Yeah it was a great day!
Not the first. But nice to have another.
A guy here planed to do it for a whole year on his ungeared 29. I don’t know how long he lasted.
I am trying to picture what happened next. For me, I would expect a soggy landing.
Scott
Nope! That was part of the line she was doing, she must have done that part at least 5 times no problem. I did not have the courage to attempt it myself in front of all the people at the beach watching us.
Oh yeah, it was a really great uni day!!!
And no sored muscles for me ![]()
I landed most a couple of times ![]()
Aev and Dane: great photos and looks like cool ride.
SqueakyOnion: have you ridden the car?
I got two more pics from last weeks ride.
Isn’t it awfully hard to keep your balance with that heavy traffic light strapped to your back? It looks so effortless. Great idea though, I think I’ll have to try that out in Freiburg.
This was at 1am on Sunday morning at the apex of the Sepulveda Pass. Carmageddon traffic from the closure of the 405 NEVER materialized, and the nightride up there was amazing! The bridge in the background is the Mulholland bridge, the destruction of which caused the 2-day closure of the busiest freeway in America.
While up there, I decided it was a perfect time to ride on the 405 freeway, but unfortunately the authorities weren’t in agreement. I chatted with LA Police and CHiPs at several onnramps to no avail. I would have thought a Unicyclist with nobody else around at 1am, should be able to have some pull?.. wrong!
CHP had NO sense of humor whatsoever when I tried to see if they would just roll with me on the freeway from Wilshire onramp to Santa Monica offramp… evidently they are trained to not cave in to a “nobody will even know it happened” / “but it’s just me alone… you can hold my phone so you know I won’t take pictures” pitch.
LAPD was pretty cool tho… they were hanging around on their motorcycles at the bridge area at the corners and near the newsvan encampment. Several of them had participated in riding with Los Angeles Critical Mass and recognized me from there. All they were there to do was secure the sepulveda/freeway fenceline near the bridge and one onramp. When I talked about going on the freeway, they said I could try, but chp would catch up to me pronto. Got the impression that if it were up to them, I would have been rolling down the 405!
Closed the ride with a SM Beach to Venice Pier and back loop… total ride mapped at 26.2miles. Have been exploring LA at night on the uni for about a year now, and would love to recruit other 36/29’ers to join me. If you’re interested PM me and we’ll do a ride or two!
Here’s the route…
Dances on H2O,
I thought you might take part in the bike vs. plane (vs. unicycle?) race during carmageddon:
Scott
I KNOW!!! Even a rollerblader did it and beat the plane, and at 2:54, it would have been just doable on the 26’er at a 13-14 mph average speed.
I was SO bummed, this event came about in a matter of hours, and I was in my car driving to Beaumont for my nephew’s birthday party when the media storm was just hitting… getting texts and statuses on my phone from the guys that were going to ride it. I got home at 10:30 that night and decided to climb to the bridge to make up for it! ![]()
By the way Scott… Los Angeles Critical Mass is coming up a week from Friday… 20-30 miles and the biggest ride in LA (1,000+ riders)!!

A few photos from a recent holiday at Ocean beach:
Non unicycle photo haha
This morning’s ride to the local forest trails started out well:

Then there were some signs of dark skies:

And by the time I reached the trailhead:
I made it about half a mile into the trails before the wind and thunder started to pick up and I figured I’d better head back. There was some light rain on the ride home but made it back to the house before the rain picked up. It turned out to be a quick passing storm and I probably would’ve been fine riding the the forest trails.
Got to see it from their point of view. That freeway closure was national news. If those guys’ job was to keep people off the closed freeway (I can imagine what some people would do if allowed on) and news of a guy on a unicycle got out, it would make them look pretty foolish.
Maybe you can try it again sometime when so many people aren’t paying attention… but don’t tell anyone where you got the idea!
Today I did my first MUni ride in a while, but all alone as usual. I seldom bother to take pictures of myself on a ride but here’s a couple – probably the first time I’ve ever uploaded anything the same day! It was my first ride on the brand-new South Fork American River trail. The second picture is looking back toward the trailhead near the bridge and Folsom Lake. It might be offered as part of the upcoming MUni Weekend 16…
I like finally seeing pics from you john!! I take the camera as an excuse to take breaks. but it makes you really enjoy the scenery as well. Very meditative, I love this thread.
Is that your powdercoated KH36 frame fitted with a 29" wheel? I ask because I am very much interested in following your timeline on getting the Schlumpf hub repaired. Who did you get to un-assemble it? Are you going to have Bronson Silva or your LBS rebuild it when it comes back? Make sure and keep us up to date on the logistics of the whole process in the “Schlumpf hubs: general discussion” thread. End threadjack here:
Most of my “cool” unicycles are red. That one is my George Barnes (GB4) handmade 29", which I’ve had since 2004 or so. So far on the broken Schlumpf, it’s still sitting on my desk, waiting to hear from Florian. But Bronson assures me it should be safe to ship it back, and then we’ll see what happens. After that I will rebuild it myself, possibly using the same spokes since they didn’t have a lot of wear & tear (and they’re not cheap). Unless someone talks me out of that. In the end, if I can’t true the wheel right, I’ll take it to my LBS for finishing touches. I’d be more likely to bring it to Bronson if he was less than 130 miles away. ![]()
Thanks Dane, I’m trying to train myself to process my pictures faster. Shotting RAW is both an advantage and a disadvantage…
