I second that!
I’m sure my daughter will have her own account on here pretty soon, but until then, I’ll brag for her.
One more unicyclist as of today.
Awesome! It is great that you started her off early. What size uni is that? i have a friend with a 6 year old and she was wondering what size would fit him.
It’s a 16" Nimbus trials.
She’s 8 and small for her age. I have the seat all the way down on the frame and it’s just about right.
That is awesome! Her excitement at her ride put a big smile on my face.
Thanks for posting that.
Last two days I have been working on ‘stalls’. Riding slowly, stopping with pedal down and doing one or two idles and then riding off again. I’m really excited by this because it means I know how to ride into an Idle and I find that its easier to idle when you are not letting go of something because you are starting off already in balance. Right now I’m shooting for stopping while I can still pedal away. I’m up to 4 idles with my right foot down and 2 with my left foot down. I know that’s not very impressive but like I said I’m only counting the one where I rode away from the idle. I’m heading out in a few minutes to do another session of practice. Also still spending time working with a basketball on a uni and that is getting to be a lot of fun.
This is the same sort of excitement I feel when having accomplished something. It’s not as cute when a 50 year old jumps up and down screaming. Maybe it will be cute again when I’m 80?
Simply awesome!!!

My 11 year old has been stuck at the 25-30 foot mark for a week, then suddenly last night he started to freemount and ride for 150 or more feet..
Just now we were outside and he was riding over a 2x4 (not yet sucessfully) and he can free mount 50% of his tries
Me, I got 1/2 a rotation backwards, can now static and rolling mount on my left foot 75% of the time, 100% on my right foot, and can hop 3 times and ride away most of the time..
Rolling hops are still doable but 2 inch high and long seems to be my sticking point, I think the seat is to high.
That’s so great I had to show my non-unicyclist wife! Congrats for you and your daughter! I also loved how the other little one immediately chalked up the new record mark.
Today I:
Rode my giraffe for a mile again. I love that thing!
Today on my 29" KH I freemounted into a single weak-footed idle and rode away… then stalled into another single weak-footed idle and kept riding… then stalled into two weak-footed idles but had to dismount.
I feel like I can almost idle for real! Oh, and to answer a question I asked in another thread… it is much easier to idle on a 20" trials than a 29" Muni… but I’m sticking with learning on the 29" anyway.
Today I rode 34 miles on my 36" with 150 cranks. I only got off 3 times to rest because I can’t freemount. I don’t know how people can do 100 miles in one day. With hills (none too lengthy) and headwinds I only averaged 7.5 miles/hour. I think I could have manage 50 miles with discomfort. That will be determined another weekend.
OK, picture this:
Try riding down the hills with a tailwind. I assume that your average speed would go up significantly. Maybe the key is picking the right 100 miles?
A 100 miles is still a very long way. My maximum ride is only about 30 miles in a day. I can picture doing twice that by taking a break and going at it again in the afternoon. I may give it a try just to break 50. The 100 miles in a day would be brutal.
Scott
I don’t know how you do 34 miles in one day!

I did about 5 miles today and I was supremely impressed with myself.
That is awesome mbalmer!
Maybe someone should be moving over to the today I… thread soon with distances like that ![]()
I couldn’t do that far. I have done about 16 miles on a 24" before and that took ages! I was really tired that night! ![]()
Mowcius
well as I mentioned before, my goal this spring was to try and get my video game addicted 11 year old out of the house and possibly up on one wheel.. He practiced ALOT at first and then got frustrated.
This thursday night after his 4 year old brother finally rode without training wheels, he got his 20" sun back out of his room (a miracle to find anything in there!) and kept doing his 20 - 30 foot rides. Then suddenly after a pep talk he hopped on and went for about 150 feet.
After this he was hooked on getting better!
ALL day saturday, from 7:30am till 9:00pm he was out there except for a short break here and there.
Now he freemounts 75% of the time, and we just rode around the block, on the bumpy sidewalk (drops and 2 inch rises) which according to google earth is .89 of a mile.. He upd’d about 10 times.. Not bad at all!!! Great control, and even spun around the corners by being a show off and grabbing the sign pole like a cartoon character.. He even got his first passing car “honk”..
Oh did I forget to mention, it was raining the whole time we did this! ![]()
How much more stoked can a Dad get?

Will have to start his own account here soon I guess, and now he’s buggin me to lower my Nimbus 29’r seat so he can try that one! What have I created?!?!?
Good for you Tom! I know that’s easier said than done getting kids away from video games. Now you have a shared hobby you’ll both enjoy the rest of your lives. And let’s not forget the good exercise part.
Hey Tom,
Congrats on getting your kids riding. I’ve never tried google earth for mapping routes so I don’t know how it compares with these.
Here is the map tool I like for planning city hikes/rides. It shows you elevation profile and has three different modes for cycling, walking/running(can go wrong way on one way streets) and straight lines.
This is my 2nd favorite:
Someday when I am not so tired, maybe you can explain that gmap to me.. I cant get it to do anything other than be a street level map.. Maybe it dont like firefox
The fact that I ride so slowly keeps me from contributing over there in the “grown-up” section.
I was pretty tired Sunday morning. I waited until about 3 in the afternoon and did 15+ mile ride on my 24". My intention was to ride up a steep paved road and take the trails down. It became later than I was comfortable with and my water was low so I just did an out and back on the paved road. I was happy that my body was able to handle the climb after the longer ride on the previous day. My sit-bones were really suffering though. I’m not going to ride today at all.
I’m really interested in the rides that take place in other countries but I can’t see riding 40ish miles every day for a week.
today i went riding on some hilly trails in the woods and didnt do half bad. i could ride up most of the hills. considering i could barely ride about a week ago im satisfied
