Totally depends on what you want to do. But I would say take the larger additional only really if you want to do social event rides (road? But haven’t looked at the offerings). So the 19" probably makes more sense, as likely lots of opportunity to hang out and do tricks or work on skills with others - in addition to organized social events.
Not sure. Marco from Mad4One was at Unicon Grenoble and he used to bring his RV to all such events, but last time I talked to him he said he was getting too old to drive and live in his camper for the week (he was at Winter EUC in 2025 only for 1 day I think).
Anyone heard if Petra/Roland from Municycle.com (Germany) are planning to come? I would think it’s likely.
I don’t know for sure, but I would also think it’s likely. At the last 2 Unicons they had non-participent events with loaner unicycles (mostly basic beginner and freestyle unis). I think Minnesota even had some street/trial unicycles.
Definitely bring your 19" and I’d suggest the 29 or 36 as well, especially if you want to do fun road rides with others or if you want to compete in road races.
I think I’m leaning towards 19, 24 and 27.5. For social rides I’ll probably go for muni rather than road/distance and hopefully I’ll pick up some new skills on the small wheel.
Definitely not looking forward to the drive to be honest but can’t wait to get there! I couldn’t quite get my head around packing 3 unis, riding kit plus normal clothes and how I’d manage all that stuff through airports, trains and buses so driving seemed easier somehow. Might regret it though ![]()
Also rather than coming straight home I’m meeting with my family and friends at a music festival in Oxfordshire on the way home so it’ll actually be almost 4 weeks I’m away for!
Are there folk here who know the region around Steyr well or partly?
I’m already toying with a decent long cycle path / quiet road ride and tracking down some routes it seems like the Steytal Cycle Path R8 looks nice as does the Ennsradweg (R7) (if that’s what it is actually named) - though this one seems to total 200+km.
If someone knows these personally - what are they like? My interest here stems in seeking out the complete opposite of Muni challenges - where the run is going the distance and hoping finding the groove / speed - with zero focus on roots and the like ![]()
This all leads me to ponder carting with me my P-Frame Touring set up with a 700c narrower wheel. I’m less confident currently riding it but perhaps it would be the chance to have it stretch my legs -
Previously my plan was a standard 29er with a more muni tyre that while not that great for road racing is just more natural to ride / general purpose. (Note I am bringing a G24 for the muni events and general town riding)
But I see pictures of smooth non-challenging Austrian bike paths and my heart switches back to a touring rig for the sheer fun of riding that kind of route which we don’t have much of its ilk in the UK.
Decisions decisions - and if anyone can tell I really want to have my cake and eat it!
Regardless of your decision, you’re perfectly welcome to borrow my 32 for some road riding assuming we’re roughly the same height (5’10" / 178cm). It’s not the shiny P frame but hopefully still hits the spot for smooth distance zen…
Otherwise, i may be riding next to you (assuming i can keep up!)
Thanks for the offer Dave! I’m not as tall or a fast rider - but the main upshot of this is that a joint ‘zen roads’ ride sounds ace ![]()
I am following a similar route (but only from Essex), leaving late on Wednesday and arriving Saturday morning. We have some stop-offs planned along the way. Coming back I plan just one overnight in France (the alternative route) I don’t fancy being stuck on the Brussels ring when I have a train to catch.
Enjoy the drive and I’ll probably see you there. Go Team GB!
On August 6th there are a few workshops that I’d like to do, such as the Muni ride, some freestyle classes, and unicycle ultimate frisbee. But I’m not bringing any unicycles, and my parents are worried I won’t be able to do anything without my uni. Does someone have a Muni I could borrow for the ride, and/or a 20/19" I could use? Or know of other people that might have this? Thanks.
Have we met? Im using my phone so your profile image is quite small but I think I recognise you from the race at hillingdon last September?
Im booked on the 3.30am ferry from Dover but have a flexible ticket so might get an earlier one if the drive goes well. It should be around 9 hours but I just wanted a little leeway in case traffic is bad on the way down!
No idea
I didn’t make it to Hillingdon last year (I hope to go this year) but I have been to all the recent UK skills conventions and several muni weekends so maybe…? I just assumed travelling from the UK our paths would probably cross at Unicon at some point!
Yeah, im sure they will! I must be getting you mixed up with someone else if you weren’t at hillingdon though. I haven’t made it to the skills conventions but I have been at most of the recent muni weekends.
Hei Manius, you can borrow my muni 27.5" Qu-Ax RGB on 6th of august, if you want (I need it back on 7th of august in the morning). When will you arrive in Steyr?
Thank you so much! I am arriving in Steyr the night of August 4th.
I tried to write a PM to you, but it seems not to be possible.
Would you like to join the PreUNICON Vienna Signal group, then we could chat there if you don’t mind?
Or maybe you could PM me?
Interesting response I got re the marathon / half marathon event. Given my prediction around not being very fast it looks like I’ll end up being “stopped” and have the event converted to half marathon.
we will have a cut off time in the marathon race. If you need more than 90min for the first 21km, we will stop you.
Then you are at the end of the results with your time for 21k. I am sure that you are not the only one we will stop after 21k.
I feel bad to moan once more about this. But the framing is anti-uplifting or motivating. Does anyone else see this like me? Being stopped half way because you’re just too slow for the full race is simply a downer in my book.
Officially add in an 21km event called the half marathon. I’d probably opt for it consciously, with intension - and then my time on it would be my time (no ‘being stopped’ required) -
Equally, if I decided on balance to go for the marathon as I can do that distance - it would be due to wanting to prove something to myself that I can do the marathon in X personal best time.
I do get there’s complexity with city management - and I guess they run this primarily for those that can go FAST -
But once again this info is late in the day, only via an email due to my asking what the cut off time would be - it is just another sign to me that I’ll get to the starting line: dislike the chaos or overly pressurised atmosphere and not even attempt the event.
Prepare for chaos folks is my working assumption. Not just race stress but logistical stuff too.
90 minutes for the half marathon shall be manageable, assuming it’s on flat ground and you ride a Schlumpf.
Has anyone found information on where and when to check in in Steyr? We won’t be there from the first day and I can’t find out, if there’s some time limit on when we need to be somewhere the day we arrive in order to get our sleeping place (class room). I haven’t got an answer to my mail from over a week ago. But since most of us need to work that day, we somehow need to plan on when to leave work that day to still be able to drive to Austria and arrive in time.
I’m arriving a few days late as well and was told to go to the info point to check in (Ice hall, Rennbahnweg 6a, 4400 Steyr). I don’t know anything about the dorm housing though, we’re staying elsewhere.
I read this before that it’s in the rules. I think it’s common in races to do so (OTL/T.L.). Went to an MTB/Muni Race on saturday and it was just like that. (For the MTB on the long race even with multiple points where they were stopped if they didn’t reach the time required at that point.)
But don’t look at it as discouraging. Take it as a motivation - what a goal to achieve to not getting stopped! ![]()
