So how long do y’reckon it’ll be before we get a wee kick-ass Tony Hawks or Dave Mirra on his bike?
Let’s put that sucker on a half-pipe and see what happens!
The bike’s handlebars appear to have servos on them. I don’t think the robot’s arms are doing the steering, but that the bike and rider are a single system.
Is balancing a moving bicycle easier or harder than balancing a Segway, I wonder?
Apparently it doesn’t need to be moving to balance (see here)
Shouldn’t this really be called Robot Appears to ride bike. Since I not only is the robot not steering the bike, it’s not his legs that are powering it either there is a motor attached directly to the wheel. It might as well just be a bicycle shaped robot.
it might as well be a bike …that rides itself
I have riden a segway and a bike before (duh) and they are both just as easy to balance, INCREDIBLY EASY.
You misunderstand. A Segway requires zero balance, it corrects for you (or reacts to your movements/position). I meant from a programming standpoint.
And yes I have also ridden both. Now I’ve got to try one of the new ones, where you lean to the side to steer instead of twisting the grip!
The seat’s too low, poor thing. I bet it has knee problems after a few more sessions.
There is a press release (PDF file) about the robot at the Murata Manufacturing web site: About Bicycling Robot Murata Boy
It can do a track stand without moving. I’m not sure what they’re doing to balance during a track stand.
If it’s just about staying balanced, I think they’re about equally hard.
On a segway:
leaning too much forward -> go faster
leaning too much backward -> go slower
On a bike:
too much to the left -> turn left
too much to the right -> turn right
Just one degree of freedom either way.
Aparently there going to adapt the tech to motor bikes so that pepole can’t fall off them!
Nah, too expensive…the riders will feel dumb and disbalanced(like me falling on my but on Tae-Kwon-Do lessons kicking, or when I found out that most people take 2 weeks to learn to ride a unicycle) and it will also suck the fun out of it. But the robot is cool. Pointless, really, what good is a bike-riding robot for? Unless he’s pedalling a bicycle-built-for-two and the person in the back doesn’t want to pedal…Then he’d get a motorcycle!
bicycle riding robot
I agree With you andy912912 (or as i should say Andy cuz i’m her bro. ) it’s no fun!!! (The REAL fun is actually RIDING IT!!!)
Riding the bike, robot(on his shoulders? Piggyback ride?), or motorcycle?
