Holy wow:
I think this deserves a Bump. However is the clip faked?
I couldn’t care less if it was fake, definetely funny/awesome.
It is beleiveable though because alot of whale scientists get in small dingeys and kayaks to get really close to whales.
plus the whale may not have landed on him just infront of the camera so he just went under with whales splash.
That’s very possible, and the whales mass could have created a small whirlpool, like when a boat sinks, and sucks you under. Also the kayaker could have just been so shocked he/she would say it hit him/her.
stupid lieing kayakers
Hey, one of our (once was) avid forum members was a Kayaker, and a cool guy too!
Yeah i dont think the whale “landed” on the kayaker, but in front and so the kayaker was sort of sucked down. If he was landed on…he would not of come back up. Either way, the clip is quite amazing.
I was almost half expecting to not see the kayaker come up at all… or just the kayak and not the kayaker.
I was hoping that the whale ate the kayaker and then spit him out. That whale wasnt trained to do that which i am so DISSAPOINTED
Usually wild animals aren’t trained…
You could poke your eye out with one of those things.
Thought you would pop in to reply to this thread.
Where has the ol’ kayaker been over this period of time???
I’ve been on bed rest after having a freakin’ killer whale fall on my head! … just kidding.
I’ve been lurking mostly while I’ve been engaging in other activities, and working double shifts. But I’m back in gear getting ready for MoabMUniFest.
Sweet, I will be glad to see you there.
At least it was only a killer whale and not a landslide.
Check out the video here. That happened on a river here in Washington recently.
Re: whale jumps on kayaker
I finally watched this from my girlfriend’s computer, with high speed cable modem so I could see it clearly.
I don’t think it’s faked. And I do think the killer whale did indeed land on him. Those sea kayaks are extremly high volume, compared to whitewater boats. Meaning it takes alot of water pressure to overcome their boyancy to get them completely underwater. If the whale had landed next to it it still may have gone under, but only for less than a second. But it stayed down awhile, so it must have been held under by the whale’s body until one end or the other slipped out and it shot back to the surface like a torpedo, as we saw. The most impressive part of the video, (from a kayaker’s perspective), is that the kayaker go his roll after all of that, meaning that he was able to roll back upright from the upside-down position once he was back on the surface of the water. I wonder if he kept paddling to finish the race.
Dang! That was cool.
Unless you were that one guy.
It definitely looks like the whale came up in front of the kayak, and either clipped it on the way down, or just landed close enough to suck the kayak down with it. Depending what the whale did after splashing down, it could have held the kayak down for the several seconds it was under. Of course Ed knows more about these things than I. Yes, it’s great that the guy (girl?) was able to roll back up after such an experience!
So if that was a race, what was the whale thinking? Was it trying to make a statement, was it saying “Hey! Check me out!” or was it just saying “Wheeee!”
Reminds me of why I try not to kayak around anything that’s bigger than my kayak…
pffft, speak for yourself, I for one would love to get slammed by a killer whale while kayaking in the ocean!! Think of the storytelling opportunities…
