Unicycling down Snowdon in aid of Breast cancer

You can’t prove nuffin’, guv’nor…

Phil

I’m interested in going if it’s not too late, I could probably get there by train.

I walked up Snowdon last year and kept thinking how fun it would be on a unicycle.

Might be able to make this one. Depends on logistical considerations and wether my project has given me my life back by then.

Anybody heard back from Carl yet about the plans?.. or is it just me - I seem to be invisible at the moment

I haven’t actually gotten around to emailling him yet… :-/

Would anyone else be interested in making a weekend of it, and staying somewhere overnight on Saturday? It seems a long way to go just for one ride…

Phil

I think Carl is still trying to decide which way to go up & down. And find out about places to stay and such.

Cathy

I still haven’t heard anything, he’ll probably e-mail everyone as a group once he’s made some decisions on route and stuff.

I think the general plan for my riding group was to go via Stokeplaza again (like we did at Christmas), and then maybe try riding the new forest park on the way back, Coed Llandegla.

Loose.

Is it definitely Sunday 9th or is it likely to change to Saturday or something? I need to book a train ticket to get up there, presumably for Saturday evening - probably too late to get a cheap fare now anyway. And I’ll need to book Monday off work if it’s on Sunday. It’s all a bit vague and I’m starting to wonder whether to bother. “It’ll be the same as last time” doesn’t really help for those of us who weren’t on that trip. And are we expected to raise money, or make a donation, or wear advertising - how does the charity side of it work?

Oh - sorry if I sound a bit pissed off - haven’t had much sleep recently :o

Rob

This is all I have from Carl (email 1)

Hello there. Thanx for the mail. I will keep up in date with wants going on.
Im still making plans, but the event is becoming bigger than I first thought. The plan so far is that on the 9th of April we are going. But I would like to meet up at the bottem of Snowdon at about 10 o’clock (In the car park across the road from the train station) And hoping to reach the top by about 12.30.

I am riding down snowdon for cancer research and trying to raise £500. If you would like I can send you a fundraising form.

Also in the next week I am going to contact the local paper and hopfully the news to try and get publiserty.

Thanx again.

Hello again. Just updating you on the Snowdon trip. Well because of the big response on the trip down Snowdon I have to make some new arrangments. When I first made plans there was only going to be two unicyclists going down and a hand full of people waking up with us. Now there seems to be a lot more people interested in coming. About 30 people want to take part in or come to watch the event.

I am going to contact the press some time this week to get some Publicity on the event and I am hoping this will help rise more money. I would also like to ask if I can send you a form so you can help rise some money for cancer reseach as well. If you can send me your address and phone number this would be help full.

I am going to keep the date that we ride on the 9th of aprill. Where we will meet up and start from I am still planing, but I think that the Llanberis Train Station is a good place to meet up. There is also a big car park across the road from the train station. We will be riding down the Llanberis track down snowdon.

As now that there are more people coming I am hoping to rise £1000 instead of £500.

I hope that this has help you but just E-mail me if you have any other Questions.

Before I go I should tell you a little about my self. I have been riding unicycles for 6 years and I am a very keen Trails and Muni rider. I live in Llandudno north wales and ride in the snowdon area often. The Reason for the Snowdon trip is I have alway wanted to Attempted it on a unicycle and since I am going to do it I tought that it would make a good charity event. I also chose cancer reseach for the charity because one of my close Relatives passed away last year of cancer.

Thank you for your support.

Thats all iv got from carl aswell. I dont know wheather or not to go now, because its not been organised very well. I still need to find transport up there.
Ride on!

What more do you want?

He’s told you what day the trip is - April 9th.
Where - that everyone is meeting up at the Llanberis train station, that he’s going up Snowdon and down the Llanberis track.
When - Meeting at 10 and hope to be at the top of Snowdon by 12.30.
Why - he wants to. Also a relative passed away from breast cancer and he wants to raise £500 or £1000 for breast cancer research.
He did not expect so many people to want to do it too but that is really great if they do, especially if they send their names and addresses to him so that he can send you a sponsor form for you to get sponsors.
It was not originally intended to be a big event so there wasn’t accomodation etc arranged. Is it too difficult to arrange your own?

(you sound like you expect Carl to arrange the transport for you aswell)

What other details do you want and I will try to get them if you can’t.

Thanks.

Cathy

People just underestimate 'Jaro and don’t stick to the basics. It’s become a bit of a ‘thing’ to go up there now and a lot of South African companies have done it as a form of Corporate Team Building. This has further entrenched the perception that it’s little more than an extended hike and people have done some silly stuff.

