Can anybody give me an idea of when school holidays end in NY state next summer? I’m planning a trip there and it would be nice to go when it’s quieter (i.e. not so many families out). We had a holiday in California two years ago which started just as the local kids returned to school. We’d not planned it like that, but it worked out well as there was no problem in finding hotel rooms.
A fair point, although NY state is quite large so presumably there is local tourism. Do those dates (late June - early Sept) apply generally in the USA? We went to California late August in 2007 and had the impression that most of the local kids were back at school already.
Different states vary as to when school starts. Some start in August. New York state usually, as stated above, summer vacation is between late June through August. Tourism of course, is a bit more popular during the good weather, but also it depends where your planning to go in the state, example NYC or other areas of the State of New York. The spring prices are usually a little less than the summer months, in the city (I think).
The NYC hotels are filled with people from Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, and Africa all the time.
It the hot tourist destination in the world.
The break time for NYC comes just after New Years, because from Thanksgiving in late November through New Years, its mad with shoppers from around the world.
January and February. But its also COLD then, because it’s winter.
The dates given above are fairly typical for US schools, though there are plenty of variations. It is important to note that summer (and other) vacations are not determined state-wide; it may be different from one school district to the next.
Naturally, when school is off, Americans are much more likely to be traveling and staying in hotels. But in popular tourist destinations, this is only a small percentage of the tourist crowd there.
Both, but my son is supposed to be planning an itinerary so not sure what he’s thinking other than a week in NYC. Sounds as if we won’t be able to avoid the local school holidays within the constraints of taking our kids during their school holidays. USA kids seem to get a much longer summer break than in the UK, ours have around five weeks (basically August plus a few days either side).
