Cloud Atlas is impressive, thought-provoking, and philosophical but also has plenty of violence and adventure. Sometimes the dialogue/accents/pidgin is difficult to understand.
as far as Netflix series goes, The Killing is great, though just a bit drawn out in the second season.
Orange is the new black is entertaining, too.
