Monkey's Fist

I know what you are talking about, but I can’t find anything on how to make one. It might be a simple teeter-totter type knot, but I don’t know how it would climb. That’s probably the tricky part. This isn’t it, but it may work. Prusik Knot

Thanks! I’ve always wanted to make of those thing’s and climb up a tree. I’m not sure why, but even since I was a small boy I have wanted to do that and use a grapple-hook. I used to make both for my gi joes.

I have and old rope that should be long enough, I’ll have to try that this weekend.

So you’re going to trust your life and well-being to “an old rope”? What’s to say this rope won’t snap when you’re 10 feet off the ground?

If you’re going to climb a rope, you need to make sure you know what you’re doing, and that you’re using equipment that’s made for climbing, and your equipment in good shape.

That being said, prusik knots are often used to ascend ropes. I’m a bit more fond of the Kleimheist as it doesn’t bind as tightly as a prusik, and it’s much more adjustable. Be sure to experiment with this knot before you get off the ground, as you may need to use more (or fewer) wraps to achieve sufficient “grab” on your rope.

Also be sure to have a backup system in place if possible. Have someone belay you from a 2nd rope, or tie yourself into the tail end of the rope you’re climbing, at regular intervals, such that if your prusik fails you don’t fall all the way to the ground.

Be careful, lad!
