What Was Your Worst Unicycling Injury?

Maybe not my worst, but about 10 minutes ago, I UPDed off my 29er on a ride, (First UPD of the uni) and my fingernail got a really annoying cut beneath it and the nail ripped a bit too. I actually have not had very many UPDs or injuries from a uni in my almost 3 years of riding, except when I fell off my giraffe and my foot hurt a lot for over a week.

and you’ve only had ur 29er for 1 week? The are many UPDs to come :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve only had it for 3 days.

It’s incredible what all can fit into one shoulder

How are you?

Thanks, I’m doing well, just a bit groggy from the surgery, as it was a major procedure. Normally, the screws are removed on an outpatient basis, and you’re back home the same evening. They wanted me to stay for two days. Well, it should heal relatively quickly. I’ll reopen my shop on February 1st. The next thing to deal with is my right knee, which hasn’t been good since last September. I’m eager to be able to ride my unicycle again, especially since a lot of great new equipment is coming out in March (my Fatty series). Of course, I want to ride and test it myself. I really don’t want to have another operation this year.

That all looks so much more ā€˜industrial’ when you see all the parts on a table top compared to on the x-ray. I just counted all the screws against the x-ray to make sure they were all there

Yeah, the screws look a bit like something from AliExpress  One screw got stuck, so I had to remove the head and drill it out. A bike mechanic would do the same. Hmm, the question is, how do I use these parts? I could make a mini shoehorn out of the plate, or a ladle for mixing soups and sauces :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I was wondering whether you could use them on a uni somehow - part of a bar setup or a very long brake lever extension?

It looks pretty frightening really – some of them look a bit like ring-shank nails rather than screws. Anyhow, it might look industrial but at least they gave you anaesthetic and did just get you to bite on a piece of stick

Speaking of which, you could screw the plate onto the end of a long stick and make a nifty back scratcher, that would mean. you don’t have to stress your shoulder too much if you have an itchy back – it keeps helping your shoulder even after it is removed!

Yeah, you made my day!
Exactly, I’ve always wanted a good back scratcher. My girlfriend refuses. I’d love a model like the ones cows have, but it would be too big to fit in the apartment. And if my neighbors hear that whirring and all the ā€œaaahhā€ and ā€œoooohhhā€ sounds, they might get the wrong idea. This thing could be a brilliant alternative.

I hope. For me, it never got better again to this day. I broke my colarbone in 2019 and in 2023 the same site again. Something hurts every day.

It feels good so far. I’ve already stopped taking the painkillers. So I can tick that off my to-do list. The next item on the list is my right knee; it will probably require a knee replacement. I’ll discuss it with an orthopedist in February.

I wish it were the same for me…..

Wow, thatā€˜s quite a metal collection, there! Looks like you got yourself an elegant, lightweight tyre lever. Although I donā€˜t know the exact costs, my gut feeling is you overpaid badly :money_mouth_face:
Glad to read that the shoulderā€˜s doing rather well. A shame that the knee makes such problems, though!

Yess ! Tire lever. That’s it. So it all comes full circle with my sport  I’ll have to try out soon whether the plate works as a tire lever.
Unfortunately, I’ve now developed further health problems that even my doctor finds baffling. It had been getting progressively worse over the past year and then became acute around December: my whole body aches, muscles and joints. In the mornings, I’m sometimes so stiff that I can barely get out of bed and need help getting dressed. Painkillers then improve my mobility. I’m waiting for an appointment with a rheumatologist. I have a slight suspicion: an intolerance to titanium. It’s very rare, but the symptoms match perfectly. But these symptoms should be disappearing soon. Right now, it’s really bad, and I can hardly process my few online orders because even unrolling tape over a box is a huge effort.

So sorry to read that! Hope itā€˜s really an allergy, and the pain will disappear soon, now that the stuff is out of your body.

I don’t think either idling or ultimate wheel puts unnatural or excessive stress on the knee (compare to say cross riding in freestyle that is really not healthy). Both movements are in the plane of the joint.

Obviously, overdoing it or overtraining is always a risk. And as UW requires lots of strength and tendons/ligaments take longer to strengthen than musle, be cautious when starting not to overdue it.

On that note: I need to try UW again some time, as my drag seat is now really solid now, but it unfortunately doesn’t transfer directly to UW (decent a few years ago but tried a few months ago and I could only do 3-4 revs).

I imagine drag-seat is more difficult, because your feet are further apart, because of the cranks. I haven’t ridden my 36" UW in a few months now, because I got a stinging pain in my left knee and well the weather hasn’t been all that good, but I am quite confident with a few tries, I will be able to free-mount and ride say 30 metres. When I close my eyes, I can still feel the movement of the wheel.
But then yes I had been overdoing it, because it feels powerful being able to ride such a wheel. Quite addicting.
