Freewheel Unicycling Megathread

Thanks a lot. I bought the parts and I thought about to change the Rim, because it is a Steel rim and not in the best conditions.

I searched for a spring for a long time, bought standard springs, but none of them were suitable for the nimbus drift trike hub. One year ago, I ended up buying two kits from UDC, but I think they were the last ones left.

How do i get the axle and the bearings back into their correct position?

i thought the bearing was loose on those hubs?

@toutestbon did a tutorial on our French forum to show how to do it:

Ouch….thats not very freewheeling now. How did you manage to do that ?

@Maxence you had a similar problem with your hub; or was it different ?

The exact same issue on both of my hubs

Regular muni riding, ocasional drops little jumps (like here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbQ356eqL4w). I have it since july 2024, used from time to time since i ride fixed mostly and last year i had 5mo brake due to twisted ankle. I’ll contact local qx dealer if he can help to fix it.
In general i’m bit dissapointed since i belive i didn’t land anythig crazy.
It looks like PPF can’t handle jumping at all. Sad part is there is no relaiable freewheel hub on the market.

Do you think the cause of the breakage is related to landing jumps rather than too much torque during the climb?

@Maxence were you able to get your hub repaired again?

I have three Pipifax hubs and I’m lucky enough not to have had any problems. I use them every day, but mainly for smooth coasting.

Since i barely climb using freewheel i’m conviced that jumping is a weak point of this hub.

Not yet. I have had other things to do. But I’ll fix it, sure enough!

I added some notes about this in the first post as soon as we had more information on what it was inside the hub.

I’ve read the information Stieber provide for this bearing and assuming that’s what’s failing I’m not at all surprised. It’s very much not its intended purpose.

Onyx Racing use sprag clutches that are not also bearings, and they’re pretty sizeable things. They also sell spares as people still break/wear those: Sprag Clutch - Onyx Hubs Europe

Onyx have some great videos showing how their hubs go together. Some of them have two sprag clutches, but all of them seem to have three bearings to ensure correct clutch spacing if the axle or hub shell flex.

No wonder they’re as expensive as they are.

Just watched your video, your riding is amazing and to the point I would love to get to on freewheel. My general riding is controlled but my brake coasting if that’s how you call it needs work on.

Is freewheel something you would learn on a smaller wheel first and then move to a bigger wheel. Mine is a 20". Also is the coasting on a bigger wheel easier than on a smaller wheel, or does that not matter?

I believe learning on a smaller wheel is easier, because mounting on a freewheel uni is a challenge that’s harder on a bigger wheel. A 20er lets you “walk” onto the pedal, whereas a 36er requires you to jump onto it.

Regarding coasting, I find it easier to do on a bigger wheel. It has more inertia and it rolls better over imperfections in the road.
