What did the top muni riders ride at Unicon?

That’s a question I (and I guess some others too) find really intriguing. So why not gather some facts? I created a list using the official results from the Unicon webpage including the top riders for all muni disciplines except standard DH. The ranking is just by time/points (age group, m/f doesn’t matter). I added the munis which I think were used, but lots are still missing.

Muni Downhill (Expert)

1 Rulf, Jakub: QX 24x3, rim brake
2 Sternad, Žiga: KH 24x3 Schlumpf, rim brake

5 Lavis, Mark: Custom 26x2.4 Schlumpf (QX/KH parts), rim brake, 137mm cranks

Muni Uphill

1 Charrier, Martin: ?
2 Lavis, Mark: Custom 26x2.4 Schlumpf (QX/KH parts), rim brake, 137mm cranks

4 Sternad, Žiga: KH 24x3 Schlumpf, rim brake
5 Flansberry, Jacob: ?

Muni Obstacles

1 Flansberry, Jacob: ?
2 Potier, Nicolas: ?
3 Rytter, Oskar: ?
3 Sturny, Pierre: ?
3 Eichholz, Lutz: KH I guess?

It would be great if some of these riders or anyone else could help to complete the list. Just full quote the list and add some munis. Feel free to correct anything I’ve written so far.

Thanks!

Small update. Great to have the DH and Cross lists almost finished!

Looks like Martin rode the same 26" ungeared in the uphill as he did in the XC:

Oh, and Beau Hoover rode a 24x3 ungeared (yellow) MUni.

No that’s his 24, for XC he was riding Romain’s (from CDK / Woom) 26

Jacob was riding a geared KH’24 in the XC, and an ungeared KH’24 that we shared in the obstacle course. I can’t remember if he had fixed his brake at the time of the XC, but if so, it was rim brake.

Sooo…

If it’s any help, you can be pretty sure that anyone in the top 5 of any Downhill category was running (and using) a brake.

I was not. My quads still haven’t forgiven me.

In fact, I would be entertained to know how the brakeless riders did, in both versions of the race. Certainly those were courses that were very brake-intensive; something I should have considered ahead of time… :stuck_out_tongue:

I finished in 27:52 in the non-expert downhill (they wouldn’t let me switch to expert) without a brake (24x3 MUni). That was good for 8th in the 30+ age group. The result formats suck, so I can’t easily see how that compares in the overall, and of course I can’t see who was using a brake or not.

they should have it by age and then have a sub category of breaks or break less.

Didn’t he use Romain’s KH26 disc?

yes you’re right, for cross country, he uses Romain’s 26 with disc and not rim brake

Yeah, the results format could be better, like one overall list and then the different age groups.

For completeness, it’s a KH. (Powdercoated by Darren Bedford).

Cool idea for a thread. I just got back to Oz from Europe so I can add to the list a little bit. I know Seisuke Kobayashi was riding a custom 26" disc brake muni with 150s, and what looked like a UST (tubeless) compatible rim/ tyre. Ken Looi’s geared muni had 150mm cranks and a lightweight 2.2" tyre. I was one of the only riders in the top handful of people who competed with the exact same setup for all the muni events- and to be honest, i think apart from the muni obstacles comp (which lots of people treated like another trials comp and rode smaller wheels for it which was kinda cheating) i don’t think my results suffered from it. It is nice to only have to take one uni and be able to compete at a high level in all the Muni events.
