Hot days required to remove backpack to backseat
My misleading use of a term, but referring to the extent of numbness and loss of feeling in anatomical parts that come into contact with the seat; especially after hours of riding. So, surprisingly, Iām finding a curved seat with little padding better than anything else.
I am just back from a 40 mile road ride with the KH Slim and can confirm very little discomfort compared to the Freeride. What I sensed with the Slim whilst riding is that the thinner padding allowed my sit bones, and other boney bits to penetrate the padding to give support. With the other saddles for me the thicker padding becomes a major influence in support and my sit bones never quite get chance to help as much. Consequently the padding ultimately pushes on fleshy bits and with me causes numbness.
This doesnāt work for me so I guess people differ physically. Also, I prefer the seat to be curved because on longer rides I can shift my weight backwards and forwards to exploit the different points of contact that I can achieve.
KH Slim
I use the KH slim and its much better than any other saddle I have tried for long distance⦠but I have heard a rumour that KH is bringing out his own flat saddle in the near future which is on my wish list
Oooooo! I gotta have one.
So for a stock saddle on a 36, would you guys recommend the KH Slim or the Impact Naomi, or something else? I use the Naomi on my 26", but Iām not sure if I should get something with more padding for the 36.
These 36ers are so gorgeous that I would feel like I was defacing the page with mine. Nimbus Titan, due to get de-rusted and painted because it is my winter ride. No touring set, no brakes, Coker tire, stock 137?mm cranks, Semcycle 10" tube airride saddle.
Teresa Hemminger (now Abrahams) had a 36" unicycle made for her in the late 70ās. Of course it wasnāt a Coker, it was a handmade, wheelchair-rubber like all the mostly 40-inchers made by Tommy Miller. She probably still has it.
The history on the Coker unicycle is fascinating. It would be interesting to trace the whole story to see how that wheel spec made its way to becoming a unicycle. Were those wheels originally developed for the Coker Monster bike, or for their mock-penny farthing? Probably the bike but Iām not sure. Then itās very cool to hear that Guy Hansen had a part in getting the idea going.
In any case, the Coker certainly opened up a whole new area to our sport!
Here it is in its current configuration. I keep fiddling with the handlebar arrangement. Last November I did a 26 mile ride non stop using bar ends most of the way, but I actually prefer riding in a more relaxed upright sort of style. You get to see more of the scenery and wildlife. I use the T handle as a sort of tiller, but more to give me feedback about whatās happening under the wheel than for me to control the uni.
UPS man delivered my new Titan on Monday.
New color-matching pedals are on the way. Iāll have to upgrade the brake. And weāll see if the saddle stays or goes after I get more time in it. All that said, it is a joy to ride.
That looks freakinā schnazzy dude! Great color. Flatten the seat, and itāll be fineā¦
Thanks, Killian. One of these days Iāll flatten a saddle, but for now Iāve just ordered a black impact hoping thatāll make the ride more comfortable.
I just came back from my first real ride on the Titan. Four miles on paved roads. I averaged 8mph with just a single dismount (read: crash, but luckily I had gloves on because I couldnāt outrun it). Iām signed up for a 32 mile ride in July, and hopefully Iām good enough on the Titan to use it instead of a two-wheeler.
Are those United Cranks? If so, how do you like them? Flimsy at all or do they seem solid? What length are they?
Yes, United 127s. I think theyāre fine structurallyā¦feel solid as a rock to me, but maybe Iām not pushing them to their limits. But I do plan on getting Venture2 125s when UDC restocks them later this month. Nothing to do with the quality of the crank, but I want them to be black.
Okay. Thanks. Iām getting some longer cranks to do some climbing on my Titan, and am trying to decide if I should spend the money to get ventures (which are on sale ) or just get Unitedās. Think Iāll still get the Ventures⦠Maybeā¦
Iād go with the Ventures. These āUnitedā cranks are a bit flimsy (and ugly) from my experience with them. Still, on a 36er you donāt need that much strength unless you do muni on it.
Iāve had two pairs of those venture 2 cotterless cranks in two lengths and they are definitely worth the money. I didnāt think I would notice a difference but there was. For the better, lighter and way less flex than the united cranks.
Hi, could you please post detailed photo of the break? I would like to make a brake for my old 36", and it could help me a lot Btw do you know the name of this brake? Thanx
Edit: Is it this brake? http://www.unicycle.com/unicycle-hardware/brakes/sunlite-mx-sidepull-brake-kit.html
*brake
Yep, thatās it.
Iāve used those, they arenāt the best looking, and they are obviously the cheapest cranks available, but they do work. Iād really worry about bending them if Iād used them for drops or hopping.
