, if you want to get started with a freewheel, either it is switchable or not, you’ll have to modify your frame or buy a new one. Sorry for the bad news :frowning:

Ohhhh, I didn’t think about that  Ill probably just need to pull the trigger and get the M4O uni  Thanks for the information though, it really helped.

Have been riding more rocky stuff recently which has been a lot of fun!

Recently put my saint brake back on with a bigger 203 rotor and that has really helped with taking drops at speed. Although the trade off to using a weaker brake is it’s less smooth for fast coasting down easy sections. Had to adjust my body position a tiny bit to get the same speed.

Here’s a short vid from our group ride near Denver. Credit to @1man1uni for the recording and great edit! Video link

Just got a wheel with the nimbus drift trike hub. Felt confident using the brake, but I will follow the A. Kinsella Johnson tutorial and try to learn first to ride brakeless, so I’ll switch to a normal saddle for more confidence riding with both hands on the air.

As for me, since yesterday I’ve been freewheeling on my commute to work. I’m lucky, it’s only one kilometer.
I’ve been dreaming of being able to do this for years, and it’s finally coming true.
I think that having the constraint of practising a little every day will enable me to increase my rate of progress.
I try to use the brake and put my foot down as little as possible.
This allows me to work the coast with one hand on the saddle to avoid the uni escaping too far and be more discreet.

Trying to spin the wheel with the hands while coasting, hard but fun to try, it felt way easier in a slight uphill. I have seen some people doing this wiht bc wheels, but never with a freewheel uni.

Fair play, I can barely take my hand away from the brake lever when I ride my freewheel.

How long have you been riding freewheel?

You should really try to ride without touching the brake, you can start little by little, but this way you’ll be able to improve your coastings or brake glidings,. I directly took out my brake after watching J.K. tutorial. At first I didn’t like it as I could already ride very comfortably the freewheel with brake and without it I was even scared of getting into the unicycle, but it was totally worth it as now I can ride around the city almost coasting all the time.
I started a week ago, above you have my first time riding it (with brake), though I have a clear advantage as I already knew how to do coasting on a freestyle uni.
