Unicycle vs bicycle, 1 wheel vs 2 wheels

lol how many unis you got? maybe take a pic of them lined up

My uni-family

The big green is my Qu-Ax muni with magura brake. In the middle is the geared uni with a ratio of 1:2.5. That isn“t mine but noone besides me can ride it in Hamburg. The one with the green wheel is my Qu-Ax freestyle. The silver one is my first discounter unicycle. I leaned unicycling on it. The blue one is my standard KH 07 trial:) I think I have to make an update after my birthday on friday

well its a vague memory but when I was 4 or so I saw one for the first time and I’ve been in love ever since. Unfortunately it was only last year that I was able to get one of my own… my parents thought it would be a waste of money lol.

I’m totally a roadie who likes the occasional break for some good old mountain uni, but I can’t take things that are TOO technical. Got into uni for the challenge of it, and then didn’t really ride much because my 24" was boring me without many trails for it… then I realized you could actually go fast with a big wheel and a gear and have since become completely hooked on my 36.

My verdict on 1 vs. 2… 2 is faster, but 1 is more fun.

i how did

i got started because my aunt got me one and i could not ride it but now im at skateparks grinding the hell out of rails and 180 unispins dropping in half pipes and stuff.

IĀ“m 48 and I start riding uni in march of 2008 after buying a very cheap uni, so cheap that I thought that if I could not ride it that was not a big lost… But, I learned myself and it was the most fantastic sensation since the day of starting riding a bike.

I start because I saw the KH videos… Amazing. I thought that was a fake the first time I saw it… When I realize that was true I want to do It… (not yet…)

In the pass I used to ride MTB a lot with friends, and after starting ride Uni I spend all my free time doing Muni and IĀ“m still trying to justify to my bike friends why IĀ“m not riding bike anymore…

ThatĀ“s easy: more exercise; must more fun; less dangerous; always learning new things; more easy to transport and keep and so on…
The speed and the distance are the only big differences that are really bigger on bikes in particular doing off-road.

The big problem is that they only can understand this after starting riding. So, I“m always trying to push them to start learning uni!

Now I own 6 unis (1x16,1x20,2x24,2x29 Muni and Guni) and I“m still thinking to buy more! What a sport!

I used to be that guy. Where did you go to school? It wasn’t me because I stopped doing that in 1995 but it might be someone I know or worked with.

That’s because he has very limited use of one of his legs. Skilewis is an ANIMAL!

Me too on that!

When I got into unicycling there was no MUni, Flat, Trials, or proper Touring. Also there was no KH, Nathan Hoover or Universe videos. I saw a big unicycle group in a parade in 1967 or 68, and always wanted to learn since then. I didn’t get a real chance to try until 1976 though.

For me I first became interested in unis when I was in elementary or middle school. I rented a game at BlockBuster (For SNES!) where you race unis on pipes. I was interested from that point on, so many years later around Thanksgiving, when my parents were out of town, I splurged on a cheap little unicycle and didn’t tell anyone about it until I was able to ride. I kept myself hidden in the garage until I was able to easily span the distance of it. I didnt want anyone to see me learning because I wanted to surprise people, and also because I figured they would try to discourage me or tell me I would never be able to learn it.

Now instead of hiding it, I’m riding in parades!

well, i just wanted to be different, Screw the so-called BMXers (smokers), im a Muni/Trials Unicyclist.

1 vs 2 wheels:

bikes suck. good flatland BMXers i have respect for, because, in truth there only on one wheel a majority of the time

My mom didn’t want me to ride a bike because it was dangerous.

Then again she also doesn’t get how I can lug 2-3 unicycles around when I only have 2 hands.

I had a friend who unicycled and I always thought that was awesome so I told him I intended to unicycle joust him some day. He responded by telling me to go for it and that he knew about the unicycle in my basement. I had no idea what he was talking about but apparently my grandpa had bought a unicycle 10 years before and gave it to my mom hoping that someday me or my brother would learn to ride it. So I cleaned the cobwebs off it and learned to ride it.

This video is what first inspired me…sorry for the poor quality. I saw it several years ago and it wasn’t until recently that my interest gained momentum.

I don’t foresee myself giving up my mountain bike because there are aspects of two wheels that you can’t get from one…and visa versa. To me it’s fascinating to be able to do so much with so little, which is why I don’t own a motor vehicle. I believe that owning a uni and a bicycle enables me to go anywhere and do almost anything without the burden of a car/truck.

On a whim I bought my son a unicycle for Christmas, and he took to it very rapidly. It looked like a lot of fun, so at 49, I decided to learn myself. I’ve been having a blast, and as a long time motorcycle racer (dirt bikes), I’m naturally attracted to off road riding. Unicycling has also provided me with a great form of aerobic exercise that is relatively easy on my knees, which have been damaged from motorcycle racing.

