I wonder what this means. Could it be that a 32 will show up in the Nimbus line before long?
That’s amazing!
I wonder if they’re going to start carrying the wheels as well.
(Personally, I really like my 32".) (However, I’ve never ridden a 29r, I may like that just as well.) (Perhaps I just tend to gravitate towards odd stuff.)
That’d be cool if they came out with a Nimbus version. I’d much rather see unicycle companies invest their time in 32" than 650b.
Josh explained at the Unicon that he could find a 32 tyre (it’s this one) but not a rim, but rim a not really an issue to build for Roger with his Dominator profile already used for 24/26/29/36 rims; we just probably need to wait some information from Roger for a new 32" Dominator 36H rim !
The matching Kent wheel can be used for unis, but they are not ideal. Not as wide as most unicycle wheels, and 48 spokes. So I can see why Josh made that statement. Still, they are useable, if you’re willing to work at it a little, and don’t plan any hard-core off-road stuff with them. I use mine strictly for road riding, and no complaints. (And it easily handles small stuff like going off curbs, etc.)
I laced my G32 as a 36hole and it works fine… I have a fixed 32 as well which I used the nimbus 48 hole hub ![]()
Or a 32 option for the Nightfox.
I think you do: to begin with, you ride a unicycle! ![]()
That would be a perfect application!
Didn’t someone already make a 32’er out of an Oregon frame, making a sort of miniature Nightrider Pro? UDC could very easily get on that
Though a mini Nightfox would be great too!
Monsterous Ride
Nice little ride on the G32 this morning ![]()
My new 32
Built up over Christmas…
Kent bicycles rim, tube & tyre
Nimbus 48h ISIS hub
Spokes are 36er stainless spokes cut down to length by UDC UK ![]()
Laced 5-cross over-over-over-under-over by yours truly ![]()
Nimbus Impulse 36er frame (125mm, bent in to 100mm)
KH dual-hole 110/137 cranks (for now)
Fairly ancient
Qu-ax magnesium pedals, for now
Nimbus gel saddle
Nimbus 300mm seatpost, single quick-release seatclamp
Great build! Congrats! You’re gonna love it!
Here’s mine.
Until I get some more money, the wheel’s playing swapsies with my 36er.
That does however come with the advantage of having brake and bars set up ready.
The wheel is using the standard spokes and nipples and a 48h red Qu-Ax ISIS hub. The larger flanges mean that 3 cross is way off for spoke length but 4 cross is spot on.
I estimated the rim ERD at ~650mm.
The stock b*ke hub measured up at 44.5mm PCD, 53mm spacing. This equates to 3 cross spoke length at ~309mm.
The Qu-Ax hub comes in at 63.7 PCD, 64.5mm spacing, giving ~300mm 3 cross or ~309mm 4 cross.
Actually measuring the spokes (in the wheel, I forgot when they were out) gives me more like 312 so I guess the rim ERD is actually closer to 654mm.
Anyway I hope that calculation helps someone out.
First congrats on the new build! Looks great, I’ll be interested to hear how you like riding it, especially compared to the KH36.
Second, it’s interesting that you figured your ERD out to 654. That’s what I got, too, but jtrops (who is pretty experienced in this kind of thing) got 662. I wonder why the big difference?
Anyway, it’s great to see another 32" on the road! Cheers!
Yeah I’m not sure yet. It would be a better to compare it to a road 29er I think as it’s only got about 2 inches on to of that compared to almost 5 inches less than a 36er.
I initially didn’t pump the tyre up enough and it was pretty lousy. Now I think I’ve got the tyre a bit too hard as it’s pretty twitchy and even small road bumps are a pain in the backside (literally).
I’ll drop the pressure a bit and report back once I’ve done more than my current 4 (broken up) miles.
No idea but 662 sounds way off. I can’t imagine the rims are different sizes.
Yeah, I can’t wait to see a production 32" and more of them around! From the other thread it sounds like that might be before the end of the year!
Here’s mine.
Qu-ax 36" frame, clamp, and yellow 48 hole hub.
Nimbus 137mm VentureII cranks, pedals, seat post and modified saddle.
Kent rim, tire, tube, and rim strip, purchased directly from Kent.
UDC Stainless spoke nipples.
It appears to weigh 15 lbs. by my non-scientific “weigh self, weigh self holding unicycle, do the math” method.
Very satisfying to ride, smooth and stable. Thanks to all who paved the way.
Does a 32" wheel feel more like a 29er, or a 36er?
Like everything else unicycle-related, that evaluation is very subjective. My own take on it is, it “handles like a small wheel, rides like a big wheel.” What that means is that, unlike a 36’r, it is very maneuverable. I can ride it in crowds or tight quarters with no problem. (When I had a 36’r, I never felt really comfortable on it, like I wasn’t really in control all the time. I would always mentally go through a ride route and try to plan ahead how to handle or avoid “problem” areas. I don’t blame the 36’r for this, this undoubtedly had to do with my own lack of riding skills and experience.) I ride the 32 with confidence wherever I want. So in that sense, it’s more like a 29".
Having said that, the wheel size is also big enough to cover distances handily, particularly with short cranks, and/or a geared hub. I use M4O 110/130/150 cranks and a Schlumpf hub, and enjoy riding along next to my wife on her bicycle for 10-20 mile rides (occasionally 30) without any issues. For me it was a perfect fit, and I eventually sold my 36’r.
While the 32" size probably isn’t for everyone, it works very well for me, and I’m very happy with it. The build itself was somewhat challenging, but coming from a mechanical engineering background, design and fabrication were not daunting to me. The finished product was well worth it.
Nightrider 32
Having tested the new Nightrider 32 I can officially say “it’s awesome”
there are pics on my Facebook page if you want to see it ![]()
