My Rolling Unicycle Trainer

We need pics - or better yet, video.

Har, har…:D.I hardly do pics not to mention vids…

Yer really dont wanna see me floppin around on my sticks:D:D

Give you a general sense, it now takes me 25 mins on the trail to break sweat, on these sticks, less then ten. They make me feel really lousy.
I ll try again after work, and see what I can get out of em.

Ok, not too bad. It’s got potential. I found out 1 stick is better. Two is just too clumsy and in the way.
Oh boy, I havent been practicing idling or backwards since Ive been riding trails for speed, climbing and distance. So I had to get back to getting used to it. Its good practice to hold the weight of the rod to have the body eventually find the balance to it. Then after letting it go and not using it becomes much lighter and easier to manuever.

The one rod is good. Its like having a traveling pole, which is not necessarily better for balance, but rather, increases my saddle time , by not falling off and getting on less often. My idling is not perfect, but I can definitely see good improvements (or maybe its just focused saddle time). I can stop, roll back and go foward again alot smoother. I believe somewhere I hear that is a prerequisite to getting backwards riding proficiently.
Anyhow, I guess nothing beats it, then just plain ol saddle time on that particular skill.

That’s the most awesome thing I’ve ever seen in my life! Please give me the measurements if you can of your unicycle trainer. I wanna have someone build me one right now. Please let me know if that’s a possibility to get your measurements for the unicycle trainer.
I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease about a year ago. I’ve written in a cycles my whole life however I am 69 years old. I don’t wanna stop now so I thought if I had that giant Walker so to speak, I might be able to get some of my skills back. Please let me know if you can help me out. Thanks so much in advance.

There was the time when I had to push the baby buggy of our son. Ofcourse I did that using my 19" trial uni. It was remarkable/funny for me that I was able to stop without the need to idle. So there are rolling things around that are ready to use, like a shopping trolley, neighbour’s wheeled walker, 4 wheeled wastebins (too heavy), but hey, I wouldn’t be that surprised if someone here pushed his car.

@siameez

I’m sorry about my spelling above. It’s my speak to text that needs fixing. Lol.
On a sidenote, one year ago today, I rode it in a show with a kid on my shoulders. Now I’m afraid to even get on it. But I did. I held onto things and it was easy. But I wanna ride it. I don’t wanna just sit on it. I think I can do it, but I’d rather have some safety that if I can. Thanks again for your consideration. Where are you located? If you’re in California maybe you could make me one and I could pay you to do it. Otherwise, please give me the measurements and I can have someone try to make one. Thanks so much again in advance!
If you have TikTok, look up unicycle granny. You’ll see a lot of things I’ve done. Thanks again. I’m really hoping you can help me.

Totally irresponsible. If you lose your balance and fall forwards, the buggy will tip over backwards and the baby will tumble out. I thought of doing something like that with my son, but decided against it.

If you lose your balance and fall forwards you simply let your uni drop between your legs. You could say the same thing about running. If you stumble and and lean on the stroller it is “irresponsible”.

I seem to remember that I could lean quite a lot on the handle of my stroller without it tipping over. Not that I ever tried unicycling with it - the area I live is is surrouned by hills I need to get past to get anywhere.

As long as you very confident and chose sensible terrain and are able to compensate for any bumps and stuff without topling the stroller and catapult your kid around the place I think you should be fine.

Bypassers might easilly agree with @Setonix though, not to mention spouses. This, together with the thought of explaining things if something actually should happen deterred me.

