Forum update one year anniversary šŸŽ‚ What's your opinion so far?

On my phone the default is Samsung internet. On my iPad, it’s Safari. And I don’t know about right clicking on the devices.
I don’t tend to read forums on a PC. I’ve never been to this forum using a PC.

I like how there’s more visual focus :asterisk: on the actual discussion instead of redundant presentation of the user.

In the old forums a short one-sentence reply could take up lots of vertical screen space as it sometimes came with various irrelevant and redundant information such as a larger avatar image, the user’s account creation date, comment count, multi-line location, age, title, riding habits and maybe a multi-line signature that you’ve seen hundred of times and don’t even find funny.

I believe the current rather clean design is more beneficial to new users: Some new users are simply overwhelmed by all the visual information and cues presented to them. :eyes:

I also like, how there’s an even better ability to create an appealing user profile :bust_in_silhouette: and also add a bigger image like e.g. @gockie, @pierrox or @UniMyra did.

And the links the Open Unicycle Calendar :calendar: and Map :world_map: at the top.

Oh, and did I mention emojis?!

Yes but you forgot the most important one of them: :uni:

(also what nice is how easy it’s become to add a photo, no more external hosting and img link…)

I could make a lot of jokes about this, including both Star Wars and your mother, but I won’t.

I’ll reinforce this issue. Compared to the old forum the thing I miss most is the age and location of members. With the large number of members I do not know these details of everyone and it is nearly impossible to engage in an relevant discussion without knowing if you are talking to a young kid or senior citizen or what part of the world they live.

If the current software does not allow this information maybe the software provider be encouraged to add these features.

People can still show their location in their member card.

There’s an official translation plugin: Discourse Translator - Plugin - Discourse Meta

Looks like this:

Though I’m a bit reluctant to install on the forum a plugin that is asked by so far only you I guess?
Also, you can’t choose in which language the message will be translated to. It uses the user’s language interface.

Would you guys be interested in such a feature on the forum?

I asked in the German sub forum if something like this is needed. Maybe someone capable of speaking the other languages can ask in their sub forums? I think, everybody who reads and writes here (in the English main forum) does not necessarily need it. But there are a bunch of users only using the language sub forums.

It would make it easier. It might even encourage users of more diverse languages to start participating in the forum if suddenly everything is easy to read in their language.

About a year ago I asked Kevin about lack of FTP access to the personal web pages. Now, even the web pages themselves are inaccessible. In the past, before the upgrade, we all had problems with the photo albums and then they went away entirely. Will that stuff ever be returned?

No idea. You’ll have to ask @gilby for that.

I can point your subdomain to any IP address or cname record if you need that.

Yes. I want www.harper.unicyclist.com/ to point to staff.washington.edu/gharper/

Can you do that? Then I’ll see if that fixes all of my broken links scattered about.

Maybe I don’t understand. www.harper.unicyclist.com/ seems to now point to staff.washington.edu/gharper/www. which doesn’t help. I wanted

www.harper.unicyclist.com/<<(whatever else is typed)>>

to point to

staff.washington.edu/gharper/<<(whatever else is typed)>>

Is that possible?

Gilby…moving in the background again. Thanks. That worked perfectly.

I like the automated notifications. If I respond too much to a single user on a thread, I’m invited to include others in the conversation. And if I post on a thread that has been inactive for more than a year, I get a warning. Because anything more than a year old on the forum is old, out-of-date, bo…ring. Why add to an old thread when you can make a brand new one?

Overall, I’m really happy with this version of the forum. Really smooth to use, good on mobile and desktop, doesn’t leave much to wish for other than getting more members.

I’ve put my opinion on the idea of a built in translate function out there before, personally I’m afraid it might turn the different language sections into ā€œthe same people as on the English speaking section, but auto translated to another languageā€. With a lot of technical jargon (as a discussions about unicycles tends to have), auto translation, as good as it has become, still sucks.

I’ve been annoyed by the ā€œthis thread has been inactive for over a yearā€ message a few times too, as I think it is good etiquette to not open a new thread for the same topic multiple times. On the other hand, I’ve seen 7 year old dead threads getting revived to respond to completely off topic side discussions, if the warning message stops that from happening, I think it’s good.

Bumping very old threads could be bad practice on forums where old data becomes obsolete, which is not often the case here.
The setting can be tweaked.
What values would be good in your opinion? I can also completely disable this warning.

I think there’s oftentimes a value to starting a fresh thread. People aren’t likely to read through all the posts on old threads, equipment mentioned is often obsolete or unavailable, people who posted have frequently moved on, etc…

I use the search feature frequently and read a lot of old threads, but when I’m actually considering buying or learning something I’m usually looking for the most recent threads. Things have changed since 2006 or even since 2014. There aren’t many people running 170mm cranks, 24" wheels or rim brakes these days.
