Who rides motorcycles?

Just wanted to start some conversation about one of my other passions, motorcycles. I’m wondering who among you rides on what type of bike and what kind of riding. I’ve got an older BMW GS model (on road/off road) and really like the adventure touring stuff. I manage to get in at least one long trip ( a week or more) per year. I’ve ridden all over the western US, western Canada and into Mexico a few times. I usually take all of my camping gear with me but also stay in hotels about once every 3 or 4 days. By then I need a shower and a real bed. Now that I’ve started to ride uni and am pretty well addicted to it I’m trying to figure out how to strap my 24" Muni on my motorcycle. I go to some really incredible places that would be great for riding.

So, any of you ride motorcycles too? And, if so, have you figured out a way to take your uni with you?

I have a Suzuki gz250, I like it, gets me to work and back, i’ll be able to ride it more when I get my lisence and can ride at night.

I’ve been thinking about how to strap my uni on too. I have this web strap kinda thing that has 6 hooks I put my uniforms on from work and my lunch box. I think if I took the seat off the unicycle and used the strap it would work, i’d put something between it and the seat though, cause it’ll probably leave marks.

How do you get your cycle, on your cycle? intresting question, hehe.

Andrew

I ride off-road. My bike is a '92 Suzuki RMX250. I try to get out riding as many weekends as I can. I usually head up into the mountains, riding out in the prairies isn’t great unless it’s on a track or in a river valley. Since I have to haul my bike with a truck, taking my uni with me is not really a problem.

I’ve ridden motorbikes out on farms, etc which is always good fun. I’m actually currently saving up for getting first my bike license, then a Postie bike.

For those of you who haven’t heard the term, a postie bike is a Honda CT90 or CT110 (the bikes the postmen use here in Australia). Should be about $250 for the license and $1000 for the bike.

I can’t wait to get it.

Andrew

I’ve got an ATK 406 dirt bike that I used to race, and rarely ride now

The contractor I paid to replace six windows has apparently closed his business while I was on vacation, purchased a Harley Davidson and is on his way to California. I guess he rides a motorocycle. I don’t like motorcycles.

Did he replace the windows? By the way Kerry rides a Harley.

Cool topic!

Andrew, that bike looks rather cool. Pratical! How old do you have to be to ride a bike in Oz?

Also, what was that about not riding at night, which kj 52 was on about.

He in the Uk, you can ride 50cc when you are 16 (but they suck) or a 125cc when you are 17. After 2 years, you can ride what you like.

I am really into Scooters. Not twist and gos, but proper scotters, such as Vespas and Lammies. I am getting a Vespa PX125 next march. i so cant wait! Im counting down the days. I’ve wanted one for like 2years.

off topic After that,I plan to get a V-Dab Bay window, and eventually a Splitscreen.

Joe,

50 cc have become really popular in the states i see tons of people riding them even people that look like there in there 30’s haha. the bike looks so small. I think alot of people modify them too.
Also i think kj52 is reffereing that he only has his motorcycle permit? i dunno though

Harleys are for posers. When you see someone riding a Harley, you can’t tell if they’re a doctor, a lawyer, a business owner, or just the classic dirtbag biker they’re pretending to be for the afternoon.

I used to work for a motorcycle school, and taught hundreds of people to ride. We used 200 and 250cc Hondas and Kawasakis, which were easy to work with (and pick up) and very forgiving. Plus you could fit three of them in the back of our old Chevy van when you needed to.

I never owned my own bike, just got licensed and learned the teaching process as part of my job at the driving school. Motorcycles are very fun to ride, but when you’re on one you are much more vulnerable than you are in a car. Your biggest danger on a motorcycle on the street is not being seen by cars.

Last time I rode one: I think was May 1999 in Maui. We rented a Harley for the day and I rode around the island with Jacquie on the back. Very fun!

I also rode a dirt bike up a volcano-damaged river in the Philippines that year. That was 100 times better than riding with cars. I’d love to do it again.

He did not. The police have filed a desk report but will not for the amount of money involved file criminal charges. Since it is unlikely that I’ll ever see him again a civil process will probably produce no results, but I’m going to file them anyway.

I never said I liked Kerry, just that I’m voting for him. I have only once or twice ever had the opportunity to vote for a candidate I really liked; they were neither democrats nor republicans. Not voting, something at least we probably agree on, is not an option.

Yeah, 50cc’s are really annoying. They make a dreadful sound, and go so slow. they are limited to 30mph (50kmh i think). Against a wind they crawl.

