This morning I had a cyclist ride alongside and say “You make that look easy”.
I told him: “It is, you should lose the training wheel and give it a go” to which he chuckled and rode off.

I was explaining to the curious owner of a 10k+ carbon fiber Mountain bike why I have only one Wheel, his logic is 2 wheelers are easier, more fun.
I said “due to budget constraints, I can only afford one.”
It took a few seconds , but I got a smile from him!

I’ve only ever had one unique comment on me unicycling. A few months ago, I was unicycling down my neighborhood and a little girl, probably around 3 or 4 years old said “Look! A bicycle!”. Her mom then replies to her comment saying that name of what I was riding, in fact, was a “onecycle”. Still not sure whether that was a joke or a lack of basic understanding concerning one-wheeled, man-powered vehicles.

I’ve gotten tons of funny comments, but one of my favorites was when I was riding my ultimate wheel in my neighborhood. There’s a toddler, a dad, and I assume a Grandpa. The toddler says “Woah! It’s one bike!”, to which the dad responds “It’s one wheel!”.
Of course it’s common when I’m on whatever size unicycle for a mother to educate her young one in latin. Other comments I hear a lot include:
“Do a wheelie!” to which I respond “There ya go!”
“Do a flip!” to which I respond, “No. You do a flip!”
“Do a trick!”
“You’re the coolest person on campus!”
“That’s sick as (insert four letter word)!”
“That’s bad ***!”
“Don’t die!” if I’m on my giraffe.
Another funny comment I heard one time was “I wish I was that cool. I really do.”
Then of course there’s the typical reaction of trying not to make eye contact, to which I just face them and ride backwards. Sometimes I’ll even talk to them!

Rode to our National Arboretum yesterday. Coming up the “zig-zag” path I noticed how easy it is to catch isolated words from distant voices in the breeze - like “hey”, “unicycle”, “awesome”.
Next I was cycling along a footpath and there was a bus which had just offloaded a group of schoolkids who were blocking the path - the teacher said something like “ok lets make a bit of space for this unicyclist”. Everyone turned, looked and started to move - I turned my 29er and rode off the path down a fairly high kerb - there was a chorus of cheers - “hey”, “whooo”, “look”, “yeah”, “hooray”.., and then “he’s got a mountain bike tire”. A thumbs up was my response.
Finally near the end of this ride I was passing a spot by the water where people often park to consume their purchases from a nearby McDonalds. This time it was jeers rather than cheers - from some young people in an SUV - derisive cackles and laughter. I assume it was because of me - it was getting a bit dark, so I dunno - maybe they were just looking at a Donald Trump cartoon on their phone.
I love that. I’ll use it next time I am asked.

I was finishing a ride a few nights ago, riding back to my house. When I turned onto my street, a couple was walking together in the street at the perfect distance from me that if I worked to pass them, I should have passed them and immediately dismounted. So, I rode slowly while my dog plodded along. What I didn’t realize is that the last 40 yards of my ride was spent “stalking” them while my headlamp on my helmet, my other headlamp on my unicycle frame, and my led hub light did a really good job of lighting them up. When they turned around, they couldn’t see me. Only a bunch of bright light. So, as they passed my house I dismounted behind them and then they turned around to look, I called out “Hi! How are you doing?” as I walked up my driveway.
The husband turned around, and exclaimed “Hey! It’s the unicycle guy!”, and we had a quick chat.
I didn’t know I had been given a title by anyone in the neighborhood.

I seem to do most of my rides at night due to the heat (100F/38C during the day) in the summer. In the winter, I ride at night because it gets dark very early. So, many people see me and my lights, but I don’t get to talk with many people during my night rides (my dog is normally with me, so that may be a conversation barrier at night as well).

The other day I entered a small ferry to cross a river. The cashier was really puzzled and didn’t know whether to charge me the price for pedestrians or bikes. Between him and his boss: “What do we have here?” – “Well this… this is… is… … a carry-on object!”

I had a bizarre one this morning… a cyclist yelled at me “Two wheels are faster” and then was gone, giving me no chance to reply. Maybe he was the original Captain Obvious.
A few years ago, I organised a cross-country group ride that included a river ferry crossing (twice). When scouting out the course on my own, the ferry cashier charged me the bike fee. I told him that in the national traffic rules (this was in the Netherlands), a unicyclist is considered to be a pedestrian. He accepted that (oh well, it’s actually true) and a few weeks later when the total group of 20 riders took the ferry, the cashier remembered and charged for 20 pedestrians, twice.

I swished past an older fellow walking with a cane on a packed gravel path.
Me: How’s it going?
Him: I don’t know how.
It was cute. I appreciate that kinda stuff.
I might as well! If someone says that. Most people I ride by just act like it’s normal. Which is better than the “You can only afford half a bike?”
WOW, what an enormously post-populated topic this is!!
Inspired by this, I have just created a web page which is a unicycle riding simulation, which (after tapping “START”) has a “CHAT” button which, whenever tapped, pops up a text bubble with something like “You’re missing a wheel!” and a second later pops up another bubble such as “..front or back?”.
Partly by dredging this topic, I got about 70 statement/response text pairs which are randomly presented at the “CHAT” button press.

It is only quite small and self contained (about 50KB) and does not use cookies, or do anything at all on the server.
Although it does work on phones (even an old iPhone 5s), it is MUCH better to use on a real PC with a decent screen and mouse. By the way, the browser simulation is quite realistic and you can modify the speed and give it a small “nudge”, possibly making the simulated unicycle with rider fall, so its kind of fun to use.
A personal note is that I went for a ride yesterday (when my simulation code was almost completed), and when I was heading back to the car, someone yelled out “can you do a wheelie on that?”, which oddly enough nobody has ever said to me before. I just had to stop and tell him about my SVG toy!
