The world's second best unicycle seat (for tightwads)

I don’t know that any one person can take credit, the flat seat thing has been played with long before most of us were riding, but I do think that Pete and Aracer were the ones that really got the ball rolling.

I’m just glad to be helping move the process along, it was a while in coming, but I think the flatter seat profiles may become a standard…

I’ll be ordering the seats soon, hopefully get started on them this weekend

Just did two seats, some tips…

  • Don’t turn up the oven too much to “make it go faster” unless you want some nice grooves from the rack in your base…

  • If it’s taking too long, turn the oven up. It’ll flatten in a hurry!

  • Take all the stuck tape/foam off. Could be hiding a steel plate you need to take off.

  • Think “how am I going to restaple this cover” before you take out all the staples.

  • Only volunteer to do somebody else’s base if the cover is an easy on/off one

  • The cover/foam covers all the dents, flattened edges, and rack marks making it look perfect afterwards

  • But if you marred the edges too much, the bumpers are a pita to get on correctly

I’m still waiting on UDC the finish cataloguing all the new gear, then I’ll order the seats.

I was hoping to start flattening seats this weekend, but it looks like it’ll be another week.

I’ll post an update here and pm everyone on the list when the seats are ordered.

Ben

Sounds great Ben.

Thanks for the update. I’m still in but no rush (given the choice between working on the seats and riding, go ride!). Looking forward to your PM.

The seats have been ordered!!

So, here’s the list of folks I ordered seats for:

I worked out a small discount from UDC, based solely on the idea that I was doing a “not for profit” job to help out those in need; it is enough to cover shipping from UDC to me and shipping from me to you.

Total cost per seat is $75 USD, which is the retail price for a KH seat.

The seats will come with either the new velcro attached cover or the current draw string cover, this was dependent more on the availability of certain colors (green , yellow).

I paid for the seats with a credit card, our VISA payment is due the middle of May, so please expedite your checks or money order to:

I’ll start working on them as soon as they arrive, probably Monday, but it could be Saturday…

Once I get the first seats done I will start sending them out in the order I receive payment, hint, hint, hint

I like dark milk chocolate, so if you feel some deep seated desire to make me fat and happy, emphasis on fat, well by all means. But please, don’t go crazy, don’t add any money onto the $75, I’m doing this cuz I like working on gear and because it keeps me from becoming a crack head

I’ll post pics and updates as the process goes forward.

My check is mailed! Thanks very much Ben.

The check goes out with today’s post.

Thanks for taking it to 11 Ben!

Thank you, Nurse Ben!

Sending out my check today. Thank you so much, Nurse Ben! You’re the best

Thanks Ben

I just read the post. I’ll have the check mailed first thing Monday morning.

Sent

The proverbial check is in the mail (USPS). It went out with the Saturday May 4th post so you should be getting it today or tomorrow. Thank you so much for doing this Ben! If I’m not mistaken, $75 is the least that I’ve ever paid for a saddle and I’ve owned five. I’m so glad I got in on this deal of the century!

The check is in the mail!

Thanks mucho! This is huge!

A very big box was waiting for me when I got home…

…and so it begins, those sleepless nights, visions of steaming black plastic, my heart is just a pitter patter in anticipation; my wife is not so excited

I’ll start working on em’ tonight, try to get a round done over the weekend, got two checks in hand, already working on getting fat (thanks Scott!).

Glad to know I’m slowing down the competition at NAUCC. Maybe I should send some chocolate Dave’s way too. But for all I know, chocolate makes goats ride faster.

Just so ya’ all don’t think I’m just sitting around eating bon bons…

And here we are, ready for some flattening:

And a big yell out to Lance B. for going crazy and sending a whole bunch of euro chocolate my way. Dang dude, that was enough chocolate for the entire family and some

And yeah, it’s almost all gone

Before and After:

Eleven flattened bases awaiting…

I’m going riding now, but I will be back, sooner or later

I still need to flatten the plates, re-drill the bases, then I’ll glue and mount the foam. If things go well this weekend, I should be able to send all of the seats out early next week. My shipper is “recuperating”, so I may have to ship then myself, which could take a few days to coordinate

FYI: I don’t know that this has been mentioned, BUT, the flat seats work best on a KH adjustable seat post. A fixed seat post will work, but the nose of seat will seem low for folks who are new to flat seats. You’ll adjust, I’m just putting this out there so folks are prepared.

To make a fixed post work better, you’ll need to lengthen the “forward” portion of the bolt hole slots in the seat post mounting plate, this can be done with a Dremel or a 1/4" round file. Once lengthened, the seat will be able to slide forward and curve up a bit more.

Also, your grab handle will be set lower on a flat seat, which may feel odd at first. You can adjust the angle of the grab handle up by placing washers at the rear holes between the grab handle and the base.

Seat Post holes on non KH

I would think that I need to extend the rear bolt holes as well as the front ones on the seat post to allow the seat to slide forward a little. You probably did this many times already, just checking.

I checked my seat post and it already has elongated bolt holes. I don’t know the seat post that comes with the Nimbus 29" Road, but that is what I have. UDC doesn’t mention the seat post brand for this uni. I’m guessing that I will not need to file any holes.

Yes, extend the slots toward the front on all four bolts.

You could just wait and see what you think before doing any filing/grinding.

I rode my flat seat on a fixed post at Spring break, it wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t ideal.

I don’t have an example to show, so maybe someone has already done this and can post some pics?
