I have this ingenious solution to that problem, which involves putting the flat base in a pan of boiling water and then bending it whilst it’s hot so that it’s a nice curved shape
You’re sitting on the seat for “pure DH”? Man you must have gonads of steel, when I ride pure DH, I tend to stand up a lot, use the handle to keep control of the seat.
Maybe you should hold onto your seat tighter?
Pure DH, is that like Pure BS?
Seriously, it’s not the seat, all I ride is flat seats and if anything they give me better ride feel and more control because I can place my derrier where I need it to be vs a pre-determined location based on the curve of the seat. So like a bike seat, I can slide backwards or forewards depending on my needs.
I didnt set much but when i had to jump off or use both arms to keep from falling it wanted to slide out from under me, I like to stay far back into the seat so i can really use the handle to make it go were i want it to go.
I’m not understanding how that’s a seat problem, sounds more like a balance problem. If I’m riding something technical, esp downhill, once my hand is off the handle I usually “take a knee” because no amount of leg/butt pressure is going to control the uni at that point.
If you want the seat curve to hold you in place, then you want a curved saddle.
If you want a comfortable seat and enjoy having some freedom to adjust your seating position, and you use a handle to maintain control over the uni, then a flat saddle will be a good choice.
Imagine taking both hands off the handlebars on a bicycle: could you maintain control down something technical?
You can’t ride pure DH without using the grab handle, just saying…
I’m off to the Douthat Munifest, won’t be back until Sunday late, so at the earliest I will order seats on Monday the 22nd.
Once I order the seats, and have a cost per unit, then I’ll post instructions to this thread amd PM details to all the buyers.
I don’t know how long it will take to flatten ten seats, sorta depends on what comes up over the weekends, but I’ll do them in batches and send them as they are completed.
If everyone would be okay with sending a check vs PayPal, that’d be my preference as PayPal fees are a pita and I’ll need to put the cash in my account. to pay off the credit card.
Can’t say I am exactly looking forward to all the work, but I do look forward to hearing back from all the happy folks after they ride a flat seat. I am sure you will all be very happy, just like me
FYI, if you use a KH T Bar and/or a KH seat stiffener, the T Bar mount will fit fine, but you’ll need to modify the KH seat stiffener as it will be a little too long.
Not to knock all the work Ben is putting in here, but to be fair Pete and Ken started the revolution. Without Pete and Ken’s efforts none of us would have considered a flat seat as a feasible option (I’ll claim my small part for discovering it was possible to make one from a standard base, though my efforts were totally inspired by Pete’s cf base - my original idea was simply to make a plug for a mould to make my own composite base).
Ben can certainly be credited with doing a huge part to popularise the flat seat though - not only with making these seats for other people, but actually more importantly with developing my initial flattening experiments.
My involvement was only to encourage Pete to make a flat seat and to review the first prototype. I was about to get a machining outfit to cut me out a flat metal seatbase…until I found out that Pete was a carbon fibre whizz, and that he also had problems with curved seats.
Glad to see all the innovation since, especially this DIY version…hopefully one day we’ll get a production flat seat
