We’re thinking of merging Videos into General.
Nowadays, videos are as regular content as text pictures. They are not “special” as they were 10+ years ago, but they currently are posted in a dedicated category of marginal value.
As soon as someone started the “Videos That Inspire You” thread, I think the Videos category may have become obsolete.
That being said, if the Videos category was separated by topic, then I could see users navigating to the Video section with the sole intention of being taught, being inspired, being entertained, etc.
Example topics:
Free-Mounting, Trials, Muni, Freewheel, Flatland, Freestyle, Wheelwalk et al, Rolling Wrap et al, Unicycle Repair, Unicycle Customization, Tubeless Setup, Tutorials.
Organized by topics, the Video category/selection might act as more of a library/repository/archive, without the discussion. However, that might require redundant posting of video-only content in the Video category.
Regardless of the decision, I expect that, like when a grocery store does a reset and “messes the location of everything up”, users will be happy with the changes once they learn where to find videos and/or how to search for them.
The most obvious way to keep track of videos would be tags, but I think most people won’t add them.
Perhaps I can automate the tag application by looking for text like youtube, youtu.be, vimeo, .mp4, etc… on a topic creation.
Perhaps regular members (trust level 3) can add this tag themselves if they see someone creating a video topic without the tag. This is a great thing with this forum software, the community can self-moderate to an extent
Perhaps there is not enough new topics containing videos for this to be a real moderation issue.
If people want to look for certain types of videos, for learning, the best would be a wiki that references such topics or video. What do you think?
The ability to add a tag to a video, or a post that contains a video, would allow a user to search for videos that address the same topic. If that ability is added, I think an agreed-upon standard for tagging should be used.
Tagging is a good option, especially if Level 3 users are happy to step up to help, because let’s be real, the majority of members here will forget to add one, or won’t even know you can add tags.
I remember when the Videos category was first added to the forum. When I first started riding, Youtube wasn’t around and getting a video online was a laborious process. You would spend a year filming, finding the perfect music track, getting the right ‘ender’, capturing the tapes to digital and editing it all together. Then getting it out to people to watch on the forum was another process entirely. There weren’t many videos around at that time, so each new one was a bit of an event and you’d go back and watch them several (or hundreds) of times.
These days videos are almost a complete non-event and hardly anyone puts the time in to make really nicely polished videos anymore. Of course there are some exceptions.
I look fondly back on those times because it’s what sparked my love of the moving image and a career as a camera operator.
How to find videos topics if they are merged into General : the easiest way would be by using a #video tag.
How to find videos by subject (Free-Mounting, Trials, Muni, Freewheel, Flatland, Freestyle, Wheelwalk et al, Rolling Wrap et al, Unicycle Repair, Unicycle Customization, Tubeless Setup, Tutorials.). This is doable, but introduces a wide array of tags to be used.
If those tags are meant to be restricted to videos, then videos should be kept in a separate category
Also, are there enough videos about those topics for tags to be more useful than using keywords in the search?
So, what do we do? My take would be merging the two categories but tag videos with a #video tag.
Newly created topic will be automatically assigned this tag if they contain the words youtube, vimeo, .mp4, etc. Tags will be added or removed if it’s needed, by staff or trust level 3 users.
Note that change can be reverted at any time.
Perhaps this would lead to a more widespread use of tags in the future, why not. If it doesn’t demand too much moderation, they are a good way to keep information tidy and filterable.
