Nextie 36" carbon rim

And their answer will be “soon”

I would actually be surprised if I got an answer at all.

Just thought I’d chime in since I naively purchased the first version nextie unicorn pretty soon after its initial release. I never got around to build the new wheel with it so it’s just been sitting there collecting dust. When I was about ready to actually go ahead and order spokes for the new rim my research on the situation made me hesitant due to the reported blowout problems here. I was not willing to be among the first bunch of people injuring themselves seriously in high speed crashes… So I decided to postpone the project until after unicon, where I was planning to participate in the road races with my geared 36. So until yesterday I was still running a first gen stealth rim and regular nightrider tire. Just after coming home from my last marathon training ride before unicon while I was taking a shower I heard a very loud explosion. I knew immediately what had happened. Tire exploded, completely destroyed. I had been running a stretched Continental MTB 29 inner tube, tire pressure at 3 bar when I left, probably increased somewhat during the ride, booooom! Luckily it happened just after I finished and not while riding around 30km/h. But now I have an exploded tire, an unused nextie hookless rim that I’m afraid to try and a stealth I rim that I really don’t want to force another tire onto. Maybe if I could find a T-Monster and got matching spokes I could build the new wheel. 40psi would be enough for me but I really don’t want another thing to worry about while riding a geared 36 at top speed. Maybe my best bet is to get a dominator rim and KG light tire plus new spokes. But it seems pretty much impossible to make it happen in time for the marathon on Sunday.
Anyone going to unicon able to help me out in any way?

You mean, you’re looking for the exact rim + tire combo that sits unused in my home, right? It’s laced to a Schlumpf hub + BF you’ll have to disassemble (because it has been laced very badly), but you can use it if you’re really determined!
Just tell me before tomorrow, 8 A.M. (Paris time, 9 hours from now) and I bring it to Grenoble!

Wow! That would be fantastic! I‘d probably have to get some new spokes somewhere too for my Schlumpf/brakefast wheel. I won’t be there before Tuesday and I’ll probably skip the 10k this time. Let’s PM about it.

Congrats Terry!!
What website did you order that through? Or was it via a phone call?
And please let us know your results with inflation pressures.
Thanks.

After what seemed like an eternity, my T monster just arrived today. I was lucky to get it shipped directly from Vee tire co, ahead of arrival at bicyclebuys.com , where they will be available soon. All remaining Vee tire stock of the TM has been shipped to bicyclebuys so keep checking their website, or you might also be able to pre-order.

Im just hoping that the TM will stay on the rim at higher pressure!

Cheers,

Terry

Looks like you got a bit of a bargain from Vee too.

Now that I’ve had time to ride it, there’s a big problem. On level, smooth and even ground it pulls HARD to the left. Here’s what I’ve done so far to try to correct the issue, all to no avail:

1: inflated to various pressures: 40, 45, 50, 55, 60.
2: flipped rim
3: changed frame
4: changed saddle
5: turned saddle left & right of center
6: changed crank lengths

Wheel seems dished correctly (non disc hub) and is centered in frame. Tire is perfectly seated to rim with even bead all around and spins true.

Edit: switched tire around so the tread direction is reversed and now it pulls to the right. This would seem to confirm that it’s definitely a tire issue and not anything else I listed. So now the question is, what now?

Suggestions welcome.

Cheers,
Terry

It’s the curse. There’s no fixing that.

Should be ok as a Muni tire.

Two things yet to try:

  1. Mount the new tire on a Stealth2 rim/wheel.
  2. Try a different inner tube.

I highly doubt there will be any difference in behavior though. Sounds like a manufacturing defect in the tire.

Just seen your edit. If it’s pulling more to one side and is definitely the tyre, then I’d email Vee and see if they can send you another.

One side should not be different to the other. That sounds like a manufacturing fault. Is one sidewall noticeably more supple than the other? Slightly more tread I’d expect to be less likely to cause such an issue.

Gutted to hear that, especially after all that’s gone before. It looked so good in your pic too
:sob:

By the way, the new Vee tire 36er tubes now have longer stems with removeable cores.

Self steer is quite a different kind of situation to “always steers to one side” though!

It’ll be satisfying to reach a thousand, I’ve read every message in this beast.

My tale is as follows: I’ve ridden the Nextie rim with 25-30 psi with a bog-standard 36er tube for all but the last month—when I had a much better time with a 36er Foss at 30. Nightrider Lite, 4x spoke pattern, no Schlumpf, at least 5 miles/day average. My tire bead lost it’s rubber inseam and wore down a few tubes before I switched to Foss. I just pinched the Foss tube during a reinstallation because it separate from the rim when partially inflated. The replacement had everything to do with a clogged valve I wanted to change. Without any more long-stemmed tubes, I today rebuilt my wheel with the old Stealth II rim concluding my experiment for now. Has my trust in the Nightrider Lite/Nextie combo wavered? No. Will I replace my tire with a newer NRL, or a VTTM along with my future tube replacement? Yes and only if. Try not to let a mathematician see or abbreviate that last logical operator, and don’t let them tell you what the abbrevation should be, and absolutely don’t then google it.

Edit: it’s been over 229 days, so I estimate my mileage was well above, and certainly no less than 1200.

Is that the hooked Nextie or the first, non-hooked Nextie rim?
