You can also drive the tires with an internal width of 35mm without any problems, you might feel a difference at the limit of the air pressure that can be driven. The tire behaves a little more stable on the wider rim. I run my Surly Nate 26x 3.8 tire on a 45mm wide (39mm internal width) rim, which is actually too narrow. It should be a 65mm rim. It drives without any problems and the drivable limit is around 0.7 bar, while the 65mm rim can be driven with even lower air pressure.