Due to some possible changes at work, I may pretty soon find myself involved with an ‘outdoorsy’ station. A permanent link to Kilimanjaro Base Camp is being mentioned as a possibility as well.
I can’t imagine it to be too much of a hassle to talk myself into a chance to trundle up the hill and bolt down it on a uni of sorts. I’ll have to acquire a uni capable of doing such things, not to mention the commensurate skills, but it’s may become a real possibility.

I emailed him my name and address for a sponser form, and i havent heard anything. I will try and arrange transport but its getting quite late now so i dont know if i will be able to make it. Its a shame because i would love to meet all the other unicyclists and help carl out.
Thanks
Edd

Getting there…

Hi all, I’d definitely like to do this Snowdon ride. My main problem is the cost of getting there. I should be able to get insured on my parents car and drive from the East Midlands early on the Sunday morning.
My point is that it would be cheaper if I could get a couple of other uni’ers to share the petrol costs with me it’d make things easier. So if you live anywhere between Rutland and Snowdon, or can get to a train station along the way, I’ll probably be able to take a couple of people.
If anyone’s interested, please email me at matt_tolliday@yahoo.com
Cheers,
Matt

Thanks, that’s what I wanted to know. I certainly don’t expect Carl to organise everything (or anything really) - but where and when to meet is quite important
I didn’t intend to sound like I was having a go a Carl, just don’t want to waste time and money getting up there unless I know what’s going on.
I’ll arrange some transport - should see you all there.

Rob

I’m definitely up for going now, provided I can sort out all the details of getting there etc. I’ve got a few questions that I need to ask you guys about the trip.

Firstly, those of you who are going by train, are you going to Bangor? And if you are how are you going to get to Llanberis?

People who are staying over on Saturday night, where are you staying? Last time I went we stayed in a youth hostel, but we needed a car to get there so that probably won’t be an option this time. Are there campsites in Llanberis?

People who want to ride on Saturday too, where do you think you will be riding? (and can I come? ). I reckon it’s too far to go just for one ride too!
I know that the Marin Trail in Betws-y-coed is nearby, don’t know how extreme it is though.

As far as the route is concerned, I think it would be best to travel up to
Pen-y-pass and take the Miner’s Track to the summit (like Loosemoose suggested). I think this would be best because than quite a lot of the way up would be rideable too, and also starting from Pen-y-pass would mean there would be less walking up!

One more thing, would I be stupid to attempt it on a 24" with 140mm cranks? Or should I invest in some 170s?

Yes, Probably ride (it’s only about 10 miles), or scrounge a lift if there’s somebody feeling generous.

I was planning on staying in Bangor, either in the youth hostel or in a B&B. I could bring a tent but I was planning on travelling extremely light so I can ride from Bangor to Llanberis - I’ve got a pretty small tent I use for cycling trips so I could possibly camp if somebody knows a suitable site.

Sounds good, but I think I’ll be spending most of Saturday getting there (it’s a 7 1/2 hour trip from Plymouth, and I’ve got to get to Plymouth first…)

I can’t comment on that - I’ve only ever been up Snowdon once and I went up the Watkin path from the south - the shortest route I think, we were up and down in under four hours.

I’ll be using my 26" with 152s, so neither of us will have trouble with cold knees  Apparently some of the other wooses are using brakes or something… Seriously though, I don’t think it’s worth buying a set of longer cranks for one trip, if you’re used to the 140s.

Rob

There’s nothing that wasn’t rideable on 26" with 150s. I guess 140s on a 24" would be okay. It’s not incredibly difficult, just a long long descent.

I’m kind of considering going there for the weekend, only hassle is that I won’t know if I’m free till right near the time, cos it depends on whether Penny has got some work stuff done, in which case I’ll go walking instead. It’s only 4 and a half hours from me to Bangor on the train. I’m a lazy student so I’d be up for extra riding on the Saturday and maybe the Monday if I don’t have stuff to do. It’d be fun to do some ‘natural’ riding in the area rather than another one of the signposted singletrack places.

I have just got myself a very dangerous hammock as part of my super-lightweight unicycle sleeping gear (570g in total for everything I need for a nights sleep and tiny) that I need to try out, so if I’m going I’ll probably be staying between two trees somewhere.

I’d say he’s organising it just right, all events should be organised with nothing more than a meetup place, or a campsite if everyone is staying over, anything more is too much hassle to organise and you’re guaranteed to annoy someone by doing something the way they don’t want it done.

Joe
