Icons for unicycling disciplines

This question may prove that the icons are still not yet as clear as they should be. One icon is for Street, while the other one is for Trials.

For me it was clear that the stairs were for street and the other for trials. But a year ago I didn’t know about the distinction between those and say Flatland.

The Icons themselves are clear, but the general knowledge might not be. @Setonix can correct me if I am wrong

I don’t think that is a lack in the pictograms, but a lack in me. I would call street a form a trials as well. It is not what I practice with unicycling.

Not really happy with it (not even sure if it’s safe for work!), but you get the idea:

On the other hand, I’m quite happy with this:

Just need to mount a proper tyre (this is an old picture, when I still had the Jumbo Jim. That tyre was a pain!) to take a new picture of my Oregon in its current configuration (yes, with shorter cranks, too :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:, and a bigger disc). I’m thinking of the Al Mighty. Problem is, I can only use one hand at the moment, so changing the tyre should be loads of fun . Maybe I should leave the Nate, even if it’s not as fat as I’d like for the picture.
Anyway, I’mk pretty sure I will make a T-shirt with the latter (black or red stars?) and maybe even stickers. You know, to let people know they should consider unicycling…

I think the tire on your “tired of training wheels” image looks great!

I also like the green tshirt image. That one may prompt discussion with non-unicyclists wishing to know more about it.

So uhm can I just use your picture to have it printed at the local T-Shirt store? All I need to do is send them the pic and a week later I reckon I can pick it up.

Not these. Will try and take a picture with a proper tyre today or tomorrow. Once done, I‘ll upload the graphics in good resolution to be used.

cool, looking forward to it.

I think 3c looks more like a UPD
3a is a graceful dismount while 3b is a less graceful dismount

I always thought of UPD as a way to understate a crash. I searched the archives, and apparently there are about as many opinions on this matter as there are ways to dismount a unicycle.

Same, I thought UPD was slang for falling

UPD happens when you lose balance. I dont think bailing, coz of chickening out or to avoid an accident is not really a UPD, coz it happens deliberately. A UPD can end you up up side down but not necessarily. With a bit of luck and/or experience you can land on ur feet.

I dont want those steps on a TShirt though

Fairly new rider here, have visited the forum occasionally for tips after discovering it. Happened to see this post & thought I’d try to help. Currently, I’m pretty certain I’m a better icon designer than rider!

Not a professional graphic designer but have made a number of icons over the years & always admire good design like the Olympics pictograms.

Following is a sample of some icons I created based on the list of disciplines.

These are: Freestyle Pairs, Freestyle Group; Urban Flatland; Freestyle Individual; Muni (Cross-Country or just General); and Urban Flatland (again)

The originals are all in b&w but I included these variations to show they can be colored & used within shapes like a rectangle. Colors were borrowed from the current Unicon 22 site.

Note: while the Olympics pictograms are inspiring, I designed these independently of any of the collections. After I had drawn & designed a couple to establish a basic style, I noticed they most closely resembled the Sochi 2014 set. Mine have different line thicknesses & proportions in general. Just wanted to throw that in as Olympics pictograms are copyrighted & all that stuff.

So if this sample seems helpful for what you had in mind @Eric_aus_Chemnitz I can work on finalizing the whole collection & upload to a place where people can download an .svg (scaleable) version.

I reckon your dismounting standards aren’t very high :squinting_face_with_tongue:. Agree, there are many ways to dismount a uni, and there are many different views on what a UPD is. As depictured, if I end up on my feet I call it a UPD, if it gets worse I call it a fall.

Years ago, I used to track the number of UPDs, because I couldn’t complete any Strava routes or segments without at least one UPD. Since I was trying to complete a route or segment without stopping, I considered any dismount that was not planned (ie. The finish line) as a UPD. Back then, I asked the forum whether I should list the act of stopping to pick up my dog’s poop as a UPD. It certainly wasn’t a planned part of the ride, since it could happen anywhere. Ultimately, I decided that it doesn’t count to pick up dog poop, as I knew in advance that it would happen. I just didn’t know where.

However, if I am happily pedaling along and suddenly the unicycle is stopped by a speck of dust and I immediately look like Wile E. Coyote hanging in midair, I call that a UPD, whether I run it out, or not.

Most of my UPDs look like 3b on the TShirt design. Bad UPDs look like 3c. I will normally give 3c an additional term. Either a “fall”, or a “wreck”, depending on how bad it is, and depending on who the audience is.

I don’t normally mention UPDs to my non-unicycling friends (or my unicyclist friends, for that matter). Regular UPDs normally aren’t “newsworthy”, nor do I normally have to explain bruises or scrapes. However, the after effects of a 3c UPD might require an explanation. Those UPDs qualify as “wrecks” or “falls”, depending on how hard I hit the ground, how far I slid, or how many times I may have bounced.

I think 3b and 3c are both UPD

Why do the freestylers ride on ultimate wheels? :stuck_out_tongue: Very free indeed.

I like your UPD user icon. Definitely a 3B

They may both be a UPD, but both are not a fall. So why not be precise and make the difference so it‘s clear to everybody what is meant?

In that case I think you should make a “3d: crash” as well, and make 3c slightly less dramatic.

Or even better: Take the bottom sketch and name it “3d: Ungraceful Dismount”:+1:

Drawing UPD-ing stick figures was oddly satisfying

Edit: PLEASE make the bottom sketch the official icon for UPD! :star_struck:

when I see that picture, I only think “Poor unicycle!“….

Good point on the wheel size! I was going for a consistent wheel size throughout but that one might be a bit large.
