Monkey's Fist

ok, this is one of the few knots I can’t figure out. No matter how much I try, I can’t get it. I tried with two loops, three loops, three/four loops, and I STILL can not get this one done. My mother and father knows how to do it, but I want to figure it out myself.

Anyone have any tips on how I could figure this out? It seems like when I get my loops going, they get all tangled up, and I have to start over. Or when I do get the loops straight, one side has three, the other has four, and tightening up is almost impossible.

Have a look at these:

I always make the first three loops rather bigger than needed, the second set of three tighter, but still loose, and the final one almost as tight as the end result should be. Then I spend a lot of time tightening and dressing the knot. Be precise while making the loops and dress (make it correctly and look good) while you go.

What size chord/rope are you using? Its alot easier if you use thicker stuff, something as big as your little finger will make it alot less fidly. If it is stiffer it helps because it holds it shape better. Also once you have it loose it helps make dressing and tightning easier if you slip a small round obsticle inside.

what’s the use of this knot? is there a practical use?

It serves as a weight on the end of the rope for throwing. It is also used for decoration.

This is sort of like learning to ride a unicycle. You can read about it in a book or someone can give you pointers but in the end you still have to work it out yourself.

The comment about the size of rope is good. Use some rope that is at least 1/4 inch in diameter because it is not so floppy. Making a monkey’s fist with rope larger than, say, one inch would be hard because the rope would be too stiff and heavy.

Have you tried tying a turk’s head?

I did it! I would post a pic but I don’t know how.

Chord may mean:

* Chord (music), an aggregate of musical pitches sounded simultaneously
* Chord (guitar) an aggregate of musical pitches played simultaneously on a guitar
* Chord (geometry), a line segment joining two points on a curve
* Chord (graph theory), an edge joining two not-adjacent nodes in a cycle
* Chord (truss construction), an outside member of a truss, as opposed to the inner "webbed members"
* Chord (aircraft), the distance between the front and back of a wing, measured in the direction of the normal airflow. The term chord was selected due to the curved nature of the wing's surface.
* Chord (DHT), a distributed hash table protocol
* Chord (concurrency), a concurrency construct in some object-oriented programming languages
* Chord (comics), a comic book character who is the former mentor of the New Warriors
* Chord (structural system), the member that is perpendicular to the shear wall that is used to resist bending of the diaphragm (structural system)
* Chord (software), free software useful for creating stafless lead sheets

What are you saying, spunky-monkey? Did you mean to write cord?

…and if you tie it around a rock you can swing it around and hit people with it.

That’s my favorite use. I smashed a whole bunch of pumpkins with one last winter(then fed them to the deer.)

yeah, I can tie a turk’s head. I actually find those rather easy to do. I am using 550 cord for the moment, since its the only thing I have access to. I’ve been trying for this knot for some time now. Would using a core help? I haven’t been using a core since I can’t get the basics down yet.

I’m just into tying knots and stuff, to give me something to do while I look for a job. Not much can be done with a heat index of 105+ and no cable.

That sounds like a euphemism for masturbation if I ever heard one.

:frowning:

It is a well known name for a decorative knot.

However, by today’s politically correct standards, this may no longer be a politically correct name. Is anyone out there offended?

I have always just used the rope with no core inside the knot.

If you find yourself back in Memphis let us know. We have a small group that rides almost every weekend. It is hot here too, which means we have to ride early on Saturday morning.

I’ve got two monkey fists (Three stranders round a golf ball) on my meteor and a four strander around a 3 strander around a golf ball on the end of my practice rope dart.

I’ve also got a custom pile of metal on a chain as a rope dart, but that one’s a bit too dangerous for my liking. I nearly detached a retina hitting my head with it.

i find it much easier to work with a turks head and tighten it into a ball, much neater aswell. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turk’s_head_knot

I am back in Memphis for a long while. Got home Monday night. I’m still getting settled in, but I am looking forward to riding with you guys and gals again. You still riding Tuesdays at Overton still? If so, I will be out there this up coming Tuesday.

Yes, we are still gathering at Overton Park on Tuesdays. We will be there next week (8-5-08) but the following 2 Tuesdays there may not be anyone due to other obligations. We’ll look for you at the park.

Keep working on that monkey’s fist.

Hey, I know this is the wrong thread, but does anybody know how to tie a rope into on of the step ladder type configurations, you know where you set you foot in one side and push down the the other side goes up and repeat. I’ve always wanted to know how to make one of those.

Weak.
