Unicycle recommendation

Hi all, I’m looking to buy a new unicycle and would like a
recommendation.

My current unicycle is the 20" Torker CX which is too small for my
tastes… I would like a bigger wheel so that I could go a little
further and faster with less effort. I will use it for moderate
distance (1-2 mile rides). I also have a long term goal of learning
to idle so that I can pass clubs… Is it easier to idle on a bigger
wheel?

My friend purchased a 24" Torker LX, which I like, so I am leaning
towards that size. Is there any major advantage to getting a 26"
wheel? I don’t think I’d want anything bigger.

Lastly, which unicycle would you recommend? If I end up getting a 24"
wheel, I will probably go with one of these:

Aesthetically, I think the Nimbus II and the Yuni look pretty cool,
but obviously I’m more interested in having a quality unicycle. As
mentioned, I’ve used the 24" Torker LX, and I’ve heard positive
reviews of Torker.

Which unicycle on this page would you recommend, and why do you think
its better than the others?

Thanks!
Jeff

Re: Unicycle recommendation

By the way, I am about 5’10"-5’11" and weigh 150-160lbs.

See this thread from yesterday; it sounds like your needs are similar.

The Nimbus ISIS is probably the highest-quality freestyle unicycle out there; certainly the best bang for the buck. The Torker LX is a decent starter uni, but the Nimbus ISIS is significantly better.

In general, most tricks (including juggling) are easier to do on a small wheel, but a 24" is still OK. I wouldn’t get a 26" if I wanted to pass clubs on it.

Thanks, this is helpful.

Just curious though, the Nimbus costs a lot more money than the LX.
Keeping in mind that I know nothing about the technical aspects of
bikes or unis, what makes the Nimbus a better uni?

The ISIS hub has a better interface with the cranks, which is one of the most common areas of failure on a unicycle. The Nimbus has a better seat. The long neck also looks cooler.

I have a 26" Torker LX that I used to take on pretty long rides (5-6 miles). I’ve had it about a year now and it has held up great. I am starting to have some troubles with one of the cranks coming loose, but I’m pretty sure that’s because I started taking it off two foot drops, hopping up steps, and the like. So I guess I’m saying that if all you are going to do is ride the thing around, then a Torker LX should do you fine, but if you plan on being mean to the guy you may want to spend the extra money on a Nimbus since it’s less likely to fail you in the long run.

One more thing, I found the LX seat to be unbearable. I spent a couple bucks on a 12" innertube and converted it to an air seat, and it’s treated my fellows great ever since then.

Re: Unicycle recommendation

I went with the Nimbus 29" Touring unicycle based on recommendations
from here, that thread on unicyclist.com, and rec.juggling. I figured
that since I already have a 20", it made more sense to get a 29".

I received my unicycle yesterday and it’s big, and fast, and pretty
awesome. I haven’t been able to free mount it yet, but haven’t had
much time to try. In time I’ll get the hang of it.

Thanks all!

Jeff