Many people de-restrict them, enabling them to go faster, and also kit them (bigger engine) and a tuned exhaust, although most of the cheap ones are ‘Sports exhausts’ which dont do too much to the proformance of the scooter, but makes it sound 10 times worst!

btw, I would class myself as a bit of a Mod, when I’m not unicycling. Parka, Vespa with chrome bits - mirrors (:D) The Who and the Jam :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry for thread jacking…

Joe,

Just to continue the “off topic” thing for a bit, I’m assuming you’re talking about a VW bus here? I think they’re very cool (I think Vespas are very cool too). I’m a long time VW freak. I’ve owned 8 or 9 of 'em including beetles, buses and ghias.

BTW, I also agree w/ johnfoss about the Harley guys being mostly posers.

Yeah, posties are great little things. You spend about $4 a week on petrol (which is really all I can afford at the moment) and they have so much more character thasn most scooters. Chances are I’ll get a 110cc one as the 90cc ones are really old. Posties also sound much more like bikes and less like scooters. I had a friend who used to do the odd bit of dirt jumping on his.

Another friend of mine has been modifying his postie. It can now go about 100km/hr instead of the usual 80 at best. I think he’s about to bore out the cylinders to get a little bit more ‘cc’ in there.

I’m actually not sure what age you have to be to get your bike license. I know you can ride a scooter anywhere with your car license, which you can get at the age of 17. I got my bike learners license along with my car license without studying for it at all…there are 5 common sence questions. That means I can ride on a bike in traffic on my own as long as I’m near somebody with their Open license. You get your Open license after three years with your P plates (what I’ve got now). Thankfully in Queensland you don’t have to display your P plates on your car like in New South Wales.

Andrew

underdog, yeah, sorry about that spelling mistake - ‘V-Dabs’. lol
Cool. It seems like quite a few unicyclists have a VW thing going on.
Roger at Unicycle.Uk.Com has a buggy and a Bay, Derek at my club has a Buggy, Steve C has a Bay, as does Ben (thinkuniking).

I’ve seen loads of Dubs with week. They are becoming much more popular up here (in the North East England).

I’m learning to surf (soon) so a board would look right at home on the top of my Dub :stuck_out_tongue:
I’ve loved V-dubs and Vespas for ages. I guess bout 4 years (ages for me!). I cant wait to get behind the handle bars/wheel of one, but time seems to be going so slow before I can! The time will come though - eventually!

Do you still have any of them, underdog? If so - pics???

Andrew, your mate did dirt jumping on a postie? haha! Crazy!
I think i’ll be putting on a larger kit for my Vespa when I get it. I’ll see how it goes, and if I really need it. It would invaldate the warrenty!

‘Rogers Toy’ :stuck_out_tongue:

Wodger, your wheelbase looks longer than dereks. Is it just my eyes/the pic, or is it?

I love those seats :stuck_out_tongue:

I want a buggy now… :stuck_out_tongue:

Joe,

It is the angle, they are very close and I can not remember which is which. Mine I think is - Beetle -16inch and Dereks is -15inch or it is the other way around.

Hey this is an old thread, but I have something new to add : )

I’ve been riding on the road for some time now, but i’ve just recently had my first 2 of 4 sessions for the course to get your license. The first was reading from a book and answering questions, lots of information, for the most part usefull, and I met some new people. Today we had the range training, they’d give us a skill, show it to us, then we did it. I think the highest we got was second gear, but not everyone had ridden before so we all did it from the beginning. They provided bikes, I got the only dirt bike, cause i’m taller than most, and as first I was kinda bumbed, but it wasn’t a big difference, plus I think I did ok. Theres a husband and wife taking the course and they’re son, they look like a biker family, and also I met a Mother and son that were together, surprisingly today there were 7 ladies and 4 men I think, which on the road I don’t see a lot of women riding, but everyone did a good job and picked up well. We did have two falls I think, one I saw, and they were both ok, and we all got to see a real life lesson. Something you don’t try, although they joked about that being one of the things we’d practice.

Anyway, looking forward to the next two and getting my lisence to have the freedom to ride at night and not have to get home early, woo hoo!

Andrew

Hi, this is my first post. I have two Honda XR 650’s and a CRF 450, that I race off-road (Desert, Hare Scrambles, Enduro’s and some MX). The unicycle is actually really new to me (about 5 days ago). So far I can only ride about 2 minutes before my legs give out. I would always see the unicyclists and think how cool it would be to be able to ride around on one wheel. I think this has been the hardest physical thing I have ever learned in my life. Anyway, yes I am very passionate about motorcycling and racing and I could see how unicycling could be very addictive also.
