Quote of the day (from non-riders)

Not so much a quote just an interesting interaction. I cycled out to a coffee and food place in the woods around Oslo. It is not really accessible via car (Vangen hytte for any Norwegians here who might know it). You need to walk or cycle there. As I was leaving this older guy (probably late 70s) was just arriving with a friend and he saw me with the unicycle wheeling the unicycle to the path, so I could get going. He stopped in front of me, and actually blocked my way (not intentionally I don’t think). He said nothing… just stared at me for about 5 seconds. Eventually I needed to move on so I said, “Yes, I cycled here on this ”. Then he suddenly smiled and let me past.

The other day I was practicing standing wheel walk and this guy said “I can do that while juggling”, to which I responded “I’m trying to do that! Gotta learn juggling while wheel walking first though!”

Hi all, I have made a few changes to my unicycle rider simulation which I linked to in a previous post, and added a few questions and answers (108 now!). They pop up in when the CHAT button is tapped in the simulation (in a random order without repeats).

I have extracted and pasted the questions and answers below too, as they are all definitely “on topic” (and mostly lifted from this topic). If anyone has any extras to suggest, just reply to this post and (after due diligence and censorship and editing), I will edit the list to include them (and also add them to the simulation).

Here’s a question that a current AI model might ask us:

I got these 5 suggestions using a web based AI tool based on a google model called BERT, which I had found, and given the following hint:

Unicyclists are often asked: “where is your other <mask>?”

This AI tool is happy to complete the sentence in the following ways:

where is your other bicycle? (probability 0.143)
where is your other bike? (probability 0.114)
where is your other car? (probability 0.049)
where is your other gear? (probability 0.018)
where is your other passion? (probability 0.016)

I think this shows that unicycling is a minority activity which is not well represented in the very large training corpuses used by such models!
Or maybe it shows that “AI” is overrated?

[ the tool is at https://huggingface-widgets.netlify.app/ (look for “Fill-Mask”) ]

AU - Artificial Unintelligence. A child would already know that when you’re into unicycling, there is no other passion.
( I never knew that that is what the first to letters in Australia stood for ) :stuck_out_tongue:

Kids do come up with some good quotes, yesterday I heard “it’s a one wheel scooter”. I guess he knew he couldn’t call it a bike.

BTW, I think the first two letters for Australia is OZ…

@gockie and I did the Spring Cycle ride today, the only time you can ride anything, even a unicycle, over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. 1000’s of bikes, families, kids, lycra. One kid saw us and said to his Dad “there is only one wheel”. Dad said “they’ll have to do the ride twice”.

 So nice to hear original and funny quotes.

I’m gonna have to add that one to the dad-a-base.

girl (unimpressed): - So what?

Yeah, it would have been way more impressive if you had none :stuck_out_tongue:

Two men walking together and while looking at me riding one says to the other, “can you ride that?” The response, “yes, there is one in the gym”.

(Hint, as in the stationary exercise bikes)

Haha. He just bit off more than he can chew.

I meet a couple of “old” ladies at a junction. They just though it was “fresh of me”. When walking the unicycle people really want to talk.
But I don’t think I have ever had someone being mad at me. Have you?
Of course, some look at me in amazement or like I’m stupid for doing something this silly, but never angry.

I’m curious about the meaning of “fresh” in this context.

My dictionary mentions that Leftpondians use it to mean cheeky. Is that the meaning here?

Yeah, im not surprised you are confused - its not the correct use of the word in english.
We say in Danish someone is “fresh” when they have a surplus of energy e.i. get up early or take initiative.

A couple of times in many years when riding on the sidewalk… :person_shrugging:

And one time when I didn’t stop at a small road intersection. I should have.
Also, the guy was driving his car way higher than the area speed limit. I would have had way enough time to cross the road if he was following the speed limit.

Ah, that makes a lot more sense, thanks.

I think I might have gone with “overenthusiastic”, if I understand the context correctly. I can’t think of anything better off the top of my head.

enthusiastic is the right word, but not overenthusiastic.

It’s a positive remark. In layman’s terms «nice going, dude!»

that was what I was thinking when you chose the word fresh. Danes always think something like that “er friskt”, though I had forgotten you are Danish, but I don’t know what that has to do with angry peeps

Yes, Dutchies don’t know that unicycles don’t follow the same laws as bikes and when I ride on a foot path, which I am required to by law, peds get angry. Ignorance is not bliss in such cases.
