Full face helmets

Do you guys have any recommendations for full face helmets? I installed a Schlumpf hub on my 36er, and the first ride gave me a strong compulsion to better protect my face

I have one from Bell where you can remove the chin guard. I think itā€˜s the Super Air R Spherical. Fits my head, is rather light and quite comfortable. Possibly not quite as safe as one with a fix chin guard, though.
I think as always with helmets, itā€˜s best to go to a shop and try various models (if they have more than just one model) to find the best one for you.

I use a LEATT Enduro 3.0 on my G36 with a Fox TITAN SPORT protective jacket. Tested and approved for falls over 25 km/h. If you really want a full body protection you can add good kneepads and a short with hip protection.
With all this protective gear you won’t fear from falling and you won’t hurt yourself (significantly less)

Thanks for the recommendation! I just found out none of the bike shops in Boston carry full face helmets, so I appreciate it all the more. Perks of living in a city

I wear the Bell Super DH, and love it.

I also use Bell Super Air R Spherical. I like its full face for Muni downhill. I usually remove the chin guard for road riding, but it still looks a bit bulky.

Same here, kinda. When schlumpfing or riding the 36er and pushing it, I think the chin guard is a good idea. That was an important factor in my decision to buy a full face helmet. Imagine a face plant at 20+ km/h… :scream:

I don’t know for 20+ face plants, but they are really painful at low speeds (got involved in one, and exploded my brow). At higher speeds, my face has never touched the ground on high speed falls, but I can say for sure that 30+ falls do hurt, quite a lot.

Bell, cannot remember the model, see piccy. Nice and light, well made, plenty of air holes, although it does get hot in the summer. Visor, useful on a sunny day. Bought off amazon or ebay. Nice snug fit and comfy to wear.

@Maximus A friend of mine just had a fall on his geared shlumpf une, the mechanism disengauged somehow at over 20mph, broke his collar bone. Now off riding for 6-8 weeks while it all heals.

A full face helmet is a good idea. Generally I get negetive conments from the uni community for wearing one, but I like riding in the woods, in a local quarry and country parks. Plenty of branches, roots, rocks, boulders etc for that UPD.

My first time really riding muni, I was riding in a former mining area that was converted to mountain bike trails. There was no shortage of rocks and stones everywhere, not to mention the usual trees and roots. I don’t have a full face helmet yet, but the benefits of having one became clear to me when I was riding on the trails and thought ā€œMan… Really hope I don’t trip and chip a tooth on a rockā€

Same here.

Dress for the crash, not for the ride.

Just flip the video around for a forward face plant. Helmets are a good idea. Period. Stay safe out there.

I ended up getting the Specialized Gambit. It’s comfy, super lightweight, and I found it on sale for $200. I like it a lot

Not all the time but sometimes I also wear my Full Face Helmet from Troy Lee Design, it’s very good and you’re safe with it.

I’ve taken some flatland spills that were not fun, I wear a skate helmet. On my 20", my goal is slow, not fast … well, not very fast anyhow.

I’m interested in muni, but can’t ride on bumpy trails well at all yet. I take from this thread that muni = full face, no matter what?

I recall riding uni at my local MTB park for the first time[1] and thinking ā€œyeah, I would feel safer with a full face helmetā€. It’s a former mining area in the woods, so there’s plenty of elevation change, roots, and rocks. I didn’t like the thought of me falling over and chipping a tooth or two :face_with_crossed_out_eyes:

I haven’t yet got a full face helmet, but I might get one this summer. Depends on if I find myself doing more off-road stuff

  1. *In the dry, I did ride there once before in the winter but I didn’t really do much ā†©ļøŽ

That’s up to you.
I can imagine circumstances where a normal helmet would be more than adequate, i.e. mild muni on a flowy trail with soft soil. But since there always tend to be roots and rocks where I do muni, and since the chances of falling at all are way higher when doing muni I wear a whole lot of protection gear, including a full face helmet.
So far my helmet only once (very gently) touched the ground when I fell, and that was on the rear of my head, not the face. Still, better be protected and not use it than the other way round…
