A Monty Eagles Claw trials tyre will give you more bounce than the Maxxis
Exactly, different tires uses different pressures. I used to ride my Monty Eagle Claw around 35psi, last week I pumped it to 45psi, it’s actually amazing! Everytire is different, you’ll get used to them and you’ll like a few and hate a few others. Mess around with the tire pressure and you’ll find what’s the best for you.
I run 50in a mec and 55ish in a creepy crawler if that helps any
Good for you! Funny thing is your about as good at hopping as me I think.
- 1 . He’s doing good high hops in the video. As he bounces up, if he bends his legs and pulls his saddle up he can get the wheel an extra six inches. Arguably that would be called a jump.
Enough to keep your rim from touching the ground. If you can feel your rim hitting the ground on those hops, you definitely need more air.
The correct amount depends on several variables, so there’s not a given number that works for everybody. Just experiment with various pressures and see what you get. A hard tire gives you more bounce, but only if you can compress it enough. Basically I’d stick with the rim-off-the-ground rule until you figure out more specifics that work for you. Note the necessary tire pressure will change if you get a different tire, different unicycle, etc.
Also consider the tempurature and humidity where you are riding. Last week it was in the low 90’s here in Seattle (rare) and my tire was super bouncy. In the winter it feels rock hard.
I’ve maxed out at about 10"… things like:
seem inhuman. I see people do it and still don’t “get” it. I’m not looking to hop up to the top of a parked car or anything but I do think upping my hop height to 18" is a reasonable goal.
So the extra pressure helps? I doubt I’d get any compression at 50psi, that and I don’t think I’ve ridden north of 25psi in a very long time. Something to experiment with I guess.
Don’t forget that knox might weigh more than you.
You’ll get used to higher pressures over time (although too much is always too much) but if you don’t hit your rim and can hop conveniently it’s probably fine to leave it as is, I suppose.
hopping trainer
Hey guys,
I know this post is a little bit old but I have been struggling with the same issue. I can hop around with little bitty hops until I get tired. So I decided to try something different. I think someone may have talked about this but I am amazed by the changes I have seen in one day.
I built a small platform with 2X4" laying flat and a piece of 3/4" plywood(1-1/4" X12’w overall). and then I built one with the 2X4" on end (4-1/4" 24" X 42"). I painted them bright blue for contrast with the background concrete.
I am finding that actually having a target is really helping to get my wheel off the ground. I have been able to hop all four aspects of the higher one and considering tearing down the lower one. before this I was hopping around in circles with 1-2" height and am finding that now I am easily getting 6-8" with higher hops interspersed when I hit the zone.
The biggest issue seems to be the fear factor,so build the platform large enough to give yourself a UPD comfort zone. I hope this helps somebody, let me know if it does.
Going back outside to play might try my stairs(3 set) if I get cocky.
I found that I never could actually hop much at all until building a small platform to aim for similar to yours. I’m not sure why but I was sure glad it worked.
