Those here who are on Strava, the endless discussion “please add unicycle as its own category” has been reopened!
But this time, it seems the Strava people are following the :+1: so please come and drop a comment!

I’m “M Burnham” on Strava. I might add “Unicycle” when I learn to ride more than 20 meters. :grinning:

As of today the post on the strava community hub has gathered 211 thumbs up.
We can do better!
Strava has a few activities that must be niche activities like unicycling, so it should not be impossible.

Almost all of my Strava is unicycling.

strava finally replied to the “please add a unicycle category” feature request… to say no. https://communityhub.strava.com/t5/ideas/please-add-unicycling-as-a-sport/idc-p/37372/highlight/true#M17378

Oh well. Here’s me btw. Most of my activities are unicycling. I categorize them as bicycle but annotate which uni (or occasionally bike) it was on

All my rides are on a unicycle, mostly my G36er.

This thread startet seven years ago… there wasn’t any success on adding an unicycle category, was there?

I’m asking because I’m thinking about starting some movement for the Garmin app.

Komoot has it already implemented.

Last I remember strava chose not to add unicycling and that was the outlook for the forseeable future. If other fitness tracking apps implement unicycling it may be easier to change to them than lobby or wait for strava to follow suit.

I think they recently added some activities.

Unicycling not being one of them.

While I still believe it is distinct enough to have it’s own spot on Strava.

Yep, the lobbying (at our own little level) has never paid off and after years of asking, there is still no “unicycle” activity on Strava event if they claim to offer more than 50.

We could always just “take over” another activity, like “snowshoing” and annoy them with “snowshoing” activities during the summer on local bike park trails …

I saw that they also had kitesurfing on there. I figured that there had to be at least as many unicyclists as there were kitesurfers. The AI chatbot I asked didn’t seem to think so though. It seemed to be certain :face_with_raised_eyebrow: that there were 1.5 million kitesurfers worldwide, but that unicycling was merely a niche activity done by circus performers. So much for advanced AI knowledge.

There is probably way more kitesurfers as there is unicyclists. Where I live (on the french coast), everybody knows at the very least one kitesurfers, and on any windy day, there are kitesurfers on the water. For unicyclists… We are probably less than a dozen (and yet, there is a circus school) going outside and potentially recording rides for strava. And the city has 80k inhabitants.

Hi all! I’m papawheeliedon on the platforms I most enjoy. My last name and the one given to me by cycling are unique enough to be easily found, most times, or hard to hide depending on how you look at it. Even still, I’m jumping on the bandwagon I’ve seen in here: adding (unicycle) to strava. One could think of it as silent protest against our exclusion from the stand-alone sports. (lightheartedly, but still) Anyway, can I also just let everyone know…for the first time, I had the idea to ask if anyone uni-stravas…but Searched it first! Bam. There’s already a post like that. Thanks to the OP and everyone. I’m happy to have found already some unicyclists to interact with - globally no less! Has anyone else noticed, you can look up your Facebook friends and follow them on Strava, but they haven’t posted an activity for nine years and likely don’t have the app in their current phone? Anyone? I’m two years into recovery from my addiction to truck driving and I’m down 40 (it was 50) pounds, my knees bend pretty good and don’t hurt, stoked about fitness. Physically, it’s 1998 for me. But of my social media contacts…I may as well click Like on all my own stuff. That would be one Like. If you’re still reading, thank you. There’s nowhere else, on earth, I can bring this frustration.

My skill level is not advanced, but I can get on one and do it. My firmly held opinion is the existence of a 100X factor: riding any (20-24-29) of my unis across my quarter mile spot feels like mountain biking 25 miles. I have to jump off and walk it off a couple minutes after one rep. On the two niner, my main and fave, those pedals push up hard. My thighs be burning. My point being, the huge leap in efficiency from walking/running to riding a bicycle, is absent when a pedestrian mounts the uni. Riding a uni is (wonderfully) way worse than walking. Unicycling is clearly it’s own thing. If no different than cycling, then all bicyclists can uni! Good job Strava.

There was a “reconsider adding new sport types” complaint thread from late 2024 through mid 2025 in which they officially responded that they had no plans to add any new sports. I finally deleted Strava after that, no longer feeling any reason to use it over any other tracking method…