Last summer I was eating dinner at a restaurant with my family in salt lake city Utah and two guys rode by on their unicycles they were just commuting. Ever since then, I’ve been interested in it. Then a kid moved out to my island who knew how to uni. After I saw him, I got one and have been riding it for four months now. I love it because it is different compared to all of the bicyclists in my bicycle community. Also, it has no rusty chain that could fall off, and it is much more enjoyable.

When I got to university I joined the circus society, saw a unicycle lying there and thought ā€œHey, I remember just about being able to do that as a kidā€ 30mins later I was managing a straight line across the room from a supported mount.
Didn’t get much further than that till a couple of weeks ago, I came back home for hols and mum was running a marathon, my sister and mum both run, my dad rides a bike, and I always feel really unfit compared to the rest of them, but none of those activities appeal. We were in Brighton for the marathon and saw Oddballs juggling shop, they had a unicycle and I convinced the parents it would be a great birthday present and came home with a uni. Hoping by the end of the summer to be able to do a full lap round the park (about a mile) and some simple tricks like hopping on and off the pavement.

about 5 years ago i was looking for a new bike on ebay the first thing that camle up was a unicycle, i took this as a sign. it was a fiver so i brought it straight way learned to ride it and upgraded to a 25 quid one started hammering some muni and decided to upgrade again. now i have a 24" muni mental touring 29er and my 2 original ā€œebayersā€
I still havent got a new bike, come to think of it i havent ridden a bike in 2 and a half years. its just eaiser to get the uni out and about in a car ( no need for a rack  ) i even ride it the 20 miles to college most days ( 10 mile there 10 back its up hill all the way the college i go to is ontop of a hill called bulle hill its not a bad climb but i do like riding back down

but i digress
UNi = GOOD
b**e = BAD VERRY VERRY BAD !!!

It’s both, but my left is worse.

Wow! Thanks.

People like me, and the 90 year old who learned are evidance anyone can learn. After learning I’ve ridden way more technical terrain than I thought I ever would  but there are some basic things I still can’t do which is really anoying, like freemounting.

I’ve hardly ridden in a while since I broke one of my braces (see avatar) on a Muni ride :frowning: But I’ve still been on here nearly everyday. That shows the extent of my addiction

The new braces I want require more flexability in my achillies which I’ve been working on pretty hard the past 6 mo. and can for the first time since my injury stand w/ my feet flat right after stretching. In another month or two I hope to be able to do it comfortably w/o stretching. Then I could get new braces and I’ll get back into Muni hard core. Being able to stand w/ flat feet would prob help a lot in finaly learning to freemount.

Riding my mtb to my college daily is helping keep a bit of my fitness, but not nearly as much as my uni. I’m thinking of getting a road bike so I can strap my Muni to it an ride it to the trails instead of driving.

When i was younger my older brother used to ride a unicycle and i got really inspired by watching him ride and i got really inspired by these videos of Dan Heaton.

Noah’s post reminds me that there’s more to why I ride unicycles. I think I left something out of my original post (from 2009, above). Yes, I saw those unicyclists in the parade, but there were other influences. I think the books of Dr. Seuss played a role, among others. I was always fascinated by vehicles of all types, especially unusual ones. What could be more unusual than something that balances on one wheel and actually works!

In 1976, around the same time I was trying to ride the POS Troxel unicycle someon had lent me, I was astounded by a unicyclist in my school talent show. I was in 8th grade and I guess he was only in 9th, but he seemed so much more grown up. He was a member of the Pontiac Unicyclists, and he rode his 5’ giraffe over a jump ramp. I was certain that he was going to die. When he didn’t, I was even more drawn to doing it. That was extreme unicycling for the time period.

Then, 30 years later, why am I still doing it as I approach 50? Part of it is people like George Peck, who encouraged me to get out and ride the dirt some more. Even though I had been promoting the idea before that, seeing his original Rough Terrain Unicycling video always made me want to go out and ride dirt. And I still do today. Other riders, like Dan Heaton and Kris Holm (and many more) provided us with great visual examples of people doing it; examples of what was possible.

Also the fascinating people I’ve met over the years, through my involvement in unicycling. In no order:
The Brichford family
Al and Teresa Hemminger
JeanPaul Jenack
Dr. Claude Shannon
Wally Watts
Jack Halpern
Jean Ascher
Hans Born
Sem Abrahams
The Ruiz family
The King Charles Troupe (generations of riders)
The Hover/Fleming family
Brett Bymaster
My Jacquie (who I never would have met were it not for unicycling)

Those are just a few. How lucky I’ve been to have had unicycling in my life, and meet all those people. :sunglasses:

13 years ago standing outside closed bike shop at Copenhagen Denmark, I saw a chrome unicycle and I was fascinating. Gave up the idea because I believed that it’s impossible… short time after that I bought my first MTB…

7 mounth ago my nephew, got 20" QU-AX for his 13 birthday (Bar Mitzvah), and I had the chance to try it. The next day I bought one for myself, and it was love story.

At the first few weeks I refused to admit that I’m no longer riding my Norco 604 bicycle (denial?) - but now I can proudly say: Muni makes me happier (acceptance?)