Hello all!
Thank you all very much for the advice. It’s much appreciated! After all, we don’t know each other do we?
So I’m having one made I’ve guesstimated the measurements because I haven’t heard back from the guy that made it.
I’m going to put myself and my unicycle between the rolling trainer and ride. I’ve ridden a unicycle my whole life. I know what I’m doing. I know I could tip it over. I know I could fall however, I think it’s a little bit safer than me rolling my dog around in her dog stroller while riding my unicycle. I don’t feel very safe doing that. I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease about a year ago and affects my balance a lot. Zero tremors only I can ride my bike and my unicycle go figure lol I guess it’s about the wheels google Parkinson’s and you’ll see. Anyway I promise to be safe about it. Thank you for all your concerns. I appreciate it again.
I really would like to add that I don’t think this rolling unicycle trainer is for anyone that can’t ride a unicycle. I think the guy that made it want to learn how to ride backwards but he could already ride forward.
As far as I go, I can already ride it. I’ve ridden it my whole life… The last thing I did was a year ago in a show. I rode an unicycle. across the stage with a kid on my shoulders. I’m just a little freaked out about the Parkinson’s thing so my doctor said move it or lose it so I’m trying to move it. Lol here’s my link to my TikTok. If you wanna see any unicycle videos they’re all me. :hugs: please wish me luck lol I might need it. Ha ha.
Thanks again for all your advice. I really appreciate all of you! TikTok - Make Your Day

It just happens that recently I often thought that „static balance“ is completely different from unicycling (unless you‘re doing a stillstand). I‘m doing quite ok at keeping the balance on a uni, but that doesn‘t mean I‘m good at balancing on a kerb or so, let alone a slack line.

Impressive! I wouldn‘t dare to ride like that - I‘m too afraid of what could happen.

All the best to you, may the meds be able to slow the progress of the disease down as much as possible.

Good for you, Linda. I used to ride around with my kids on my shoulders all the time. When I was 30. My wife was not a big fan of that. When I was 50, I had some much younger friends with kids and they would let them ride on my shoulders. They knew me, they knew what I could do. Now I’m over 70 and my child carrying days are over.

I would see kids walking with their moms who said, “look. A guy on a unicycle.” I would ask them if they wanted to ride on my shoulders…moms love that. I did, however, pull that at a park in Vancouver, BC, with a 5-year-old girl and the mom said, “do you want to ride on the man’s shoulders?” I was astonished…perfect stranger. So away we rode. What a gas.

Unfortunately, I have long since dismantled it and used the tubing for other projects. That being said, I’m 6’2", so my measurements might not be right for you. The build was very simple, using an inexpensive conduit bender from Ace Hardware. I would suggest that you simply measure a comfortable hand height when you’re on the unicycle and build it to that dimension.

Thank you so much for answering. I appreciate it! That’s what I did was I sat there on the unicycle and put my hands out and the guy who’s making it for me measured up to my hands. I really don’t think it’s for someone that doesn’t know how to ride a unicycle…am I my correct? It might bend if they put too much pressure on it they might fall. I just need a little guidance with my new diagnosis so I feel better about riding it. I’ll just use it for a little bit.
I am just not ready at 69 years old to give it up yet. I am not ready to sit on the couch and watch movies the rest of my life. Lol. Any advice you have with certain kind of wheels I should get for it or any advice at all. I’ll be all ears. Thank you so much again. Have a great day!

unicycle wise, wouldn’t a municycle tire be more stable than a road tire (or freestyle unicycle tire).

I’m not sure how well it would work for a beginner. I think it might be useful. But I built it to learn to ride backwards. I did end up learning to ride backward, but to be honest, I found this thing to be a little awkward.
I used rollerblade wheels. Someone suggested castering wheels might be more appropriate. If so, I would definitely use urethane casters.

Got it. Thank you very much for your input. I appreciate it! It should be ready on Thursday. We shall see how it turns out. Lol can I ask you what the tape was for. It was all different colors was that so if you took it apart you knew where to put it back together?
I think it is gonna be a little awkward to hold onto it and ride it but that way I can do it by myself when there’s not people around when there’s people around I hold their arms, but I need to get the skill back as soon as possible. I only had lost in like a year ago. Thanks for all your input. I appreciate it!

Ok ma, this is men’s work:

ok I change what I said to “It would be totally irresponsible if I would do that”. My skills don’t come near theirs, but what if any of them have a UPD, which you don’t plan to do, but it happens, bad things can happen and it is better to avoid that.

Then don’t shower or climb a ladder or go up and down stairs or cross the street or drive a car.
