Ill test one for you ![]()
Just ordered mine and can’t wait to use it for my next 36er century! I’m hoping it will make the long journey more comfortable. Thanks Peter for making these! Btw, since the profile of the “Flatfish” is indeed flat, I’m wondering if that will that effect the “fit” of the kh t-handle under the saddle? I use an auxiliary support to allow me to use aerobars, so I’m wondering if it will still fit. Here’s a pick of it now:
No worries, it is $16NZD to Canada so I guess it would be similar, when your ready I will find out.
Mmmmmmmm Triton, nice.
I built this for road as the seat on my 36er was a real nut crusher, I had a free ride on my muni but after several rides on the flatfish I really hated the Freeride.
Cheers.
I know of one person using a flatfish with a T-bar with no stiffener plate and no extra support and he says it is stiff as, so should be fine.![]()
I just delivered a Flatfish to a good trials and flatland rider, he has riden my Muni and says they will be great, I will let you know what he thinks when he has used for Trials.
Cheers:D
I can believe this flat saddle is extra comfortable, but the way it looks on a 36-er with a T-bar gets me frustrated. It looks like the statement ‘function is beauty’ does not work in this case.![]()
You can make them look good, Ken’s current seat has very little foam and he has used steel plates and bolts which increase the height front and rear, if you use standard foam and threaded T-nuts the result looks as below.
Cheers.
You can’t see it while you are riding, but you sure can feel the difference ![]()
Pete,
Is the seat with the “standard foam” using th KH Freeride foam and cover that has the crotch relief cut out or is it the street style with the flat foam?
Do you find that giving the seat base a slightly upward tilt equals the “retention” of the classic “sway back” seat bases (Velo, KH, Nimbus)?
Can the seat base be drilled for the current KH rear seat bumper, which has a slightly wider bolt pattern?
I think that is in part due to what you are used to seeing. If you saw a curved seat on a bike, I think you’d think it looks odd also. Now I’ve gotten used to it, the banana seat, to me, seems a bit weird.
The photos I have online are side-views, so it gives the effect that it is narrower than it is. It has the same width as a regular KH saddle.
Yes, a flatfish will lower the handle, but I think it’s more complex than that.
On a curved saddle, even though the idea is for the widest part of the saddle (at the back) to be where your weight is planted…in reality most people slide forward and sit at the bottom apex of the curve. The widest part of the seat moves backwards and supports thin air.
If you sat where you supposed to sit, then the angle that you have the handle is going to be much higher than if you sit on the lowest point of the seat. So even though you have your handles angled quite far upwards, I think the effect is less than it looks.
I see you’re using a ?freeride saddle. That is fairly flat, so comfort wise you might not notice as much difference. The main difference is that the KH Freeride saddle relies on foam to make it flat- so the advantage are to people with fat thighs or short legs (like me), who need less foam but still want a flat saddle.
Anyway, the KH T-bar has loads of angle adjustment, so probably not a big problem.

Another point, it looks like you are using a KH Freeride saddle, which is relatively flat, so the comfort advantage might be less for you. The KH Freeride relies on foam to flatten the seat, whereas the Flatfish is a flat base to start with. The people who gain the most are those with fat thighs or short legs (like me), who need more clearance and want less seat bulk. Putting too much seat foam on the Flatfish is a waste IMHO, because it defeats the purpose of a flat base (when you can flatten a curved base to an extent by using loads of foam).
Yip standard Free Ride foam with the slot up the middle, I added a small wedge of foam at the rear to keep it flat.
I changed the angle around until I felt most comfortable, Ken has his almost level, individual preference I guess.
No the current KH rear bumpers do not fit, I am supplying 08 bumpers with the the bases.
Cheers ![]()
Ken, you should understand my pain, I’m still looking for the proper saddle for by heavy, short and fat legs
\
You should get one of Petes bases then ![]()
I’m getting one but… Can I use the hardware from a newer KH seat? I have older bumpers, but I don’t think it have any older seat bases with older hardware anymore, can I bastardized the hardware from a newer seat?
Yes all the hardware from a newer seat can be used, the only part that won’t work is the rear bumper, which I supply with the base ![]()
Cheers.
Not very clear for me, is it necessary to get some T-nuts separately ? If yes, which model ?
Upgrade, upgrade, upgrade…always an upgrade! I just upgraded 2 of my uni’s with new KH seats this year…I should of waited. I can’t wait to get one of these this Spring, looking forward to No Nut Crunch! ![]()
Use the t-nuts from the KH seat or buy some M6 t-nuts.
