Excellent! I have a silly idea for silly ways of wild camping, and before I get time to try them out, Joe beats me to it! This way I get to judge the stupidity of my idea based on someone elses hypothermia/dampness/level of strangulation. Nice. I presume you won’t be taking one of these wimpy bivi bag things then?
Blizzard survival bag bivi bag and sleeping bag in one. I wouldn’t describe it as comfy, but it’s very very light, seems durable, and I didn’t die of hypothermia when I bivvied out with it normally. Am hoping the combination with a hammock will be more comfy.
By the way John, Anchor Supplies over past the station have hammocks, yours for about £6 or £7 it was. You should go there anyway, it’s an amazing shop.
Hmmm it didn’t occur to me that it was rideable, I did find a bus timetable that says there are buses from Bangor to Llangenith, I’ll probably decide when I get there, depending on how energetic I feel after a long train journey.
Cheers for the advice, I think I will test my cranks on some big long hills before I make up my mind whether to get 170s, I don’t think I’m as good as you guys and I don’t want to end up having to walk down.
I was thinking of travelling light too, but sleeping in a hammock is a bit extreme! If you hung it from lamp-posts in the car park where everyone is meeting you could have a nice long lie-in on Sunday morning:D
I found a couple of B&Bs in Llangenith that seem pretty cheap, think I’ll probably go for one of these.
I also found out that there’s a bus that goes from Llangenith to Pen-y-pass on Sunday mornings at 10.15, so if Carl does want to take that route it would be pretty easy to get there, as long as they let unicycles on the bus.
hey guys!
Unfortunaly, due to lack of money and a way to get to wales, i wont be able to make it. I was really looking forward to this ride and meeting other unicyclists. If there is another ride like this in future i will make sure i have enough money and arrange a lift way beforehand. Anyway, have fun guys, See you at BUC?
Ride on!
Edd
Is anybody planning on going for a ride on the Saturday afternoon? I’m discussing with Liam (Domesticated Ape) whether it’s worth me making a really early start to get there at 2pm ish or whether to leave at a more civilised time and be there around 3pm…
I could make the earlier train at a push, but the one arriving at 3pm would be much easier for me.
I’m interested in going there for the whole weekend, although I haven’t done anything about it yet… where are you staying? Mind if I join you?
I can help with transport from anywhere between Worcester-ish and Snowdon if that’s of any help (sorry if you’ve booked any tickets already, I should have gotten off my lazy rear sooner). Would that help with arriving at a more civilised time of day? Still, even if we don’t start until late we could always go for a night ride up Snowdon…
We were planning in staying in a B&B in Llangenith - Liam is looking into it and will let me know when he’s picked one. We were both going on the train and meeting up at Crewe or Bangor. I was planning in riding from Bangor to Llangenith (about 10 miles).
I haven’t booked my ticket yet - trying to decide whether to go for the really early train. A lift from Worcester would be very cool if it’s on offer - I’ll be travelling pretty light and can drive some of the way if it helps (but my insurance is only 3rd party in somebody else’s car). What time would you need me to be at Worcester? I can get there at 11:17 if I leave Plymouth at 7:35. It isn’t actually that much cheaper than going all the way to Bangor (certainly if I pay for some of your petrol), but if it means I can get there earlier without leaving quite so early it would be very nice.
Have fun guys. I’d love to be coming with you. Or at least cheering you on. But I’m in Amsterdam that weekend. (That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Snowdon’s such a high mountain).
I’ve just taken a look at the map and it appears that there are 3 bridleways off snowdon. Firstly, the obvious, Llanberis path. Secondly, the Snowdon Ranger, and thirdly, the Rhyd Ddu path. If we were keen, we could do all in the two days.

This is Joe we’re talking about, he’ll be suggesting we do laps of the blummin’ mountain.
I reckon two in a day is doable as long as you’re not going to try to ride up any of it, and you manage to avoid any face / rock incidents.
Rob… I’m about fifteen minutes from Worcester so I’m easy as to what time you want to get there for. The offer is open to anyone else coming this way (Worcester -> Shrewsbury -> Llanberis) who wants a lift…
Oi oi, I’m in training don’t ya know! I believe you and Phil are too!
It’d be a little bit hardcore I admit. Three climbs. Done as planned below, it’s one 1085m climb plus two 900m climbs plus 400m of climbing riding over to Llanberis. At the bottom of each descent, you get a tea room, a pub (which does food), and a town full of cafes, it’s too perfect to be true.
I’m thinking a start from Bangor Friday night, because it’s sea level and no-ones ridden snowdon from sea level before. So it’d go - Ride from Bangor Friday night to the bottom of Snowdon Ranger, where there’s a forest, I’m intending to pitch up in there somewhere. Up Snowdon Ranger, down Rhyd Ddu, looking out for how good the Snowdon Ranger descent is. Tea room stop here. Assuming the descent looks worth it, back up Rhyd Ddu and down S.R, or if not, just go to the pub (the two paths come out about 1k apart). Then to pub. Then pitch up again. Ride over to Llanberis early on the Sunday morning, or drive if anyone has a car and needs it there, and head up the hill with the group. Car based people could park in Rhyd Ddu and it’d all work out.
I’ve done a day with as much climbing as the saturday planned once, in the Cairngorms, and it was hard, but I was still riding in the mountains the next day. That had a longer ride in and out too, was about 10 miles before I started the ascent proper.
Phil - if there’s still a space in your car, a lift to Worcester on the sunday would be wicked. Assuming you’re heading up on the Saturday, I’ll do the train thing on the Friday. But like I said before, I still dunno whether I can make it for sure, so let someone else bag it if not.
I’ve just had a look and I’m the first person to mention riding Snowdon on rec.sport.unicycling, I did it October 2001. Does anyone know anyone who did it prior to that? I believe I also took the first group ride up, in 2002. It’d be cool to also be the first to do it from sea level, and to do the other two paths.
