Looking to upgrade to a better unicycle

That‘s a promising start! I think he‘s a natural, since he already knows about the most unicyclingy thing there is: an uncomfortable seat. I think it is your duty to guide him to acceptance (or to let him try a different seat, if you have one) so he can become a strong member of your growing unicycling community.

I would love to drag some of my friends into trying unicycling but that just won’t happen. The friend I got to try it would have been the only person I know to consider trying it but sadly they are graduating this year. This won’t stop me from trying to convince others to try it though.

I’m so excited! Its supposed to arrive tomorrow morning. Im hoping I can find time to assemble it but I might have to wait a day or two.

It arrived and I have put it together. I cut the post a little bit but it is still too tall by quite a lot. The red line in the picture is where I cut it. I also tried getting on with the cranks in the middle setting, not even the longest setting. The part that confuses me is how it shows a minimum line, but appears to have much more room beneath the seat clamps. Can i go past the minimum line?

I misunderstood the line so im going to be cutting it again. I thought that was the minimum line not the minimum insert length. Whoops

Yep, you could measure from the bottom to the line (usually around 10cm) and try to make sure that you have this amount inserted. That said, while the seat tube of my Oregon’s frame is longer than 10cm, the bottom part is widened, thus the “effective length” is only about 7cm. And that works fine. On my first uni I had the seat post only inserted about 4cm for many years (before replacing it). Even though that was barely more than the length of the keyhole slit, that worked fine. Was a steel frame, and a steel post, though. I think the minimum insert is more important on b!cycles where the seat tube / seat post usually doesn’t point straight up.
By the way, congrats on your new unicycle. If it rides as good as it looks, you’re in for a lot of fun!

“New unicycle day” is always an exciting one… :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I ended up cutting it to the 150 mark to keep room if i want to try out the other crank lengths. It works very well. I’m going for a ride in a little while so I’ll make sure to post what I think. One thing I’ve noticed from testing out the seat height, free mounting feels impossible on the bigger wheel😂. Looks like I’ll have to relearn free mounting. Its crazy how big a difference there is from a 20" to a 26" wheel.

Hehe, but you will learn it eventually! Just needs a bigger effort when pushing away from the ground to mount the uni.

Here is my review of the 26" Nimbus Oracle after one day. I absolutely love it! At the same time, it is not what I expected. When looking at the different wheel sizes, I was thinking that the difference from 20" to 26" would be minimal. That is why I wanted a 29". I was shocked to see how much bigger the 26" wheel was compared to the 20". When it came to assembly, It was very easy. It came with the frame and brake already installed so I didn’t have to do anything there. The only annoying part was figuring out where to cut the seat post but it was only annoying because I completely misunderstood the minimum insert mark as the limit I could cut. After that, I cut plenty off so I can comfortably ride (I cut at the 150 mark). Once assembled, I began to make my way over to my car on the Oracle but it took me about 10 minutes of struggling to mount and couldn’t stay on for more than a few pedals. I drove to a trail I hadn’t been to yet that was a little longer than the other I had been to. I don’t know if something just clicked but I was able to stay on for long distances (for me it was long). I think my furthest distance in one go was a little over 0.8 miles. The free mounting was a struggle until I was about halfway done. I began to almost jump over in order to free mount. It also surprised me how smooth it was on concrete. From how I interpreted it, I thought people said there was more friction with the fat wheel but it was a very smooth ride for me. I plan to start trying Muni soon once I learn some more helpful basic skills. For example, the back half of my ride I focused on keeping one hand on the saddle which I found to be very unsteady. One thing I thought was interesting is I preferred my dominant hand to be my flailing hand. I figured it would be the other way around. I had the Nimbus air saddle cover on my saddle and I do believe it was more comfortable than my 20". I did notice the front of the cover has a small hole already because of some of the early UPDs. Toward the end, it was still uncomfortable but I was able to make it further before it began to actually hurt. I think I just have to get used to it. My stats showed that I went 7.77 miles in 1 hour and 32 minutes. Last week I went 4.42 miles in 1 hour and 28 minutes on my cheap 20". I am so happy with these results. Another fun part of the ride was all of the people. It was kind of funny to see how many people smile when they see a unicycle. I would consider myself an introvert so its kind of nice that other people are starting conversations or giving fun comments about the unicycle.

That’s the normal procedure when you start to learn it . You will get used to it eventually and soon realise that it really helps a lot in difficult terrain.

Same here. Some people train to be able to ride ambidextrously. If the terrain is not too challenging it kinda works for me, but braking with my dominant hand is a bit like playing russian roulette.

:100:
Some may laugh at you, but most smile with you.

Set a goal for your future self to strive for braking comfortably with either hand. Helps on long descents being able to switch if your hand fatigues. Makes you a better rider overall. Glad you’re enjoying your new uni.

Congrats!! I am so happy you enjoy your new uni so much already.

This. Also, practice the brakes at every downhill and when dismounting now in the beginning. Get a proper feel for them sooner rather than later.

Also, on flat roads you could practice a two hand grip on the saddle. Just try it out every now and then. It will allow you to balance with your body rather than with your falling arm. I am a flailer myself btw. My right arm is a wonderful counterweight to keep me stable in challenging conditions!

You now have a unicycle in the more natural range of riding. A 20" is actually a bit of a challenge when it comes to distance riding. It is quite awkward. From 24" and up it just feels smoother and more natural.

I made a very short video to show off the new unicycle. I can’t do any tricks so its just a little demonstration.

I tried to go for a short ride yesterday but it hurt so bad. Everything was sore😂. I only made it 0.7 miles and it started raining so i ended it early.

Yeah, new uni seats always hurt for the first few weeks of riding. I got a new uni about a month ago, and the seat really was killing me. But then it stopped hurting as much. Hope you break it in soon!

Are you referring to muscles in general or to your bum? Muscles should adapt quicker to riding a different machine than the bottom and seat adapt to each others.

@RYLUNDO , if you are riding more now that you have in the past, you might be somewhat sore for a while until your body adjusts.

If this is your first time to ride a Stadium Saddle, welcome to the (not permanently) Sore Crotch Club. At least until your body adjusts and/or you break the foam of the saddle in. I’m not sure which of those two actually happens (I think it’s both), but if you keep riding that saddle, you will find that one day you aren’t sore any more. Then later, if you try your pre-stadium saddle, you may find that you prefer the Stadium saddle.

Yeah, for years I was riding a Hoppley saddle and then got a new uni with Nimbus freestyle saddle. Very painful at first, but now I’ve broken it in and gotten used to it. Also, is there a big difference between the stadium and the freestyle?
