That is AWESOME! Great feeling isn’t it?!?!?
Keep up the great work!
Today I took the 4 year old to the park on his little bike and me on the 29’r and tossed stick across the parking lot to practice my rolling hops.. Son loved it and kept finding bigger sticks
Ugh, my rolling hops suck. I got out for a ride today, halfway through I changed my cranks from 137 to 165, ate a granola bar and got chased by a German Sheppard. I was glad that I didn’t UPD, he didn’t sound like a nice dog… I was wishing I still had my pedal wrench out! Fortunately he lost interest and left me alone.
And the whole time he was on your heels you were wishing you were still on the 137’s OR that you had a schlumpf ![]()
Only dog trouble I have had was some “fido pies” on my tires after a Muni through a few yards
Do you approach the object you are hopping at an angle? If you do that you have a little more room and time to let your cranks come around to the right position to hop.
Today I went for a ride on my coker in some strong winds. I was really being blown around but i really pushed myself and cut another 30 seconds off my route time. I also really flew up a hill that sometimes gives me trouble (It might have been because the wind was behind me at that time). I am thinking of switching to the 125mm holes on my cranks.
off to the river
Well this morning I finally rode down to the river. I had to walk down some steps and when I tried to get on near a bus stop I failed, repeatedly… Had to use the fence to get started.
Discovered that the path is not the nice smooth path that it is when I am running but I didn’t upd at all which was great. I felt very nervous all the time because of the free mounting problem, sometimes it is very reliable and other times, like when I can look really stupid, it is non existent.
Anyway, I think that counts for my first away from home ride. Riding along the river has been my primary goal in unicycling. Took 40 minutes, so with improved technique like not falling off I should be away as I can ride 6 or so km in an hour nowadays.
Cheers
Worked on riding backwards today. Freemounted backwards (roll forward mount) and managed about 6 pedals backwards quite frequently, with one 7er. That makes about… er… 2 pedals = 1 wheel, 24" wheel, pi equals… yes, about twelve feet, give or take a smidgen.
Getting the feel for it though. ![]()
Way to go! I am about in the same place. i was doing better last year but I am trying to get it back.
Today I rode another 15’ on nemesis curb. I was idling fairly well so I decided to try one footed pedaling and even wheel walking. Attempts at both were laughable. Way out of my league.
A dumb question… When you are idling, do you consider 1 idle to be a back and forward motion or would you count each direction as an idle? It’s not really important because I hope to be able to idle forever making this question moot! ;):![]()
Congratulations!
Best regards,
Sanne
Today
had 3 weeks without my uni <i was really sick!>
for today and last week:
i did a measured ride on a track of known length - 2.2km without dismounting or losing testicles <i get the 1mile badge right?>
my avg. “daily” distances are about 5-10km with breaks but i’m slowly geting used to longer rides on my noname 20’’
doing some little up/downhills <not very steep but i can manage going downhill on “a bit” sandy trails and manage going over roots quite fluently>
and… i did something funny:)
at a local park we have a shallow cannal.. and there is a “bridge” there..
about 2 meters wide.. but made of concrete rectangles (2m x ~20cm) which are separated from each other with small gaps (looks almost like this: ) and i managed to clear that one (ok… 10 tries, my uni took a swim twice - luckily i didnt fall into the water) but it was something like an achevement.
I’m also working on riding backwards. My best run is about 6 revs on a 20" wheel, but it’s starting to click and I can usually make 4-5 revs.
From the USA Skill Levels page:
ok… i dunno if it;s a skill but i bought a 2l bottle of coke and uni-ed with it in my hand… then switched hands… took a drink from it… then took my cellphone from my pocket… called my friend… rode off a curb and smiled to random people waving at the unicycling maniac with a cellphone and a bottle of coke in his hands ![]()
I’m in the same boat riding backwards and I am hoping that will help me to idle!
I always bounce my unicycle, usually to check for noises and tyre pressure but sometimes just for fun! ![]()
I have been trying jump mounts and I got it on my first try but now, every time I try, I always lift one foot up first like I’m doing a slightly up in the air freemount. I can’t physically get myself to do it normally again… If I can’t then I have no hope of learning unispins ![]()

I was nervous about jump mounts for a long time. I practiced jumping and landing without a uni anywhere near me. Then I practiced jumping while holding the uni in front and landing where I left the ground. I focused on jumping/landing with both feet at the same time. When I finally went for it, I nailed it on the first try. Since then my success rate has dropped a bit (couldn’t stay at 100% forever) but I’m pretty comfortable with them. I still haven’t moved on to spins though.
This is how I approached it too. Practice jumping away from the unicycle. I learned that I can’t even jump on flat ground. I can only jump about 3 or 4 inches. It’s too jarring to my bones. Weird. I would blame it on old age, but I think I have probably always been that way. I never could run or jump in PE, even as a kid. Weird.
Thanks for the help on jump mounts. I will practice that. Just weird that my brain kicked in after the first few perfect goes and now I can’t do it ![]()
I will keep practicing.

Today I:
Rode my giraffe down my gravel driveway, over treacherous large stone at the end of it, onto the road, then went over a mile! That’s my longest giraffe ride yet.
I also purchased stuff to fabricate a large rear-view helmet mirror for serious backwards riding in the future. My record is 158 feet and I have some crazy plans to go a long, long way once my skills improve. My mirrow is convex and over 2 inches in diameter so I hope to be able to see quite well. I looked at conventional bicycling mirrors for helmets and they didn’t seem adequate for my purposes.
It rained today.
So I uni’d to school anyway, in the rain! I didn’t fall off, even on the hill I have to go over. But I did have trouble freemounting since it was wet and I was wearing my backpack. Whatever. I only learned to freemount in the past 4 days.
I have a helmet mounted bike mirror to see what’s coming up behind me on the road when I’m riding my 36er. i have to concentrate pretty hard to see anything on it. You should post pictures once it is done.
Awesome!!! It’s confidence inspiring things like this that push us to keep riding, which is what will make you better..
Keep logging that seat time and you’ll mount with that back pack AND a bag of snacks in your hand
Thanks! You/people like you are part of why I’m finding this board a pretty awesome place. The encouragement.
(Though there are a few problems…but I’ll be happy right now.) And, actually…I was carrying my lunchbox in one hand. ![]()
Yeah, I figure I have to challenge myself to get better. Today, I Muni-ish’d (riding on a trail with my crappy department store uni) a trail near my house. It’s a little dirt thing about 6 inches across with knee-height grass on either side. Maybe half a mile long. Fell off five times, but freemounted back on every time!! though it took a number of tries.
And I realized that a path I used to find a challenge was more of a cool-down exercise now. ![]()
Needless to say…I’m going back out on the trail again tomorrow!
